  • Ms. "Game Show Craver" must not really have been so much of one, as she left out "Super Password" and "Scrabble".

  • Jim Perry deserves his star on Canada's Walk of fame. For shows like Eye Bet, Headline Hunters, the Miss Canada Pageant and of course Definition.

  • Hey, Mitt. Thanks for letting us get a glimpse of the beautiful Stepfanie Kramer. What a BABE!

  • $8,000,000 in 6 years? not bad.

  • I wish this version had lasted longer for 2 reasons. 1, because I loved the show, and 2, to spare us that crappy 2007 revival called "Temptation"

  • @johnissoevil Yeah, at least till 1991.

  • The bonus should of been played for the car + $50K, end a great gameshow with a bang

  • I think that same day "Card Sharks"(with Bob Eubanks) and "Super Password"(Bert Convy) also ended. When those 2 shows plus $ale of the Century ended that day, I think it's a safe bet that the game show era had officially ended.

  • Jim Perry and Richard Dawson= the 2 BEST game show hosts EVER.

  • I remember watching this episode back in 1989. I was on Spring Break., and it was interrupted by President Bush's press conference, so until today I was never able to see the full final episode of my favorite game show at that time.

  • does anyone have the theme here in the clear?

  • It was really sad when Sale Of The Century aired its series finale on March 24, 1989. It must have been very emotional for everyone who worked for SOTC from 1983-1989.

  • @catbeast2007 Most definitely. My brother and I used to enjoy watching this show when USA Network reran it almost two decades ago. I don't know if it's been rerun anywhere since 1994.

  • What is Jim and June Perry up to nowadays? Respond back.

  • @rksncu - they both celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and currently have a pottery company in North Carolina.

  • Within a year or so, the rest of the NBC game shows would meet their end. Only TPIR stands as monument to the past.

  • this show never aired on the NBC station in Philadelphia. The NBC station at the time there was KYW.

  • Wow. You don't see "backstage" endings like this every day. I'm just now coming across your videos, and I'm surprised you were able to get access to these master tapes -- they're usually locked away in a vault and never seen again. Thanks!

  • 1. MittDawson, I saw your name in the credits. Is that you? Your family lived in Houston in which I heard from Jim Perry in a 1988 episode when he mentioned that your family now watches on KPRC in which Sale joined it's daytime schedule in the one video. My NBC station WDIV in Detroit (KPRC's sister station) had aired it's entire NBC run. 2. Did the Detroit NBC station get the news bulletin on the Exxon Valdez incident during the credits?

  • Whether Detroit got interrupted with the news is your guess as good as mine, but good luck, maybe someone locally kept an air copy.

  • What about in Detroit? Did my NBC affilite WDIV get the special report on the Exxon Valdez oil spill during the credits of the Sale of the Century finale? I want the same episode uploaded but on the east coast feed taken from WDIV from Detroit to see where the special report got in.

  • He didn't have to! His son's name was in the credits.

  • Jim's goodbye was very telling and seemed very general for an emcee at the end of every game show; he should have mentioned his own son.

  • Jim Perry and his wife celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in June. Congrats!

  • 2:23 onwards - a very fitting ending to one of America's greatest game shows ever.

  • it's definately one of the few that will stick in any game show addict's mind

  • I was wondering where u can get the sound effects like bells, sirens etc.?

  • 6 years and 1578 episodes of fun. Godspeed, $OTC. ;-)

  • Now, Mitt, correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard that on the day this episode was broadcast, Jim's final goodbye was cut short in the Eastern and Central Time Zones because of an NBC Special Report. I heard it was on the Exxon Valdez crash in Alaska. Is that true?

  • I know the east and central TZ's of this last SOTC airing was interrupted by the NBC news, but I don't remember why. I've heard rumors that Pres George Sr cut in with a press conference, but I dunno for sure.

  • Only $6000? Why couldn't he play for the car so they could give everything away? Come on!

  • The end game should of been played for the car and $50K to let the show go out with a bang

  • "Spider" died.

  • How fitting that this show ended with a balloon drop because no show had more balloon drops than Sale of the Century! Each 1 special in its own way! To the person who posted this video thank you so much and it's about time someone posted this video here on YouTube because I've been hoping someone would! Thanks again! P.S. Do you have any memorable $100,000 tournament wins from Scrabble because if you do and if you could post those then I would appreciate that even more dude!

  • Mitt Sale was a great show I wish it was still on the air today.

  • me too, however, all good things must come to an end...but, ah yes, we will remember it well.

  • Be happy to know that you worked on this version and not the crappy revival that Rossi hosted last season.

  • Mitt, as part of the production staff, what were part of your duties working on this show? Also, what was Jim Perry like? I'm guessing he had a lot of frequent flyer miles considering he also hosted "Definiton" in Canada. What else have you worked on?

  • Incredible. At least there is something good. I think that this ended along with Scrabble that year.

  • Sale ended in '89, Scrabble ended in 1990, about 1 year later.

  • Comment removed

  • This ended the same day as "Super Password" did, but "Scrabble" lasted until 1990, and came back for a few months in 1993.

  • that's when they normally "fade to black" at the end of the show.

  • Good find indeed. That was Jim's last regular appearance on TV here in the U.S., outside of Mark DeCarlo's "Studs" appearance, his infomercials and his CNBC appearance in 1997. He was on TV for at least another year or two in Canada before he called it a career there after some 25 years.

  • Do you have his 1997 CNBC interview? I'd love to see it.

  • NBC in Burbank, Studio 3 (Jay Leno's stage now, Carson was next door in 1) We were center stage in the back where the winners' game was played, (you can see the floor lights chasing if that helps get your bearings, there was a normally a white circular wheel on the floor...all pieces were removable, the winners game and host podium were on tracks....we pulled the curtain back that week to expose the studio walls, as if it were moving day for SOTC, don't know if anyone got that..thanks.

  • Where exactly did they shoot this sequence?

  • That would be wonderful if you could post it in its entirety. I have Jim's book "The Sleeper Awakes" which I have read cover-to-cover - so its very fascinating to have read that and to be seeing this clip... I also had the pleasure of attending some tapings of CS and SotC during the short time I lived in LA in the '80's - great to be seeing who I think is one of the best emcees of all time.

  • from member zachhoran:(sorry, I think I accidentally deleted your comment)

USA didn't air the last episode of $otC, they got up to Tue or Wed of the final week, and then went to the 1985-86 syndie version which I suspect Mitt might have worked on. The almost 2000 shows included the syndicated version, as Jim announced the 1500th show in late 1988 IIRC.

  • In retrospect, I wish we had run the last week intact, but USA Network decided that Jim saying goodbye might be interpreted as goodbye to the reruns, and I agreed....so they pulled the last 2 episodes, and replaced them at their discretion, then recycled to the beginning...sorry folks!..We had no idea there would be such a fan following all those years later, and I know the staff appreciates your kind comments.

  • WOW!! Thanks so much for posting this!! I never got to see the original and since I dont like at home in the States anymore there's no way to catch reruns.

  • don't forget reruns on USA

  • Thanks to Shrub Sr.'s pep talk cutting in at 10:21AM EST on 3/24/89, this final $otC segment wasn't seen by most until a decade later thanks to the internet trading circuit.
