This is so fucking ironic it makes the already saddening NGE, a soul-haunting experience, and a marvelous one. So sad they only put out crappy childish fan-service animes nowadays.
@coreyadams25 I agree that something (other than mechanical setting and 3D tech etc.) is better in the Rebuild series, but I still prefer the old series particularly because of this movie ending, though I watched the rebuild even earlier.
The old series 'stops time' like never in any FILM else.
End of Evangelion remains the most amazing and wonderful thing I have ever seen after all these years. Neon Genesis Evangelion is my favorite story of all time-- book, movie, or otherwise.
this is very filosofical , to know that gendo was not the villian in the very end and shinji´s outburst to destroy the world came from his lack of courage to open up to his son was the climax in the whole series , leading shinji to feel regret and return the world to the previous status in the end
@Assimandelini Still, majority doesn't care. I didn't mean literally 'everyone', but majority rules. This series had more of an impact on viewers--or an impact period.
This song mademe mourn. This end it invites us to reflect on God, humanity, love, and ourselves. For me it is the best anime of all, and all the melodies and songs on the movie are the best of all animes.
It's a lucky thing that both asuka and shinji is in the evas during the instrumentality, otherwise shinji will have a hard time finding someone to reproduce with after he revert back to individuality
@bigfootsize12 The song was made just for this movie. Its performed by Arianne, who also did another song for EOE called Everything You've Ever Dreamed (unfortunately it ended up not being used, but it can still be found on some EVA soundtracks).

