He won the goal title but shared it with sydney crosby. a little information, sidney crosby didnt score 50 goals untill his fifth year in the nhl, stammer did it in his 2nd.
@gunner525 Sorry Gunner but the only one who came close to being "The Next One" was Lemieux. Stamkos is most definitely the next big thing in hockey and he's only gonna get better. He and Ovechkin will be having goal wars for the next decade. Whether or not Stamkos wants his game to focus on being a pure shooter like Ovechkin is solely up to him and that will be the only thing stopping him from winning the Richard every year.
@Viper102650 Mario was never even touted as "The Next One". When Lindros came up in Juniors they were calling him "The Next One" because he was blowing up the scoring leader board unlike anyone since Wayne in the CHL. He actually was better than Wayne because he was a more complete player much like Gordie. You can say Stamkos, Ovechkin, and Sid are "The Next Big Thing" but not "The Next One" because that title was given to Lindros over 20 years ago.
@gunner525 Can't say Lindros wasn't worth the hype at the time but I was going on strictly on the fact that Lemieux is probably the closest one to challenge Wayne of being the greatest ever despite not being touted as the second coming. Lindros was a hell of a player but just because he was touted as the Next One doesn't mean someone else isn't worthy of that title. Ovechkin (maybe Stamkos) are the closest thing we will have to Gretzky's scoring ability and Crosby to his play making ability.
@gunner525 And the game is too different now to draw comparisons. Years ago you'd have over half a dozen 50 goal scorers and today you'd be lucky to have 2. It comes as a result of a difference in defensive schemes and a revolution in how goaltending is played started by guys like Roy, Belfour and Hasek in the 1990's. If one said that Tavares is The Next One since he broke Gretzky's junior records would be like comparing apples to oranges. He'd be lucky to have 400 goals by the time he retires.
@Viper102650 This year Stamkos and Crosby had 51 and Ovechkin had 50. Ovechkin has only had one season under 50 and that was around 48. In his first four or so years Ovechkin has well over 200 goals. The goals are coming up because defense is weakening since they took out the two line pass and made the hook and release back checking a penalty. Players can get much more speed entering the zone now and have better hands than ever. It's pretty much the way it was in the 80's.
@gunner525 Thank God on that. However, I think a lot of Ovechkin's totals come from his talent. Stamkos is a hell of a scorer but not at Ovechkin's level imo. And this is coming from a die hard Lightning fan. Scoring will go up but I doubt it will be like the 80's. All you have to do is watch the Monday Night Miracle with Doug Wickenheiser netting the game winner and you see Vernon AT LEAST 8 feet out of the net. Pull that shit today and you will never make it out of juniors.
@gunner525 eric lindros was never even gonna be compared to gretzky stamkos and ovechkin will be crosby is nothing theres way more talented players in the league than him want me to write a list of them??
@apdanglez I think what Gunner is getting at is the fact that when Eric was coming out of junior he was by far the most dominating prospect that had ever been scouted up to that point. The hype he created for himself was SO massive that no one else can ever be "The Next One". Eric REALLY IS the only "Next One" he just never became it. Since then, the media and NHL has never (nor will they ever) said "The Next One" with as much conviction and belief, not even of Crosby. That's how big Eric was.
@Sensfaithful1 sid is not even close to the best stamkos from now on will have more points in his career then sid and datsyuk zetterberg are both better then crosby cause they shut him down like n other in the straight 2 finals
are you serious? im a big stamkos fan but im also a realist. sid will always have more points than stamkos just because he can score from anywhere. and if sid woulda played a full season he would have beaten stamkos, anyone for that matter, in points and goals. i like stamkos but he is pretty one sided as a goal scorer
Naah, if you see it like that then you could say the same thing about Ovechkin. All im saying is that Stamkos scores his goals 90% with the huge onetimer whereas Ovechkin/Crosby etc. score them from everywhere
40 goals on the year, 76 points, 3rd in goals behind none other than Crosby and Ovechkin. 5th in point scoring. He is on pace for 51 goals, 97 points. This guy should seriously be considered for the MVP and could easily catch Crosby or Ovechkin for the Goal title. Most lethal shot from the right point in the NHL.
yeh it is too bad that thats the most proud thing of urself right now. how about bobby orr, howe, gretzky, lemieux. chatting with sakic after he played his last nhl game last year and skating with iginla and heatley in kelowna. yeh NBD buddy! shut up
Why do people always try and hold these players up to absurd heights? I'm not saying he couldn't score 30+ goals he is a very skilled player but say he has a drought, or plays injured in some games which will limit his ability to score? Top prospects are always held up to expectations so high that no matter what they give people want more calling him a saviour is a bit strong at his age, i bet the when he slips up hell become the whipping boy which isnt fair because all players try their best..
not the next one but definitley will be a good one. im more confident he will work out then hedman will. and he is fun to watch he has a great skill set.
yeah he was definitly a bit of an upset, once he gets a few years under his belt hes gonna be great tho I think tampa shoulda went with duchene, him and stamkos with st louis and lecavalier wouldve been huuuuge
21 points in his last 22 games played? 13 of them goals, 8 PPG on the year, now vinny returns to health, victor hedman at the point, stamkos 2nd line with prospal.. TB with a solid backup goalie in nitomakki , watch out for this team 09-10. stamkos scores 40 goals this year, heard it here first.
well hmmm...

Yea, one sided as a goal scorer. How does his assists affect his one sidedness as a GOAL SCORER?

@WFR the fact that he had more assists suggests he was more focused on being a playmaker, not just scoring himself
