The trick of these things lie in the fact that they can pack em full with fuel and use outside oxygen for ignition. In conventional explosives they pack the fuel with the 'oxygen' like salpeter in blackpowder So the yield of this weapon is actually variable, in low oxygen conditions it sucks. probably strong winds would deminish its power too cause the fuel vapors wouldnt disperse well

The MOAB (multiple ordinance air burst) is the 2000 pounder thats a combination of diesel surrounded by C4 then detonated above the surface of the target. It is supposed to level a radius of 1/4 mile. Inexpensive answer to a small nuclear device.

Not at all. It's for surface targets, whereas a bunker buster is designed to penetrate down to a bunker. You can't destroy a bunker with a large surface explosion like that, that's the purpose for bunkers, and for bunker busters.

Essentially with such thermobaric weapons it is not just the explosion itself, but also the shockwave and high temperatures generated that do the damage. Basically anyone within 300m of the blast centre will be vapourised or killed by the effects of the concussion/increased atmospheric pressure (overpressure).
Its a fuel-air explosive, which is second only to a nuke. They cause massive overpressures compared to standard gravity bombs - look what it did to those buildings.

Outside this range, I suspect people will still suffer nosebleeds, ruptured eardrums, eyeball damage, skin burns, etc. This happens with more conventional gravity bombs too, but it is the increased blast/kill radius and the damage:bomb weight ratio that makes this a particularly nasty piece of hardware.

The MOAB (multiple ordinance air burst) is the 2000 pounder thats a combination of diesel surrounded by C4 then detonated above the surface of the target. It is supposed to level a radius of 1/4 mile. Inexpensive answer to a small nuclear device.

i disagree we should not attack the robots for they fear nothing and have little or no respect for their own well being. plus the robots can conput things very fast and would most likely be a very clever foe. also they preform many productive duties for humans and if we could some how establish a friendship with the robots we may improve life overall for both humans and robots but not mexicans...... or canadians, americans shoes and hat.

And in other news, the ruskies have discovered that their guidance system and general quality is considerably inferior to the American's. In fact, during testing, it was discovered that the bomb was only 5% accurate, which was considered a success because it was designed to be only 4% accurate. Unfortunately, when it did manage to find the target, it failed to explode. Oh well, what else can be expected from a failed nation?

Not at all. It's for surface targets, whereas a bunker buster is designed to penetrate down to a bunker. You can't destroy a bunker with a large surface explosion like that, that's the purpose for bunkers, and for bunker busters.

This video is a pretty lame attempt by the Russians to show that weapons drop. The bomb was, obviously, dropped out of the rear ramp of a cargo plane (similar to how the U.S. drops the Daisy Cutter), not out of the bomb bay of the bomber in the video.

snipedsniper18, I think we can both agree on what a Tu-160 and a C-130 looks like, but the footage on the FOAB, it was Russian, as for after half way of the video it shows the US MOAB dropped from a C-130, so yes that was an American footage, the US footage starts from around 1.25, they are explaining about the MOAB, comparing it, I think you got confused.

Essentially with such thermobaric weapons it is not just the explosion itself, but also the shockwave and high temperatures generated that do the damage. Basically anyone within 300m of the blast centre will be vapourised or killed by the effects of the concussion/increased atmospheric pressure (overpressure).

Its a fuel-air explosive, which is second only to a nuke. They cause massive overpressures compared to standard gravity bombs - look what it did to those buildings.

Outside this range, I suspect people will still suffer nosebleeds, ruptured eardrums, eyeball damage, skin burns, etc. This happens with more conventional gravity bombs too, but it is the increased blast/kill radius and the damage:bomb weight ratio that makes this a particularly nasty piece of hardware.
