If they had the fish hanging by strings in the lagoon, how did they do that if there is nothing above the water to hold it with? Does my question make any sense?
@PHAEDRIDER I thought the fish in this ride were held by strings, right? How did strings hold the fish in the lagoon if there is nothing above the water to attach the string to. I guess I am just not making sense. Thank you for trying to help : )
@tamisweetie it really doesnt, it is really hard for me to believe that someone would seriously ask that question , but the fish FLOAT , they are tied to the BOTTOM of the lagoon so they wont float to the surface..
@PHAEDRIDER I see. I never thought of that!! I am a slow person in general, but thanks for hurting my feelings. I wonder, when there were " live" mermaids in the lagoon, they must have had trouble swimming with all the string every where : )
@tamisweetie i had no intention of hurting your feelings. i am sorry nonetheless. it was wrong for me to assume you were joking. i'm not sure how close they let the mermaids close to where that actual ride was, but danger like that might have been why they stopped the practice.
they should have kept the old theme but with nemo effects. so instead of a CG talking fish there would be a CG sea serpent and mermaids. oh & better animatronics.
Man, I miss the original version so much. As a child, this was the pinnacle of every trip to the park. I'm glad it's back, since the Nemo version is mostly the same, with the CG stuff added in, and new models for the sea-life.
this might sound kind of random, but do you think they have cat walks inside the cavern incase something happened, or for any other reason????? i am just wondering if something were to happen, would there be a safe way out?! has anything happened before on this ride? sorry for all the questions!!!
@tamisweetie Both of my parents used to work there back in their college days; and my dad worked the Subs. Yes, there is a catwalk for maintenance and emergencies. (though, of course, that was a long time ago, and may have changed - though logically, it would simply be upgraded.)
I remember when I was little, seeing the subs sitting in the lake. I always wanted to go on them. Thank you for posting this. I haven't been on the new Nemo one yet. (Last time I went it was the grand opening. People were camping out in line.) I'm sure it's not as good as this one!.
Ive noticed that Disney's recent rides have a familiar face to back it up. Nemo's Subs. Toy Story Mania. whatever happened to old fashion imagineering ingenuity? There most recent is Expidition everest so at least thats a nice addition to Disney Rides that do not promote they're characters.
I remember the last time I went on this ride. It was night time, so you couldn't see the lagoon itself, so you had to wait till you got into the cave, but oh well, this ride was always a must when my family and I went to disneyland. Now it's replaced with finding nemo, and all tho the ride's alright, it's not as good as the original, especially when having to wait an hour in line just to get on.
Survey; if they remade the counterpart of this ride in Walt Disney World (with a Little Mermaid theme instead of a Finding Nemo theme, or maybe a different underwater Disney theme), should it be put in Magic Kingdom, Epcot, or Animal Kingdom?
really pixar is starting to take over the parks and its not making me happy. the only pixar movie i like is toy story because its the first but what happened to cartoons? i dont see any disney cartoons anymore
@M1CK3Yanimation Same here, Toy Story is awesome, but IMO alot of other Pixar movies are eh. A recent Disney movie that came out that I liked is The Princess and the Frog. It kinda bugs me that they consider this ride a tomorrowland ride and not a fantasyland ride. Also I think The Little Mermaid should have been build here, thats a classic disney movie.
@M1CK3Yanimation They're not taking over. There's 5 stand-alone attractions and 1 teeny-tiny-itsy-bitsy incredibly detailed themed land devoted to Pixar. Considering that's out of 88 total attractions between both Theme Parks...
@SoCalDork Yeah, but why mess with a classic. Have you noticed that folks think the sea creatures pushed up by the tsunami in Japan are radiation influenced?? I got an email and pics in it included an angler fish, a moray eel and the crab with extra legs and sharp spineys. This ride was entertaining but it was also educational. All the good parts got taken out. I don't like it anymore. And before you say it, yes, I already don't ride it anymore because of this.
@Wakkosgirl Actually, I agree with you. The new version with Nemo & friends sucks. If I want to watch "Finding Nemo", I'll do it from the comfort of my couch- not in a sardine can. ;)
I loved the original Submarine Voyage growing up, and I still lament the lost opportunity Imagineering had to renovate the Subs, keeping the original storyline but updating all of the effects. Can you imagine how amazing the Subs would be if they were done with today's technology? :D
@M1CK3Yanimation PIXAR is DISNEY. Pixar is like Disney's main animation studio now. The guys that started pixar OWN the original disney animation studio now, and the people who used to work at disney now work at pixar. It's all the same people. So FINDING NEMO as well as any other disney-pixar film 100% belongs in the parks. Besides even if pixar was some sort of separate company taking over... that would be alright, because pixar films are INCREDIBLE!!!
you do know that this ride was based off the disney movie 20,000 leagues under the sea right, but yeah atleast in this one the charachters arent just slapped everywhere just so m,ore people would ride it
It is slightly based after 20,000 Leagues. The idea came from the movie and one of the submarines is named the Nautalis but other than that there were not many references. But you make a good point. Nemo is all there for self promotion. Disney is king at that.
I know the new version is bad, but at least be greatful that they brought the subs back unlike WDW's fate (got covered in concrete and had a playground placed on top of it)
Your right, Disneyland is lucky enough to still have a submarine ride. I wouldn't say the Nemo subs are bad...they just don't hold the same magic as the original subs. I still ride the nemo subs on occasion, but if there's an hour wait, forget about it.
In the 70's/60's/Around that time, they did have women who would put on mermaid tails and swim in the pool as well as sit on the rocks up top and wave at people, but the ones I remember seeing when I was little were large "dolls."
