  • It's 1964 not '54.

  • have to love this Thanks

  • Terrific tune written by the multi-talented Steve Allen. Aside from a great comedian, Steve Allen was a "creditable" (in his own words) jazz pianist, and prolific songwriter. Oddly enough, due to his passing resemblance to bandleader Benny Goodman, Allen portrayed him in the biopic "The Benny Goodman Story", with Goodman himself dubbing clarinet.

  • Sal Nistico was a fantastic player.

  • This is 1964 not 54.

  • TOTAL AWESOMENESS!!!! I love fun jazz songs like this!!!! This is one of the best!

  • The second tenor is Sal Nistico. I got a kick out of watching the dancers who seemed like they were moving to the rhythm of a complete other tune.

  • I sure wouldn't mind having gone to see that band with drummer Payne on the front

  • Nothing like Basie, Kenton, Herman, Severinsen bands !!!

  • man i wish todays sppoks were like count bassie...humble, polite, respectful not ignorant and arrogant..trust me michelle obama wants nothing to do with spooks from the hood either...obama and family are in marthas vineyard for august vacation....not a spook in sight except for the busboys and porters in the vineyard...ok i forgot professor gates and spike lee are there too...as far as they can get from bedford "pig" stye in brooklyn....

  • @SkunkDroppings Learning disabled pig.

  • @SkunkDroppings Your name says it all about you.

  • Who is the second tenor man the white guy spitin those notes out he was great .

  • This is great. Thanks for posting!

  • The drummer was Sonny Payne, a great player but a lot of people might condider that he was too flashy and too much a showoff. Someone like Harold Jones i think was better without trying to steal the show. Basie apparantly really liked him as he was with him for many years.

  • @stevebul

While I certainly respect your opinion, I think most band leaders would think that as long as the drummer helps keep time and plays with the style that fits the band, they can play with as much flair as they want. Certainly, Butch Miles has a wonderful flair that really engages the audience.

  • Didn't know the nalme of the drummer but found him fantastic to listen to and look at.

Tenor sax was no slouch either.

This zik is so exhilarating! I listened twice.

  • "I ,would much Rather, Watch and listen to Sonny Payne" than any modern , dude on the kit or video , switch ZIT STICK.. ask Dino......

  • Sal! N°1!

  • sal nistico!

  • I love this =)

Something modern jazz composers seem to have forgotten is that jazz was dance music when it came out. IMO, the majority of people that are up-and-commin in the jazz scene have forgotten that

  • Basie Rules!

  • I only found JJ and Kais version on iTunes.

  • does anyone know the name and the year of this recording? i found a version of "i can`t stop loving you" some time ago on youtube but i can't find it anymore. thx

  • count basie is a good player!

  • Count was NOT a "good" player. He was MAGNIFICENT!!! Contrary to "Duke," he only had to play a few chords and the band wouyld "pick-up" on the tempos, etc.

  • Oscar peterson told a story I think it was on the dick cavett show that he did a concert with basie and started playing a solo with riffs like basie almost inadvertantly and basie didnt like it.

  • "space", have no doubts about that, however, two things I have always known. If Basie was "pissed," it didn't last very long. In addition, Coun and Oscar remained close friends until their respective deaths.

  • Just so everyone's clear that IS Sal Nistico on second tenor

  • After leaving Basie's band, Sonny joined Harry James. The last time that I talked to Sonny was, in 1977. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1979. What a sweet, gracious and warm man he was.

  • Sonny was one of the all-time great drummers! Did you know him?

  • By the way, are you located in Sussex County, NJ? Definitely knew Sonny.....

  • The trumpeter on the far left is Buffalo's Sammy Noto, who had some beautiful recordings on the former Xanadu label. Sam had a club in Buffalo called the Renaissance II. One weekend back in the mid-'80s I heard Sal Nistico and Chet Baker. Chet came to Buffalo with no trumpet and was given Sam's! A great two nights, needless to say... By the way, Sal is sitting on the far right in the sax section. I'm told a lot of the Basie hornmen would often play the same solos each night. Not Sal or Sam!

  • I appreciate your knowledge my friend.

  • NOT Sal Nistico; Sam Netesco!!!!

  • No way, if you've ever heard Sal Nistico play, you can tell by the extreme articulation that it is him.

  • Check out Sonny Payne from 2:05 on.

  • the other tenor player looked like sal nistico

  • Yes it is!

  • please, who is the first tenor man?

  • Left side tenor man is Erick Dixon.

  • Don't know, but Steve Allen wrote the piece....

    Amazing huh?

  • Samson Talamon

  • Yeah. Sonny Payne!

  • fabulous! the count and sonny payne too!