End of Evangelion is probably the most powerful and personal thing I've ever seen in my life. When I say personal, it's like... I can't even explain it.
@filmaddict24 i know what you mean, it left an impression on me aswell, one that i cant explain or put into words, ive never been able to understand exactly why this film made me feel the way it did, or even what it actually made me feel, something like sadness because of seeing the end of all things, the end of love hate pain joy friends enemies. i cant explain it. i just feel it.
The funny thing is that the music really does define this scene, at least for me. You could play anything here and dramatically change it. Tenacious D could be played here and make this scene something else, it's like play doh, really creepy nightmare fueling play doh.
You know, as a whole, I don't like End of Evangelion nearly as much as I liked the series' ending. EoE just seems a bit off the wall, with derailed characters, and more than a little pettiness by Anno Hideaki, whether conscious or not.
But
There are some individual scenes and elements in EoE that are absolutely brilliant. Undeniably and shiningly. This is one of them.
The subtitles on this version are different from the one I have. Is it the UK version or something? In my version Keal says, "The beginning and the end are one in the same. Yes, all is right with the world." It hearkens back to Nerv's motto: "God's in his heaven, all's right with the world."
Seele said "the beginning and the end share the same moment" I personally believe that the world was returning to primordial soup stage. One big consciousness, like the Gaia theory.
@JetJockey87 Yeah, but he also could be reffering to the fact that after this time would have no meaning to anyone. On the other hand, since rebuild of evangelion seems to somehow be some sort of sequel, he could also be reffering to that. That it is the end of the world and the beginning of another.
"Come, Sweet Death" is such an appropriate title for this song and scene. Even though the world is ending the feeling is still somewhat uplifting. Everyone is united as one, finally putting their differences aside and relinquishing their physical selves. God leaves only Asuka and Shinji alive, giving humans a clean slate. All of the sexual imagery is symbolizing rebirth and the conception of a new human race. Shinji is left with a choice, as he has always had throughout the series.
@bugglesman Now here's something to think about... Shinji, it is implied, enjoys classical music... I wonder what that track he's always listening to on his S-DAT is... oh wait...Bach had a piece named "Komm Suesser Todd"
@poutypufferfish I guess many people hate Shinji because he reminds them of themselves. He's not the typical anime character, that's for sure, but at least I think he was acting in a logical way in most situations. I wouldn't react very different if I was there, I think.
@JeBatser The fact that Shinji ISN'T a typical anime character (or a typical protagonist in general) is what gives him his appeal, in my opinion. You're very right, he's much more "real" than your typical anime character, and he behaves in a way that most people would given the circumstances. I suppose you're correct that people try and ignore that side of themselves that Shinji projects-- they just want to see the action hero, and not the human beneath.
I have a question. Three actually. Please explain what happened at 4:254:46 and 5:46. I have my theories but I find it hard to understand the meaning behind these scenes. Thank you and Evangelion for ever.
@AndreiArtsu @4:25 Yui is Eva unit 1 so she transformed and Gendo payed for not caring about Shinji. @4:46 I'm confused but I think they do that to maintain instrumentality. @5:46 Shinji and Rei fuse so Shinji decides the fate of humanity.
first part can be seen as a metaphor for yui rejecting gendo despite all of his efforts to reunite with her because of the way he neglected shinji
the second clip shows the mass produced evas in a state of ecstasy. if you recall, these evas had synced with lilith/rei so can be seen as a device to show what lilith/rei is feeling while allowing the actual manifestation of lilith to remain relatively stoic
the third part is when rei allows shinji to take over instrumentality
I love NGE with a genuine passion I have for few other shows, animated or otherwise... but I always wish we'd seen the "real" second-last episode, which I suspect was less "bitter" than the movie, but more detailed (and close at least to some of the movie's events, including this scene) than the original second-last episode on TV.
@jasonisrobin234 Aoba's always felt like a cheat to me... everyone else got some meaning to their Instrumentality except him... perhaps they wanted to show someone not accepting it, but with "Rei's" power at that point, anything was possible. I really think they couldn't think of anything that wouldn't just create needless questions, hence he gets a gang of Naked Rei's. :)
For some reason, Maya's tangification gets me teary eyed *every* time. Misato's does too, but even though Maya's a minor supporting character the scene with her and Ritsuko/Rei-tachi I find to be really emotional.
NGE was one massive brainfart but by god you know how to somehow string a fuck load of imagery and symbolism and somehow, create a cinematic experience that ranges between fucked up and genius
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Everyone knows that Evangelion was created for the soul purpose of advertisement. How else could you explain the reoccuring appearances of such companies as the delivery service, the beer, and this fine example of Tang (R).
Shinji (Lilith) was united with the MP Evas (Adam) and became the Tree of Life, which is 1/2 God. Meanwhile, down in Nerv, Rei (Lilith) merged with Gendo's hand (Adam) and also became 1/2 God. Finally, God generated an Anti-AT Field, and since the AT Field is based on the ego, everybody's wish was granted (for example, Gendo meeting Yui, which is his greatest desire). Because desire is fulfilled, everybody dies and turns into Tang. All of this while the crew plays unfitting music.
Lilith + Adam = God. It is pretty obvious due to the largest desires of mankind being fulfilled through the shapeshifting Reis. Lilith possesed the Fruit of Knowledge (matter) while Adam possessed the Fruit of Life (S2 Engine, infinite power) and if you have the knowledge on how to use your infinite energy, you are virtually omnipotent. The reason I considered them 1/2 Gods is because both Lilith and Adam were seperated into two parts (Lilith- Rei and Eva-01, Adam- Gendo and MP Evas)