This was the best ride at Disneyland ever! The last I rode the subs was in the summer of 1998, before it closed. I just turned 9 years old when they closed it. I actually rode on it 5 times. After the shut down, I became a really big fan to this ride, and I started to know more about this ride and why it closed. In 2005 I went to the Disney Galley and managed to buy a mini poster to this ride and I own two homemade videos to this ride. I will always be a big fan to this ride.
I'm not real happy with all Pixar rides but listen, just be glad we have the subs back! I for one am very happy to have them up and running Nemo or not.
Pixar movies are not crap! I agree that some are worse than others, but Wall-e actually felt like classic disney movie at the end. however I will agree that computer affects should not have been in this ride, it would have been fine with animatronics.
if they were gonna put somethin in, why not atlantis? finding nemo is well...im sorry, but finding nemo is just DUMB. i cant STAND pixar movies!!!!! they lack all the stuff disney USED to be known for-the heart, the classic good guys/bad guys, the awesome songs, and, of course, the MAGIC!
ooh, talking cars, robots, and fish! HOW MAGICAL! and toy story is OK, but they're just pushing it now...im so sick of it! BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL DISNEY!!! NOT THE COMPUTER CRAP!!!
Wow i wish that ride was still open when i went to disneyland..
Wooah 2 hours in line im started to feel sorry for my mum, when i went to disney land my mum was to sik to go on rides so she just stood in line for us man im a horrible person
this ride is so much better then the finding nemo ride... ;-; at the end of the finding nemo ride they make this mean joke "oh we better pull up before we see a sea serpant or a mermaid" dude i started crying and then the people where like "why are you crying" and i said "i miss the old ride"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You were crying? I think you need to grow up. And a lot of people must like the new ride because the line was rediculously packed yesterday, and it was well worth the wait.
why in the fuck damn nemo they were planning on making it atlantis the lost empire like it would be damn awesome and they messed it with a stoopid fish! Good game Disney...
I don't know why they removed 20,000 Leagues from the Magic Kingdom. It was one of their key attractions and the MK has never been the same or as good without it. Its demise probably made Mike Eisner's bonus a little bigger though.
I was on this in 1977. There was a real MERMAID girl that would suddenly swim past the windows unexpectedly. It was great as a kid thats why I remembered it! Wow...what memories...thanks god for WALT DISNEY!
thanx for posting. I was 5 when I first rode this in 1959 and it was considered so high tech and amazing. You couldn't have real fish because of the upkeep and beause it would be too hard to frame a story with live aquatics.Walt would never expose kids to the inevitable floating fish! LOL Good times. Looking forward to the new ride.
Wow! Thanks! My dad was telling me all about the original ride, and I never got to ride it...Now I know what it was like! My dad used live right next to Disneyland, and he would go there every day...this was one of his favorite rides...at least I'll be able to actually ride the Finding Nemo version!
THANKS SO MUCH! I couldn't get enough of this ride when I was young...I just remember that one time I went to Disneyland, and the subs weren't there...I was just like, "oh well"
i guess your a disneyfreak like me except i dont even know that. thanks for the info. it wouldve been really cool to see that ride even if i did i'd probably be like 4 considering it closed 1998.
I admit that after the original subs closed the imagineers did play around with some ideas for what to do with the lagoon, because they wanted it to come back in some form, but those early ideas didn't work out and it wasn't until Finding Nemo came out that they got inspired again. So in 2004 they set up a test site at the lagoon and thankfully it got approved so now the subs are finally back. :)
Thanks for posting this video. Last time I rode in the submarines was in Disney World about 2 years before they shut the ride down and it's the one ride that I truly miss.
yea im sure nemo will be cool too i actually cant wait to ride it! but im just sad that it was gone and im sad that they didnt make it into a little mermaid submarine like they were originally going to do in the late 90's.
This ride was the shit. It felt sooooooo real. Loved the mermaids. This was the closest thing to an underwater fantasy world. Ahhhhhhh, all mental imagery now. Thanks for taking me waaaaaaay back.
Ya miss it, huh? Well, it's not fully gone! Thanks to ParkHopper, we've got the video of it! Now we all need office chairs to make it feel like we're actually moving!
The ride opened in 1959 before the disabled access laws. I belive the new version starring Nemo will have access for the disabled but I don't know how it will work.
Although there will be some animated images outside of the portholes. But they will not be tv screens. They will still be real windows giving people a real underwater view.
Well, actually, only WDW's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" had Captain Nemo. Disneyland's "Submarine Voyage" just had an anonymous Captain. However, Disneyland's ride DID have a sea craft on display in the queue that was named "Nemo"
thank you so much, i live in vegas and we go to disneyland about 1-2 times a year. and i always see this big pond or lake and my mom told me about this ride when she lived in california and ive always wanted to know wat u do in this ride, ive been so interested in it i dont know why, do u know why it closed
The ride was getting old. It was very expensive to maintain. It needed a major refurbishment that also would have been very expensive. The management team that ran Disneyland at the time felt the expense was not justified so they closed it.
Fortunately different people are running Disneyland now and soon the subs will reopen.
hey man, I'm from vegas too and I've been to D-land since I was young almost every year....I remember going on this ride when I was like 6 and it soooo freaked me out, I thought we were really under water!! It sux they took it out.
i went on this. ride

