This story was inspired by Alexander wollcotts personality and he actually played himself/whiteside in the play...Banjo was basically Harpo..he was part of the Algonquin round table group...i never new this until i read Harpo marx autobiography..
Jimmy Durante was an old vaudevillian, God bless him, who seemed to feel that the whole reason anyone was alive was to laugh, relax, and feel good, and his job was to make that happen. He comported himself accordingly.
George Kaufman (who co-wrote several of the Marx Brothers' Broadway shows, and was a close friend of Groucho's) and Moss Hart wrote the play that became this movie...and "Banjo" was definitely a thinly disguised version of the real Harpo [in fact, I believe Harpo himself played the role in at least one stage version of the original play].
@methogonzo Read "Harpo Speaks", his autobiography. The play was written by friends of his and 'Banjo' is in fact Harpo. Not as we see him in films, but as he was.
I never "got" Durante... but THIS FILM alone justifies his whole career.

I always thought Banjo was written as a tribute to Groucho. Oh, well! I could be wrong.
Thanks for the posting! Groucho or Harpo, this is my favorite scene in the entire movie.

Im lost in words... Possibly funniest scene in the history of movies, (and that scene includes his entire life, he is the god of comedy).

This film and this song have been in my mind from the first (and only) time I saw it, years and years ago. Fantastic to see this again.
'Have you ever had the feeling that you wanted to stay....' That's showbiz. What's the title of the film?
