@89Carfreak Or save my money, upgrade to better parts and still be under the cost of a Rubicon. It all depends on how far you are upgrading. If you stick to light wheeling and a mild build then yes I agree.
@jhuntjeeper It was on its way out so I finished it =D Have the lockers in already and a motor swap in process. 364ci should be big enough? And a NV4500 for good measure.
@MrIslandguy46 Uhh try again, you have the right idea but lockers will spin less as both tires will turn at the exact same speed. Their disadvantage is in corners which is why selectable lockers is the way to go.
The only thing with lockers is on side hills and steep grades tend to slip more where limited slip always keep one or more tires garbing...not spinning unless the other tire slips
It causes of all your wheels to lock up and turn the exact same speed no matter what .. instead of 1 tire rotating the other 1 does nothing.... it's used in part of the differential system ... that earring in your front and rearend
@MrIslandguy46 I have and LSD in my CJ and it really doesn't help more this type of stuff. Its good for slippery flat surfaces like snowy or muddy roads but not so much for crawling over obstacles.
Nice jeep! I though you were going to make it over at the end there. That was a hell of a climb, they never look as technical on camera as it does in person.
@vantagetes My first mod was a winch. then i went deep into the pockets and went with dana's and 513's and all the rest of the stuff after that That gear works well on 40's. I dont now how long youv;e been jeepin but i usauly tell folks is to buy a winch first. good quality investment.
if you dont have lockers and are losing tracktion due to cross axles then apply a little brake to even out the torque between both axles. Always works for my Land Rover 90.
you dont need lockers you just need more practice lower pressures and more clutch control, you can buy your way out of it but most would prefer to be proud that they did it by skill!?
learn to drive and buy something worth driving o yea how about getting a jeep with a motor thats worth driving it sounds like an old model t stupid ass
@vantagetes I have no problem with the Rubicon getting suspension before axles. It was just pretty embarrassing for my buds on the trail who got beat by my almost stock 2000 4runner on a beginners trail. They would either blow a c-clip out back or snap an axle. Their driving could have been the issue, but investment wise, good chromoly axles and a single locker at minimum will help out a bunch. Well, I hope I didn't offend you in any way, it could just be that I'm a TOYOTA fan 100%.
@cmlesschwab That's just them being poor drivers. Take this video for instance, a 2.5L with 33's and original gears. Nothing was broken that day, the Jeep community has been brainwashed into thinking "I need 40" tires and dana 60's or I'm not cool". But we tend to forget the days of the flatfender with inferior drivetrains that would still make most capable wheeling rigs look stupid, my own included.
@vantagetes someone who gets it! refreshing in a world of "xtreme 4x4" idiot kids that think you cant go offroad without 400 HP, rockwell axles, ARB lockers(they dont what they are or do, but they know you gots ta have them), etc etc etc
@vantagetes I agree, I have 35s on my stock dana 44 and dana 30 with 3.73s and I havent broken anything yet and have done some stuff more intense than this
@cmlesschwab I think I would like to take a stab at a response for this. I (Alex) own a Rubicon, I also helped put the long arm suspension on this Jeep. I also got my suspension done before my axles why? Because who builds axles when your still sitting on 28" tires? Throw on the lift and some tires, get a winch and work on the axles when the time comes. And you also don't need a Rubicon, yeah I love my heavier axles but it's not the "be all end all" of Jeeping.
Seriously, the Rubicon would have been a bargain. It's not just lockers that are important. The front and rear Dana 44's and the 4-1 Rock-Trac transfer case are totally worth the extra dough. This has gotten me in and out of a lot of shit.
@vantagetes i rock the 4banger too! Does pretty well on the trail. Got a selectable locker going in the front end in a few days. 4 banger is getting yanked this summer and a TDI is going in its place. Cant wait to hit the trails with a diesel jeep :) Good to see you rocking the 4banger!
@Darkcruzer23 Hell no, if you plan on upgrading anything the huge extra cost for the rubicon edition isn't worth it. If you plan on doing a minor lift and wheeling close to stock then maybe.
I have a 94 Explorer, I love it, but I know what you mean about lockers. I'll be grabbing some aussies soon, when I do gears. I want to see the vid of your Jeep on the 8.8 and locked!
