  • Wow, I hope I can play something like that by highs school! I'm a flautist, and I am already playing a few college level things, even though I will be going into 8th grade in August. Also, if anyone could give me a few pointers to make playing tenor sax a little easier that would be nice.

  • Thanks so much for sharing this video. I have a question: I have learning disability and ADD, but I am also in love with music. I was wondering if it is too complicated to learn flute (or piccolo), and if there is any way to help people with any kind of dissability to learn easier. Because of my situation it might take more than usual to remember the fingering and so.

And also which one is less complicated between treble flute or piccolo.

    Thanks for your time

  • @nrc1977 Practice as much as you possibly can. Take some Ritalin and practice your tuckus off for as long as the medication works. That's the best advise I can really think of. Just try, don't let yourself get distracted. I know it probably seems impossible, but if you can find a half-dozen friends to play with and keep you on track, it'll do something for you at least. Try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try! That's my advise to you. Do the best you can with what you've got.

  • Don't like how he plays

  • He's saying wierd time signatures I've never heard of are they hard to learn

  • It doesn't look like he looks after the headjoint on his flute!!!!!! Great playing though!

  • Hi, I'm from Costa Rica and I have a question I will play a flute in my school but the problem is that it does not sound any note I can do. I need help.

I have been learning for 3 months and does not sound any note.

  • fff does Not mean tripple forte it means... fortississimo

  • @nuke585

    isn't it forte fortissimo?

  • Sorry but, no.

  • It does. Both ways are correct :]

FFFForte Fortissimo (music; as loud as can be played)

    FFFFortisissimo (music)

Must be from different parts of the world!

  • @nuke585 Triple-forte is easier to say.

  • @nuke585 But that IS triple forte

  • We say bar in America.

  • @mac112man

Not everywhere, here in Michigan, we call them measures

  • Well, I guess it depends on the band director and what-not. I live in Los Angeles and we use the terms interchangeably. No big deal anyways.

  • He might be one of the best ive ever, but why does it look like hes on LSD.

  • @wilbunk123 Cuz lucy is flying in the sky, wearing diamonds!

  • me too

  • i play the flute 2

  • Thank you very much for the nice and very sympathetic video!!

  • so i'm guessing the English says Bar instead of measure?

  • it's not just the english...

  • My school uses Bar too,, and we're in Canada

  • thats a horrible sounding flute and it looks like something he found on the street

  • Yeah, it doesn't sound very good at all.. The tone is actually kind of horrible... :(

  • most professionals have a flute for practice, and a flute for performance....doesn't he sound like James Galway?

  • No he dosent sound like james galway in any way and sure i have several flutes but theres all decent and clean

  • Looks like it's an older instrument by the look of its mechanism and the recording is not all that great.

  • hi,im kinda sad to think i've started late in playing the flute, i would love to play fast passages but i'm 46 years old.what are my chances or up to what extent can i play the fulte ?I feel hopeless in this area.

  • it depends on how much you practice! it might be harder since you're older (i feel ya on that one, haha) but if you work hard you will for sure be able to play fast passages!

  • June, I made the same question myself (I`m thirty and I`ve started playing flute a month ago) and as I love and enjoy practising I have made much progress. It only depends on how much you practise and how responsibly you are.

  • Actually what i wanted was just to play a simple piece, for family gatherings etc. it's happening now Audrey ,tnx

  • Keep up the good work, dude...eventually you will be able to play fast passages, once you believe in yourself. Also, learning an instrument, in your older years, actually slows the loss of memory, if not eliminating it. So have faith in your abilities, PRACTICE REGULARLY, and you should be alright. Btw, your chances are as good as any young person, just be persistent, because your good attitude to learning will help as well.

  • tnx for the push, : )

  • just again to point out language by continent, he even pointed out the usage of bar v. measure... like triple forte v. fortissisimo... and quavers v. quarter notes ... in america v england... even though im in america and use triple forte

  • This is my second year playing flute and I never really thought when I started playing that someone could be that good and go so fast. How is it possible too move your fingers that fast?

  • You train your fingers. Just learn the part and start very slow. And up your tempo little by little each time but make sure you're near perfection at each tempo before raising the tempo.

  • does he have a c foot or a b foot

  • he has a c-foot joint

  • It's my fourth year playing the flute, and i love how you give the tips on dynamics, accents, ect. it's very helpful!! the piece.. looks challenging! BEST FLUTE PLAYER I'VE EVER SEEN!

  • Just a question, doesn't fff = fortissisimo?

  • No. f=forte; ff=fortissimo

  • fff stands for "più che fortissimo" in Italian. More than very loud.

  • what Grade is that piece?

  • About 4-ish.

    I'm assuming.

  • i think it could be a grade 6, they are in a orchrestra

  • grade 7 I think, but that breathing at 2nd page is like crazy.

  • Hey, it only goes to grade 6!!! But it does look hard.

  • u r rite!

  • This guy should be a comedian. Awesome, awesome, awesome.

  • im 11 and in sixth grade and i really want to do this. hopefully they will do this again in three years. and i dont understand how to play the very begining thats sounds awsome in measure 5. someone help me.

  • I have been playing the flute for 9 years, but since I am putting myself through college I haven't had time to perform in two years. I am going to try for this...my high reg. is still fine...my sustain isn't as great...and I have no clue what to do for my second piece (I didn't know we had to do one until right now!) Wish me luck!

    I am going for this.

  • Hmm, I've only been playing for about a year. I think if I had found this contest a month or so ago I would have time enough to practice. I wonder if they're going to do this again.

  • Wow, if he had like a Masterclass that lasted around three hours, I would totally go to it. I went to a James G Masterclass, and left midway through-waaay too boring. Love ya, Gareth Davies!