The biggest question I have about this part is when Gendo gets eaten by unit 01, did that actually happen? Because we all know the Eva unit 01 is in space at that time, so was that part purely symbolic or something? But if so, why can we still see his lower body standing in the background?
I believe its more symbolic. Personally. I'm still trying to interpret this for myself. But you know, it's a story of the maturing of some of the characters (i think)
I saw this before I had watched the whole series, and I think it does make a certain amount of sense... but it's sufficiently disturbing to distract you from its meaning D:
@AmonDevilman the silence means when shinji ask that question that always been troubling him and his mind" Is it ok if I stay" rey did not give him answer (silence)
@AmonDevilman That's just a mistake in the subtitles. The white kanji on the black screen prior to Shinji screaming read "Silence." It's the response to Shinji's question, "Is it OK if I stay?" In other words: He has to make his own decision regarding whether his life is worth living, rather than looking to others for validation.
The preceding sentence is pretty much the meaning of Evangelion in a nut shell.
I thought The End of Evangelion was very easy to understand. You just had to think a little out of the box. I don't think they should change it in anyway, but I am sure I am in the minority with this opinion.
I thought so too. I saw it the first time when I was in the 7th grade. I thought I had the ending figured out, but as I grew older, I saw something new in it the more I thought about it. I'm 21 now, and I still think about Evangelion and how it has affected my life.
The sad thing is I saw The End of Evangelion before I saw the series. Even as I first watched I saw how glorious and intricate the story was. I re-watched it after I saw the series and everything just slid into place. It truly is a work of art.
God I love Evangelion. If you don't get it, do some reading and watch it with a more open mind... try and understand what happens in the final two anime episodes. They suck but once it makes sense it feels incredible. Its such a great story and its so much more than Shinji just being whiny about shit. Like actually if you are confused about anything here just comment and I'll explain
@togurotoguro Lol if you're talking about how Asuka says "how disgusting" at the end, that's all up to the viewer. It was suggested, but that doesn't mean it happened. Its just one of those "decide for yourself" things.
@sks2795 What exactly did you want to know? I can explain all that I can, but you should know that there are many questions that I cannot answer as it was Hideaki Anno's (the series creator) intention to leave many questions ambiguous.
Hideaki Anno directed EVA and based many of the themes on his personal life. It was.......as many people put it a "mindfuck" and was extremely confusing and incomplete to some. THEREFORE!!!!!!!! In 2007 they started "Rebuild of Evangelion" which wil consist of 4 movies and hopefully will end this series. I REALLY WANT MY CLOSURE!!!!!! IT GAVE ME A FREAKIN HEADACHE WHEN I SAW IT FER THE FIRST TIME!!!!!!!! (I had to watch it three times to finally understand anything) Yeesh i knw, I is stupid
Well, I watched the series, and the first movie, and this, and I still don't get it. I see people bringing their own interpretations to the table, but I don't see any reason to believe them. I too hope the Rebuild will make more sense--End of Evangelion was a step in that direction compared to Death and Rebirth--but I'm not counting on it.
The first movie was a recap of the series and the first part to the End of Evangelion. That aside, this series has one centralized series of events but many interpretations of not only symbolism, but morals as well. This series wasn't hard to understand. This is something you have to watch more than once to get everything you can out of it.
lilith/adam opened Anti AT Field causing everyone's AT Field to deactivate which takes away human's ability to maintain their forms..turning into LCL.
As many times as I try to watch this movie I still am confused. Shinji has self pity through the whole thing. Domestic abuse right from the get go! Children draws from someone who obviously will grow up and kill someone. People are blowing up into orange juice. Someone is ate in half yet the glasses make it threw some how. Mass suicides with a cheery song. I think im feeling a bit fawked up after watching this.
Certainly, a confusing ending— but instead I try to understanding like how it'd be getting into drepresants hearts (showed up not only through Shinji, but in all the characters and the whole world indeed).
Finally all those drawings, images and words are no more than personal symbols of death and abandonment (present in all characters, even in Hideaki Anno himself).
I think that pretty much the whole movie is one of the most emotionally moving movies. If you've watched the series and understand what's going one there's no way it doesn't make you feel something. After I watched it the first time I felt depressed the whole day. I had never experienced that at the time and it made me a fan.
Ok, this may sound super stupid. but a LONG time ago someone showed me an episode of Evangelion and they showed me some guy sticking his hand in some chicks boob and then feeling her up from the inside??? Anyone know what I'm talking about? PLEASE TELL ME WHAT IT IS AND WHERE TO FIND IT! I WANT TO SHOW IT TO SOMEONE!
Remember that NGE is considered one of today's epics and a landmark of asian television and a landmark on brilliant writing and EXTREMELY well hidden metaphors such as the epic "The Illiad" was written. It is one of the many shows which prove how far one can go with a simple television series if their is no holds bar on the content. Other epics such as this one are Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the shell movie, Trigun, MARCO, FLCL, Revolutionary girl utena, and Haibane Renmei.
This is so fucking ironic it makes the already saddening NGE, a soul-haunting experience, and a marvelous one. So sad they only put out crappy childish fan-service animes nowadays.