@Hortgeek As long as it goes where you want it doesn't matter what it costs. I have a HP D30 and a Ford 8.8 with ARB lockers and 4.56 gearing since this video, I'll have to make another video!
@vantagetes Nice! My next move is to eliminate my vacuum disco and get sway disconnects. By then I will be on the hook for 10000 plus in tires lol. My wife hates me.
@runitsbc I took a piece of 3/4" and cut the tab part out of that (just torched out the hole for the shackle and cleaned it up with a die grinder). After slotting the stock bumper with a cut off disk I found a large piece of bar stock (big round pin) that fit nicely into the cross member tube and slid a good 6" down into the tube. The 3/4" plate had another hole cut and slipped onto the end of the tube then everything was welded. Rock. Solid.
I had to respond after I saw your post, buddy what are you talking about. I've seen jeeps do climbs much steeper than this. Jeeps are built to be rugged.
He does need 3 things : lower tire pressure, lower gearing, lockers at least in the rear
Dont blow the money on lockers they wont help you in this situation. At most do a locker in the rear and get yourself a decent winch. No shame in pullin cable. TJs dont have the wheelbase for that kind of angle unfortunately
@goober2285 So the part where the weight unloads and then that one tire just spins has nothing to do with loss of forward momentum? You sir, have no idea what you are talking about. I've also found front lockers to be more benificial for climbing as the weight transfer to the rear usually keeps enough traction on both tires and you can use the front locker to pull the nose around.
on your first video of ddb2 - Diggin Ditchin N Bitchin Mobile #2 Trial Run. i suggested that you get air lockers and you said no way! always listen to your subscribers! =)
@stevendonovan1987 I disagree, you stated air lockers were cheaper than "normal ones" so I pointed out spring lockers at about 1/3 the price. But since you don't get cool buttons that light up with those ones I opted for the ARB =D
@vantagetes correct you are as always! i dont know why i said they would be cheaper tho. i wonder what i was thinking at the time? keep those great vids coming!
@45von It's not a choice. It came with 2.72:1 low range and 4.10:1 axles. My choice is 4:1 low and 4.56:1 axles, which are coming thursday with my ARB lockers.
@vantagetes Dude I have 3.73s and 35 inch tires on my Jeep. I have a brand spankin new Warn M8000 just sitting because I don't have a bumper for it, yet that costs more money. I also need a rear tire carrier and rear bumper because the 35 inch spare beats the hell outta my stock tailgate and is weakening the sh*t outta it. I got a quote from a reputable gear swap place parts and labor would be 1400 bucks!!! I need new gears but all that other stuff, what should i do?
@Dodgeoffroadfreak First thing to ask yourself; do you want to run stock axles with 35" tires? The D35 inst the greatest rear axle as it likes to break, and when it does your axle shaft (with the wheel still bolted onto it) starts to walk out. A ford 8.8 can be sourced for cheap (got mine for free) and can be installed for well under $800 (brackets are around $300 plus welding time). Same bolt pattern and width but much stronger. D30 isn't bad and will survive but its not great either.
@Dodgeoffroadfreak Once you decide which axles to run then I would regear them before anything else. No point in mounting a winch if you can't get to where you are getting stuck right? Plus wheeling alone is a no no so you can always get your buddy to pull you out. Look at getting/making a winch plate. If you get a bumper later you can sell it again, and for now pull your back seat out and put your tire in there. Use the seat belt through the rim to strap it down.
That was not the tires that looked like a clutch on the way too it's death or a fast melt down into the fly wheel either way not good. You may want to check and see if there's a heavy duty clutch kit for jeep along with the lockers,
@mutt1256 Was a bunch of shit burning off the manifold (my rad cap leaks slightly cause it's the stupid plastic tank) actually but the clutch is on the list of upgrades.

lockers arent always the biz... they have some dissadvantages
MY landrover is fited with a front truetrack , rear and center difflock + traction control
Als it has a Diesel: lots of torque , with anti stall , so you dont have to touch the trothle
no need for high rpms : wich leads to skidding the tires and braking things
i think it would have done this even without Truetrack and rear locker.
but anyway ! nice jeep !
