my chihuahua gave birth 4 hours ago and we didn't touch at all.She was able to cut her own cord and push the babies out. There is no need for that much interference unless she is having difficulties. Also, if there are difficulties you should go to the vet not your mom,sister,brother, etc.

Help is needed if she cuts the cord too short (dental floss-tie it up) she doesn't get it out of the sack or she is just too tired to push anymore. FYI - the dog doesn't need that much help. The only help the mother should need is to get the membrane off of the puppies head. With the mother's leg up like that wasn't helping her, that's why it took her so long to give birth to her first pup. Let the mother do her thing, this is the bonding moment between the mother and her pup.

@m1ssblu3st0rm very true, I've helped whelp pups before, all you need to do is stay near but not too close, the only thing you need to keep an eye out for is a pup in a membrane sack that the mother is ignoring. We had to open 1 sack because the mother was too busy concentrating on the first pup. In the end, the pup we got out the sack ended up being our dog lol. Bitches tend to know what they're doing and get more nervous and nasty when people are close by.

A mother dogs teeth are made so that when she chews the cord it severs it and blood flow stops. When u cut it with scissors like that it can cause a lot of blood loss, as u can see in this video the blood squirts out when you cut it. If u think u have to cut it u should at least tie it first.