2012. That's when the instrumentality project will be unleashed and we will all be turned to goo.

At 2:53.
I laugh so hard.
That guy didn't actually believe in anything, so what does GNR do? Send a bunch of nude fourteen years old that what!
But at 3:14...I felt happy? Maya got to see who she loved the most, actually this is a pretty good ending, the world is at peace.
jasonisrobin234 1 year ago
@jasonisrobin234 Aoba's always felt like a cheat to me... everyone else got some meaning to their Instrumentality except him... perhaps they wanted to show someone not accepting it, but with "Rei's" power at that point, anything was possible. I really think they couldn't think of anything that wouldn't just create needless questions, hence he gets a gang of Naked Rei's. :)
BanjoOz 1 year ago
@BanjoOz The reason Aoba got a more horrific death was because he was a nihilist/ Atheist he didnt really have anyone to care for

this is my first time seeing this part. I was stunned and could only think, "What the hell?" And I still like it...

Everyone hugs and gets turned into Tang: the end.
Zeptis1337 1 year ago
God I love this movie so much.
For some reason, Maya's tangification gets me teary eyed *every* time. Misato's does too, but even though Maya's a minor supporting character the scene with her and Ritsuko/Rei-tachi I find to be really emotional.

Goddamn Anno
NGE was one massive brainfart but by god you know how to somehow string a fuck load of imagery and symbolism and somehow, create a cinematic experience that ranges between fucked up and genius
Isikien 1 year ago
I love to play this at an anime convention to see if would get a reaction out of anyone.
EHH246 1 year ago 5
The first time I saw this I was was horrified beyond all reason. The second time I started to see some symbolism (key word "started")
I'm going to go think about this... maybe the third time I'll be able to get past the shock of it all enough to analyze it.
But it's still Epic.

Everyone knows that Evangelion was created for the soul purpose of advertisement. How else could you explain the reoccuring appearances of such companies as the delivery service, the beer, and this fine example of Tang (R).

Into TANG ! XD
yeah I loved it too, as i loved how other people came to ''fetch'' everybody.
WeeorQueen 1 year ago 3
I loved it on how everybody turns into Tang while playing unfitting music, which means, everybody dies and goes to Heaven.
TheUnknownPerson1100 1 year ago 5
Shinji (Lilith) was united with the MP Evas (Adam) and became the Tree of Life, which is 1/2 God. Meanwhile, down in Nerv, Rei (Lilith) merged with Gendo's hand (Adam) and also became 1/2 God. Finally, God generated an Anti-AT Field, and since the AT Field is based on the ego, everybody's wish was granted (for example, Gendo meeting Yui, which is his greatest desire). Because desire is fulfilled, everybody dies and turns into Tang. All of this while the crew plays unfitting music.
TheUnknownPerson1100 1 year ago 10
why is Lilith + Adam = 1/2 God? :-/
UMosNyu 1 year ago
Lilith + Adam = God. It is pretty obvious due to the largest desires of mankind being fulfilled through the shapeshifting Reis. Lilith possesed the Fruit of Knowledge (matter) while Adam possessed the Fruit of Life (S2 Engine, infinite power) and if you have the knowledge on how to use your infinite energy, you are virtually omnipotent. The reason I considered them 1/2 Gods is because both Lilith and Adam were seperated into two parts (Lilith- Rei and Eva-01, Adam- Gendo and MP Evas)
TheUnknownPerson1100 1 year ago 4
so if everyone dies, then how are shinji and asuka still alive? Or did they reverse the effect?

again, this's just a theory but i think that they're left behind to repopulate the earth as adam and eve

@Gnarkade Well, wouldn't that lead to incest REALLY quizkly?
Vadergeek 1 year ago
The biggest question I have about this part is when Gendo gets eaten by unit 01, did that actually happen? Because we all know the Eva unit 01 is in space at that time, so was that part purely symbolic or something? But if so, why can we still see his lower body standing in the background?
DrNightbringer 2 years ago
I believe its more symbolic. Personally. I'm still trying to interpret this for myself. But you know, it's a story of the maturing of some of the characters (i think)

