'And it went wherever I did go'. So Terry Jones had either carried it and has lost it/ put it somewhere or he has eaten it. The fact that he has whiskers painted on suggests that he is meant to be cat-like and a cat, of course, would eat a fish. So I think that Terry Jones ate it but I wonder why he wonders where it went. But the point of it surely is that you can never be sure of the where and the why.
@Motorskallen Analytical skills and imagination. Some people might think I looked in to it too deeply but the Pythons were/are extraordinarily intelligent and fearless about displaying their intellect compared to most comedians so the potential depth of their references cannot be underestimated.
@Picnicl come on, it's Monthy Python. Not Sigmund Freud or a painting by Dalí. I admit that this particular scetch is a bit weird, but it's still suppose to be funny.
@Motorskallen There's no point in us arguing but comedy does sometimes try to achieve that kind of Dali-like artiness and I think that the Pythons did it on occasion. If you're familiar with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer you will see that devotion to surrealness in some of their work too. Just because it's comedy and is veyr funny doesn't mean that it doesn't deserve to be spoken of seriously. Comedy's a serious business for the very best comics.
@Motorskallen Analytical skills & imagination. Some people might think I looked in to it too deeply but the Pythons were/are extraordinarily intelligent and fearless about displaying their intellect so the potential depth of their references cannot be underestimated.I just want to add that none of the Pythons were frequent drug users. Some may never have taken drugs. Drugs would have been contrary to their logical frame of mind - they were like the modern day equivalent of Lewis Carroll.
locker. Is the locker supposed to be 'the cupboard'? Is it in there? All he says is 'wouldn't you like to know'. Then another waiter comes along and, at the same time, a man on the right back moves something around . 'It's gone under the sofa' says a voice. A voice says something about one of the drawers in the bureau. More smoke. The elephant waiter raises his trunk to the edge of the frame, some thing about vichysoise and 'it's hidden in ... trousers'. A fruitless treasure hunt of the absurd.
Terry Jones immediately puts his left arm down and points away with his right as if he has either just managed to pick up and move the fish himself or as if that happened earlier. The orange theme is continued in Chapman's gloves. And all kinds of things act as distractions - the perspective , the people on the right, the objects and a locker with a slight amount of steam coming from it. 'Yes it's in the cupboard' say the voices in the background and then a large amount of steam emits from the
It really does make you think and one of the mysteries of it is whether any of it was designed as a deliberate red herring. You see, it's bizarre and yet it wouldn't be quite as bizarre if it was completely bizarre. So it's set in a rather solid looking old English house. It's a bit Rocky Horror Picture Show actually. When you look at the fireplace, the burning embers look a bit like a goldfish. To complicate matters further, you see one of Terry Jones's shoes and it's orange like a goldfish.
@avalanchesuperstar I was making fun of GAGA not Graham. Get a sense of humor that extends beyond the 80s. I was watching this shit on MTV with the young ones before GAGA was even on the map. So BUGGER OFF!!!
@w1ck3dz0d1ac To be fair, this is the internet and all sarcasm is lost through such comments, especially with no knowledge as to the original poster's age or interests. To assume that it was a real question was fair, and to be offended by someone belittling a fantastic man like Graham like so .... seems reasonable to me. Graham looks way better in a corset and stockings!
how the hell is the lady gaga comment the highest rated comment? wtf, that has nothing to do with monty python, and this movie was made about 3 decades before she was even around
I first watched this sober, at home, after my parents had left for church. I had to sneak behind their backs if I wanted to watch anything like this. When I saw this scene I broke out laughing and rewatched it a good 20 times. Monty Python, you are the best thing to ever happen to me.
This is best experienced when on LSD, as most things are. I believe that was the purpose of this scene as most people who went to see this film in the theaters in the early 70s were whacked out of their minds.
@stimpp no, not everyone in the seventies was high, nor does this make any more sense when you're high. Monty python is quite enjoyable without foreign substance..
@stimpp The people who went to see this film in the early 70s? They truly MUST have been "whacked out of their minds", considering the fact it was made in 1983!
Only an American could come up with such a moronic comment. And its all well and good to say England lost its good men in the war, after all the US was sitting on their asses for the majority of it. British comedy is far to complex for the simple minded american, perhaps they should add in a toilet flushing. add to that fat slob drinking a beer and insulting his wife, as he farts.
@zaq4267 You must learn to understand the difference between their, there and they're. You must also understand that you only use one comma, and then put a space after it. That space can not be replaced by another comma. You must also, also understand that ol' is an abbreviation of old, and seeing as the 'd' is missing, you must put an apostrophe after the 'l' to show that.
I could go on about how stupid Americans are, but i have no proof that you're American. I'll just end by saying fuck you.
Thank you so much for posting this. I pee myself a bit everytime I watch it (LOL!) - but, can't for the life of me figure out why!!! This routine has stayed in my memory banks since I first saw it as a child. I've tried to reinact it to others but get nothing except blank stares, and "Gee, I guess you had to be there" responses. Surrealistic, "Theater of the Absurd" at its best. Maybe we just all share a common "whacked-out" gene. If so, we all need to connect in "whacky land".
This bit always made me laugh without knowing what it's all about. It might just be pure brilliant nonsense. BTW, Chapman must have got that look from Daryl Hannah in Blade Runner.
What made this so funny was the look on my straight laced friend I dragged to this movie back then... This scene as weird as it is, is priceless! The sex ed and the sperm is sacred, Eric Idle as a waiter bringing you out to a field and then saying "well.. fuck you!".... watching the reaction of disgust on my friends face made me crack up even more!
I love the double entendre' of the faucet nipples!!Water is life to fish as Mother's milk ,from the tit,is life to nursing mammals. The sub-mariner dutifully at his post,on the right cracks me up too.The cocktail wielding butler is the "elephant in the room " for me.Any clues on his significance? The comments hurled from the audience, eeeerrrr fishtank are AWESOME!!!Python FOREVER!!
When I saw the fingers move I was a bit taken back, very cool illusion. I've seen toys for kids, like, Terminator looking robot gloves with independently movable fingers. Those toy things use mini pulleys and cables that have pull-rings for each of the fingers. It could be something like that used here.
I watched this film first on shrooms, and couldn't decide whether any of this was real or hallucination. Watched it again, stoned, and almost cried. WTF is that elephant????
OMG this is 10x funnier after watching a video for my art class of this weird interpretive movement stuff...its seriously more ridiculous than this and ppl make a living off of it
everytime I see this part of The Meaning of Life I think about the naughty chemists sketch in MPFC where Michael Palin says to Eric Idle "...a fish requisit-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t"
I love Graham in this, and Terry... wow, they're at their craziest :))))
You cant just watch only this video to understand the humor of Monty Python. They healed the world with their material and this tiny little excerpt from Meaning of Life is just a fraction of the humour from the video. I highly recommend everyone watches it.
Acturally... No, not really. The point of this skit was to not make even the slightest amount of sense. The Pythons have admitted that it is one of the most non-sensical things they ever wrote.
The joke is that there is not joke. The point is that there is no point. It is hilarious because it isn't the least bit funny.
thumbs up if this is your favrite clip.

everytime I see this part of The Meaning of Life I think about the naughty chemists sketch in MPFC where Michael Palin says to Eric Idle "...a fish requisit-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t"
