I looked up Six Months in a Leaky Boat by Split Enz and found a rather heated discussion by the uploader and someone who left a comment. The discussion pertains to the similarities between this song by Dave Dee and split enz. There are one or two similarities in background effects but, there is nothing blatantly obvious. Too bad two people have to argue about something so simple. BTW, this is a great song and I have never heard of Dave Dee and the group. I will look for them on vinyl.
Yes, listening again I love the way they've incorporated a sea shanty into a fast rhythmic pop song. Nowadays it would be full of pap about how the relatives of the doomed crew are faring and crying and no doubt carry sme kind of safety "message" about sailing in choppy seas. Call me a cycnic.
Great band and lovely guys too. And they could do it on stage, night after night, week after week. I shudder to think how many thousand gigs they must have played, both as a full band and as DBM&T. Those fabulous harmonies were all done in about two takes. Tich is a cracking guitarist, a real talent and a great player live too. RIP, Dave - a real and sad loss to the music business. Dizzee Rascal should cover this, like.
thanks for putting this on youtube. I was just a kid when this song came out but I still remember pretending to play a guitar and singing along with this song in NZ where I live. My big brother had the band's LP Album and I loved everything they did. I was listening to a live version of Dave Dee and the guys playing Xanadu (youtube) and it was so cool. They have just got better with age. RIP Dave.
What a great band, good honest enjoyable music, they never attempted to be anything but what they actually were, a wonderful band, I always loved their music, R..I.P. Dave.
Loved all their stuff but forty years on have still never been able to make out the lyrics at 1.54 which start ".....she goes down with....." - can anyone enlighten me please?!
The phrase is: The ocean rounds in fury on a man who fights against it all alone (keep on, Antoinette), She goes down with a sigh and with her his last cry, Antoinette!

Just got the 2-CD "Complete Collection" of these guys. Their songs are just bouncy, happy, feel good tunes! All of them. Great harmonies, great melodies. Too bad they never "made it" over here in the States (except for the low charting "Zabadak" in 1967). This one here is just pure pop-rock BLISS!

A great great themed songs produced perfectly to give the feel of the sea wreck through it's music.. They'd never "get" it on BGT.

Thisis FEELGOOD music.
Although at the time(as a Stones fan) I was too 'cool' to appreciate it,but these tunes get better with the years.