I saw this before I had watched the whole series, and I think it does make a certain amount of sense... but it's sufficiently disturbing to distract you from its meaning D:

You know what is funny? The subtitles when Shinji screams are saying "silence"!
AmonDevilman 2 years ago 31
subs were not timed correctly... i guess. But that's still funny.
animegen00 2 years ago
@AmonDevilman the silence means when shinji ask that question that always been troubling him and his mind" Is it ok if I stay" rey did not give him answer (silence)
m4mastery 1 year ago
@AmonDevilman That's just a mistake in the subtitles. The white kanji on the black screen prior to Shinji screaming read "Silence." It's the response to Shinji's question, "Is it OK if I stay?" In other words: He has to make his own decision regarding whether his life is worth living, rather than looking to others for validation.

The preceding sentence is pretty much the meaning of Evangelion in a nut shell.
spica2501 1 year ago
I thought The End of Evangelion was very easy to understand. You just had to think a little out of the box. I don't think they should change it in anyway, but I am sure I am in the minority with this opinion.
Aoikaoru4 2 years ago 6
I thought so too. I saw it the first time when I was in the 7th grade. I thought I had the ending figured out, but as I grew older, I saw something new in it the more I thought about it. I'm 21 now, and I still think about Evangelion and how it has affected my life.
IconOfSin88 2 years ago
This is one of teh few series around built around philosophies. This ending was very simple to understand but had a very deep meaning to it.
Just live life as you can. You need to enjoy it and find the simpler things. You must be able to share it however with other people to achieve it.
Still one of my favorite series
auron508 2 years ago
The sad thing is I saw The End of Evangelion before I saw the series. Even as I first watched I saw how glorious and intricate the story was. I re-watched it after I saw the series and everything just slid into place. It truly is a work of art.

holy fuck. Intense
God I love Evangelion. If you don't get it, do some reading and watch it with a more open mind... try and understand what happens in the final two anime episodes. They suck but once it makes sense it feels incredible. Its such a great story and its so much more than Shinji just being whiny about shit. Like actually if you are confused about anything here just comment and I'll explain

sks2795 1 year ago
@sks2795 What exactly did you want to know? I can explain all that I can, but you should know that there are many questions that I cannot answer as it was Hideaki Anno's (the series creator) intention to leave many questions ambiguous.
Haseo190 1 year ago
StuffIsCool3blah 2 years ago
Well, I watched the series, and the first movie, and this, and I still don't get it. I see people bringing their own interpretations to the table, but I don't see any reason to believe them. I too hope the Rebuild will make more sense--End of Evangelion was a step in that direction compared to Death and Rebirth--but I'm not counting on it.

Explain love?
Dont think what are you watching... feel it, like a poem, like a paint.
DeMelkFilms 2 years ago
The first movie was a recap of the series and the first part to the End of Evangelion. That aside, this series has one centralized series of events but many interpretations of not only symbolism, but morals as well. This series wasn't hard to understand. This is something you have to watch more than once to get everything you can out of it.

maybe this is going on in shinji's head? and because of his selfishness, everyone in his version of the world dies...?
Sanisaninja 2 years ago
As many times as I try to watch this movie I still am confused. Shinji has self pity through the whole thing. Domestic abuse right from the get go! Children draws from someone who obviously will grow up and kill someone. People are blowing up into orange juice. Someone is ate in half yet the glasses make it threw some how. Mass suicides with a cheery song. I think im feeling a bit fawked up after watching this.
DarkHotRodXxX 2 years ago
Certainly, a confusing ending— but instead I try to understanding like how it'd be getting into drepresants hearts (showed up not only through Shinji, but in all the characters and the whole world indeed).
Finally all those drawings, images and words are no more than personal symbols of death and abandonment (present in all characters, even in Hideaki Anno himself).
totopotrillo 2 years ago 2
I think that pretty much the whole movie is one of the most emotionally moving movies. If you've watched the series and understand what's going one there's no way it doesn't make you feel something. After I watched it the first time I felt depressed the whole day. I had never experienced that at the time and it made me a fan.
