''taking full advantage of her flexibility'' .....right, well there was me thinking gymnasts needn't bother being flexible in routines. god elfi's an idiot...
I wonder whether Alexandra's allegations of abuse from Octavian are true or not. I would hope not, because he seems like a nice coach to his countless other athletes, but I wonder if he did not like her,. They said that he was "open about the fact that she is not as hard a worker" as Simona. I hope he had a good reason for pulling her out. I wonder if there was some bad blood between the two of them . Maybe it was the reason she wrote the book.
I love Simona, and I don't blame her for Alexandra not being in the all-around. Simona was a great gymnast, and a class act. In the next Olympics, she initially refused to accept the gold-medal, and after doing so, gave it back to Andrea. Since the all-around gold is so coveted, I'm not sure many gymnasts would have the class to do that. I just feel bad for Alexandra. She never got her opportunity to shine in the Olympics. I feel bad for Andrea too, but at least everyone was behind her
@Katie27000000 Simona is a better gymnast than Alexandra. I understand why many like Marinescu since she has the most artistic style of the Romanians . However Amanar had some of the best difficulty, tumbling, vaulting, form, and power in the World at the time. Her team optionals were amazing, had she duplicated those she would have won the AA over Lilia by alot. It would have been foolish for Romania not to find a way to put her in the AA she would have missed due to a fluke fall only.
@ants2876 You make very, very good points about Simona's worthiness to be in the all-around. I agree with you she totally deserved to be there but so did Alexandra. This is so difficult because Gina and Millo also qualified, but in my opinion weren't quite as talented . Simona was definitely more accomplished, and possibly more consistent than Alexandria, but the latter might have had more difficult, more artistic skills.
I think it sometimes comes down to a choice between doing what's fair and doing what's more likely to result in gold. It's not always fair to the gymnasts who spend their lives working for one moment. Then again, some really talented gymnasts are deserving of second chances, like Gusu or Zamo so you can argue it both ways
@Katie27000000 if anything I would have wanted to take Milosovici out of the AA. I think she was the weakest gymnast out of Amanar, Milo, Gogean, and Marinescu by 96. She was clearly past her prime and her skills had stagnated and regressed ever since the end of 94 atleast. However she had her name value which is the only reason she was kept in probably. Even though she didnt end up as the top Romanian Amanar was the the Romanian with the most scoring potential and they had to put her in.
@ants2876 Good point about Millo. But didn't she qualify fair and square? As far as your comment about Simona being more talented than Alexandria, I don't know because I haven't seen the latter much at all, but the media at the time were comparing her, not Simona, to Nadia, which makes me think she had a lot of unfulfilled potential.
@ants2876 And she definitely had grace and style that Simona didn't, but Simona was incredibly consistent and had incredibly difficult gymnastics on some of her routines. She was definitely more accomplished, but that might have been a little bit due to Octavian's dislike of Alexandria.
She's probably working out her frustration at not being put in the all-around after she had qualified. I would be frustrated too. It seems unfair that she was taken out.
Their just hasn't been a gymnast quite as beautiful as Podkopayeva. Her legs and feet, the ligns are so like a ballet dancer, and yet she is so powerful, the whole package indeed.
politics & gymnastics don't mix. marinsecu should've had the spot she earned - and frankly the soviet coach shouldn't have pulled someone out that earned it in 1992. grrrrrr.
Frankly, I agree with you. It's totally unfair to take away someone's spot if they have erred it. Nothing against Simona, who is great. But the commentators were all implying how unfair it was that Rosa got pulld out. They should have said something about Alexandea.
@eMthegymnast I noticed that between the 1996 and the 2000 Olympics, all the gymnasts got rid of their more obvious earrings and necklaces and makeup. Was there a change of rules or something?
@azuritefire5 Yeah, came at a perfect time too when the commentators were mentioning her "bad habits"- one of Belu's reasons for taking her out of the AA competition. Lolz...
Khorkina could have easily won, she's was amazing, but --as always-- she fell on her own skill (lol?) and was dumped. When Khorkina doesn't fall, she wins. Few gymnasts can say that.
Actually, the skill is named after the gymnast who first competes the skill at any F.I.G. sanctioned international event. She did it better than anyone who came after her though. I will grant you that.

the move khorkina fell on was a new one which she and her coach just put in then. they knew they were taking a risk, and it cost her.
