seriously i love this song..i can't get over the lyrics and how much it hits close to home. Matthew Good is a musical GOD and i can't wait for his show in Novemeber the 11th at the Shaw in Edmonton!! :D
remember when chad kroeger of nickleback insulted matt good?? i do. matt good has more talent in his toenail than nickelback will ever have. matt good is better than tragically hip. he is definitely the best music writer in canada. he shows so much emotion in his music. best canadian artist ever for sure
Absolutely. He is a true "artist." I've never known a musician who could connect to something inside of me at the level he does with his music. It's his honesty and personal emotion he puts in it, which goes far beyond NB and the Hip.
This is absolutely one of Matt's best songs to date. The soaring vocals, the raw emotional buildup at the end... everything is perfect. A wonderful piece.
This is a good album. Id reccomend Hospital Music to anyone who hasnt heard that album yet. It took me a bit to get into that, but theres a few songs I cant get enough of. Im A Window, Black Helicopter and Born Losers
I'm definitely going to have buy Avalanche when I get a chance. This is the second song I know of from that album that I really like. The other is "Weapon."
This song is honestly one of the most beautiful songs ever made. Reminds me of living in Poco driving home "The Morning after the Party" thanks for posting!!!!
this is one of my most favorite Matt Good songs... so moving.. so emotional.. just fucking beautiful....amazing.. i lOVE Avalanche.. the whole album is amazing.. I've met matt like three times and he was laid-back yet courteous each time.. I love him...
It's a really deep and moody song. Very honest and personal for Matt Good to have written it the way that he did, too. He even compares himself to a monkey who dances on command. I can't imagine a video that would have fit this song better.
I'd accidentally discovered something about this song. Despite the title of the song, whatever you do... do not sing this in an Elmer Fudd voice. Completely changes the context of the song at the chorus.
I really like this song, however, this video is a little disturbing. It's too bad they cut off the very end of the song, it is really beautiful. Does anyone have any idea what this song is about? War? Peace? Hate? Love? huh?
I believe it is about his experience in the MGB and his transition to a Solo Artist. Essentially it is about his frustration with playing off his public persona that had developed in the MGB.
In an interview he said, "'"When Audio of Being came out, I was at the end of my rope with it all. I felt like I was playing a role that everyone else wanted me to play but me. I just couldn't do it any more. I was stuck in a rut. It had to change."
What a powerful song. Matt's in a class by himself - especially when he sings with a lot of emotion. I can't believe I've still never seen him live. I'm an idiot.

Have you ever met the man (in response to 99435fghf)? He's brilliant and very courteous with his fans. He's just a regular guy who happens to be a rockstar. Don't go passing judgment on people you don't understand. I personally have met him, in fact spent an evening with him at his pool party in vegas this summer, and it was like hanging out with an old friend.
Your an ass, and I've never met you so that makes us even, you ignorant fool. Passing judgement on heresay is pure ignorance, so go shake his hand, and buy him coffee, talk with him, and you'll see your friends are missing something....
The Matthew Good Band was the band he got famous with, then they broke up and were re-constituted (several times, with different members)before he finally went out on his own as a solo artist, hence Matthew Good.
Just remember he was dealing with a mental illness most of the time and didn't know it! I hope that he will be back with a band and come down to the states and kick all your ass's In my books he is redeemed!
I hope he doesn't do the 'band' thing again, and I doubt he will. What he is doing now is genius, hospital music has been one of the most intense listening experiences for me, avalanche is a masterpiece, and even white light rock and roll review is amazing, in my opinion he has only been getting better since MGB disbanded.
And if you are a fan of all the MGB stuff, he still plays a whole wack of those songs live. So it is really all win win, great new stuff, and a healthy dose of old stuff.
hes touring again with a band in the spring, i seen his solo show, amazing yes , but to really take in his music, a band behind him makes it even better.
sorry, allow me to clarify, i hope he doesn't begin 'writing' songs again as part of a band. Though he did have some help from other musicians to record hospital music and his other solo albums, he is the one that did the majority of the writing.
As a lot of his solo stuff does have layered instruments and his not exactly solo in the sense that it is just him there acoustically, it is solo in the sense that he wrote most of the music.
touring with the band is cool though, i plan to see them
I love him! First saw him in Vancouver in 1996 for New Years Eve, and have loved him eversince! But I live in the states now, and he just doesn't tour here. Shame.
It is frigging brilliant. Right up there with Avalanche and The Audio of Being in terms of quality. The first track alone is one of his finest pieces ever.
i have only heard the first single.. born losers. but i am going to see a SOLO ACOUSTIC performance on the 30th of october. ill be sure to tell you how it is.. hahah. im stoked. the venue is small and intimate, and has great acoustics, so the sound will be crisp and clear :D
i got Hospital Music a few months back and like it very much. I prefer avalanche, but i say get it to know for sure. Besides its Matt Good, you can't go wrong.
First heard of MG when I was in Vancouver in 2003, heard one of his songs on Much (oh, the irony) and bought Avalanche... loved it, and this is the best song. And great video!
gg5656, "When Audio of Being came out, I was at the end of my rope with it all. I felt like I was playing a role that everyone else wanted me to play but me. I just couldn't do it any more. I was stuck in a rut. It had to change." - Matthew Good
This song is written about his feelings of despair during the Matthew Good Band days. He felt everyone around him was using him to make money, and cared nothing about his mental deterioration.
Part2 Buy in. It should shut you up Try it. It should shut you up They've brought someone in to shut you up And it's getting to be light work While we were hunting rabbits I came upon a clear And the sky, it's stars like fortune drilled me Until now I was a soldier Until now I dealt in fear These years of cloak and dagger Have left us disappeared And I dance and I sing And I'm a monkey in a long line of kings And we dance and we sing
Buy in. It'll shut you up Try it. It should shut you up We've brought someone in to shut you up It's a life's work While we were hunting rabbits I came upon a clear The sky, it's stars like fortune drilled me Until now I was a soldier Until now I dealt in fear These years of cloak and dagger Have left us disappeared (choir sings with matt in this part) And I dance and I sing And I'm a monkey in a long line
This is a very fitting video to this song. It's beautiful and haunting. Matt just keeps getting better with time. I love his music just as much now a decade later as when I was 16.
yo i absolutely love this song its very chilling..i have an idea about what this fantastic song is about, but i was just wondering if someone could shed some light on the meaning...
I've never heard of him playing in the US before. Has he gotten any media here? He totally deserves it. I hate that I've never listened to him before, because he sounds like someone I would have enjoyed listening to over the years.

So it is really all win win, great new stuff, and a healthy dose of old stuff.

hes touring again with a band in the spring, i seen his solo show, amazing yes , but to really take in his music, a band behind him makes it even better.
frontbumer 3 years ago
sorry, allow me to clarify, i hope he doesn't begin 'writing' songs again as part of a band.

Leaffan07:
It is frigging brilliant. Right up there with Avalanche and The Audio of Being in terms of quality. The first track alone is one of his finest pieces ever.

Has anyone who has bought or listened to his latest album comment on how it is? I'm anxious to get it and hear.

i have only heard the first single.. born losers. but i am going to see a SOLO ACOUSTIC performance on the 30th of october. ill be sure to tell you how it is.. hahah. im stoked. the venue is small and intimate, and has great acoustics, so the sound will be crisp and clear :D

This is a very fitting video to this song. It's beautiful and haunting. Matt just keeps getting better with time. I love his music just as much now a decade later as when I was 16.