i guess your a disneyfreak like me except i dont even know that. thanks for the info. it wouldve been really cool to see that ride even if i did i'd probably be like 4 considering it closed 1998.
DisneyFreakToTheMax 4 years ago
No problem.

and if you want to see the lagoon after remodeling 1 week after the nemo ride opened, check out my video.

Does anyone now howcome none of the marine life is real? Like none of the fish or turtles are moving!!
LolaRose07 4 years ago
No the turtles were moving...but NONE of the marine life is real.
772pilot 4 years ago
this is so old. why did they have to replace it. Nemo is still good though. worth 3 hours waiting
DisneyFreakToTheMax 4 years ago
When the ride closed in 1998 they had no intention of replacing it, it would have stayed closed forever of they hadn't thought of the Nemo idea.
The Nemo sub voyage is a lot of fun! Its really cool!

Damn, I never got to ride this. :(

I remember that I rode this at least once when I was little. The sea serpent freaked me out.
Suddenly I'm glad that I got to ride it when I did, though.
I'm that way with a lot of the rides they took out.
Like the Skyway. I miss the Skyway...

patrickattack 4 years ago
I remember riding that. Hard to believe it's been closed for so many years. :(
DonnaCelta 4 years ago
This ride was the shit. It felt sooooooo real. Loved the mermaids. This was the closest thing to an underwater fantasy world. Ahhhhhhh, all mental imagery now. Thanks for taking me waaaaaaay back.
I'm sure Finding Nemo will be cool too! =)
PSYCLONA 4 years ago
i got to ride it and i loved it and miss it :( its makes me sad that they put in a popualr movie (nemo) instead of real imagination.
patrickattack 4 years ago
Ya miss it, huh? Well, it's not fully gone! Thanks to ParkHopper, we've got the video of it! Now we all need office chairs to make it feel like we're actually moving!

How do they get handicapped people on this ride?
mdm1091 4 years ago
The ride opened in 1959 before the disabled access laws. I belive the new version starring Nemo will have access for the disabled but I don't know how it will work.

i heard rumors that the windows r gonna b TV screens 4 the new finding nemo ride is that true?
AlexG8462 4 years ago
Nope.
Although there will be some animated images outside of the portholes. But they will not be tv screens. They will still be real windows giving people a real underwater view.
hypnodude 4 years ago
no theres an acutal envierment
biffspiffygeekoid 4 years ago

hypnodude 5 years ago
Not only that but the organ in the ballroom scene of the Haunted Mansion was actually used in 20,000 leagues under the Sea movie
MadMike858 5 years ago
i love the fact of the whole nemo thing, that its finding nemo and the old ride had captain nemo, they better tie that into the new ride somehow.
klpeekl2000 5 years ago
Well, actually, only WDW's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" had Captain Nemo. Disneyland's "Submarine Voyage" just had an anonymous Captain. However, Disneyland's ride DID have a sea craft on display in the queue that was named "Nemo"

thank you so much, i live in vegas and we go to disneyland about 1-2 times a year. and i always see this big pond or lake and my mom told me about this ride when she lived in california and ive always wanted to know wat u do in this ride, ive been so interested in it i dont know why, do u know why it closed
MetalUpYourAss602 5 years ago
The ride was getting old. It was very expensive to maintain. It needed a major refurbishment that also would have been very expensive. The management team that ran Disneyland at the time felt the expense was not justified so they closed it.
Fortunately different people are running Disneyland now and soon the subs will reopen.
ParkHopper 5 years ago
thanks, and great job on all the other videos too
MetalUpYourAss602 5 years ago
They actually did have plans to re-open it into an Atlantis ride if the movie did well, but it flopped, so they abandoned all of the plans for it.

ParkHopper, I want to know, why did they make Space Mountain into Rockin' Space Mountain?

It was a promtional gimic to try and get more people in the parks during the slow season.
