The glass jar is a feeder. Eventually it was taken away. It was just there to feed them to get started quicker.
For the smoke, you use a bee smoker. You can burn old dry leaves, old dry cornhusks, or other organic matter such as burlap sack. It triggers a bee's instinct to gorge on their own honey, so that they are occupied and they don't attack you.
Bees are wonderfully fascinating. Wish that I was brave enough to keep some! Thanks for this.

how did you make that smoke? does the smoke confuse the bee's. Is that a tactic to keep them from attacking you?
