I may be 4 years late, but, I have the answers. June 2011.Pete Condoli, trumpet. Ted Nash, alto. Lloyd Ulyate, trombone.Shelley Manne, drums.Armand Kaproff, cello. Dave Frisina, violin. Martin Ruderman, flute. Gordon Schoneberg, oboe. Mitchell Lurie, clarinet.Jack Marsh, bassoon. John Crown, piano. Lee Perrin, timpani. Johnny Williams, piano.
These guys did all the playing at different points in the movie, some, of course, in this segment. I am the man.
The guitarist on the sound track was Jim Hall who had left the Quintet by the time of the recording.However John Pisano his replacement appeared as an extra I think in this scene.1.18 (?)
As a New Yorker, I can't tell you how much I adore this movie. Few movies have ever captured the allure, the greed, the raw ambition, the talent that fuels New York. And as a jazz lover, few movies have ever done a better job of weaving the jazz scene into the plot of the movie. (One of the protagonists is the jazz guitarist shown in this clip.) This is classic movie making at its very best - a true tour de force and the best movie that Curtis and Lancaster ever made.
The greatest single thing about this: the guy in the role of the guitarist (Martin Milner, known to Twilight Zone fans as "Paul Grinstead" from "Mirror Image") is "playing" a DeAngelico. Its incredible to actually see footage of one of these guitars being "played" not too long after it would have been built (e.g., late '50s). What little video there is of actual jazz guitarists from the 1950s usually features them playing Gibsons, not these custom made beauties.
Damn good movie. That Barbara Nichols was just all electric lucious in this scene. The Adam-12 cop on the belly fiddle was lucky to be playing across that sweet looking Susan Harison as her boyfriend.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant...raw and dark. Characters make Broadway theater people in "All about Eve" and Hollywood film types in "Sunset Boulevard" look like clergy! James Wong Howe cinematography nothing short of incredible!
i was just trying to think of who this was in this movie and lo and behold, i look up chico hamilton because i'm going to see him and this comes up, great

@Beck19781
His manager is called D'Angelo in the film too.
Not much of an in-joke, so it must be a coincidence!

@nuitetjuors1 it'd have to be. I wouldn't expect Mackendrick to be that hip.
Beck19781 1 year ago
@Beck19781 fair point! and obviously the maker's name had to be hidden anyway to give martin milner an easier time finger-syncing.