  • This video seems to suggest that you can play any piece that you want to as your audition piece whereas the competition rules refer to a list of audition pieces that you can choose from.

Which is correct, and if there is a list where can i find it?

  • So, far Carngegie Hall, do we just submit one solo piece, or one solo piece AND the Eroica?...Can you only get into Carnegie by making the Eroica symphony orchestra??

  • You submit a solo piece and Eroica in two different videos.

  • great! I hope it's not too late for me to learn this piece (and brush up on my Mozart Concerto in D) for January 28th. I'm totally going for it!

  • hes such a londoner hehe

  • :'( i need in spanish i can't understand this!! :'(

  • Hehe ur way better then me on my flute lol

  • Wow a lot of these "LSO masterclasses" have the same Balinese gamelan in the background. Awesome!

  • Umm for what ever reason I can not get sound on this video.. What is going on?

  • Try to increase the volume

  • same here, i need my peice, can someone help me?

  • Can someone give me a link to the Brahms and Mendelsons piece. I can't find my copies.

  • is there a problem if im 16? and i wanna upload some videos???

  • im 13..and it is for all ages. everyone told me i should do it..so should you!! what do u have to loose?

  • heh .. well yea thanx cuz im kinda sceptic but ok ..

    u play any instrument?

  • I just checked the rules, it's 14 or older, sorry.

  • you should play it anyways for fun or practice.

  • me 2. im 13, 7 grade, i really wanna do this ut i need help finding the peice

  • What you do is go to the symphony's channel and you can download the piece

  • wow. impressive. How old were you when you started?

  • wow! You are so amazing!! I'm terrible at playing the flute, this is only my 5th year as a flautist. However, the level you are at is what I will try for in some more years.

It is pretty difficult to play the flute well when your teacher for the past 3 years, cannot teach! But I will definately stick with it.

  • (Follow up post)

I hope these issues are resolved with haste, especially the tuning...

Anyways, when do you plan to submit your video? :)

  • My flute needs quite a bit of work right now, so I'm taking it in to the shop tomorrow, and I should have it back in time to submit my videos sometime within the second or third week in January.

  • Interesting... None of the links except "block" and "add as a friend" works for me. Maybe browser related... I will try with a firefox as soon as possible.

I've also posted similar messages on the violin I & II masterclass videos (and continue to do so when I have more time) but didn't get any responses yet. However another woodwind section (couldn't remeber which now) was debating over a similar problem as far as I remember.

  • Oh an another inconsistency...

What should be the general tuning? A=440 or A=442?

Recent orchestras tend to tune for A=442, and sometimes even higher... But here, tuning is not mentioned in any text or partition and should be cleared.

I'm sure the tech guys could fix "2 Hertz" with a software such as Protools or Cubase easily but it wouldn't be professional, as this project seems.

Wanna accomplish a quality job, then do it right...

  • I listened to London SO version, it's 442 I think. But it is understood that we normally should play 440 if not otherwise been asked to change, I don't see a 442 on score, so I will assume it's 440

  • Ooh! this is good. I'm gonna give it a go.

  • hi i just wanted to know if any of u flutists has the music sheet for Mozart Flute Concerto in D Major plz, ive been trying to get it but its been imposible.... if someone has it plz wwrite to me ill rly appreciate it... my mail is lchgmabc@hotmail ok? thank you very much!! and i cant wait to play this EROICA !!!! i just love it.!

  • I think there is a problem in the flute partition present at the youtube sympohny channel for download, involving measures 16 to 21.

According to the conductors score flutes have the solo melody after the trumpets starting at measure 16 until measure 21, but there is an 18 measures of rest in the flute partiton.

Also Tan Dun clearly gestures for flutes to start playing with a crescendo on measure 16 at the practice video. My mistake? If not, it shoud be corrected urgently...

  • Ah, I was wondering why he seems to cue the flutes at that point in the video, but you're right, there is a flute melody in the score.

It's either a mistake on the flute part or on the full score, but in my opinion it's probably best to go with what's on the part, and if it was their mistake then I don't think they'll hold it against anyone.

  • Well, since he cues the flutes and if you listen close, they seem to be playing there. I think this is a mistake on the flute part.

I agree they won't hold this against anyone however to maintain the right balance, my opinion is that it's better to fix the partition and play according to the conductors score. Moreover, for those measures, conductors score indicates as "a2" meaning both 1st and 2nd flutes should play... Anyway, I'm sure they'd appreciate it :)

  • Yeah you're probably right, it isn't exactly difficult to add those few measures to the part anyway.

I also thought about the tuning for this, they should probably mention what the tuning should be, or they're going to get quite a mix of intonation from the videos.

  • So, is there any way to reach the "officials" and mention abiout these? Or maybe hopefully but with very little chance though, they are monitoring these posts...

I couldn't find any email addresse or link, except of these masterclass videos. The "message user" links are disabled at the youtube symphony channel)

By the way, I wonder if there is any online community formed by us the flautist; to share thoughts & discuss any difficulites we are having, for this Internet Symphony "Eroica"?

  • I haven't tried to send a message, but when you click on the "Send Message" link under "Contact symphony," it does come up with the message template, so are you sure the links are disabled? Also, I wonder if any of the other instruments are dealing with these issues.

  • I believe Tan Dun is cueing for all woodwind instruments, not just the flute.

  • madsheep8, don't be mad, it's not a misprint on flute score, if you look at OBOE's score, it is oboe's solo, I think Tan Dun probably changed the score and cut out the flute solo parts and gave it to oboe, may be he thinks the flute is too loud, or covering the oboe sound etc.

  • I meant bar 16-21.

  • I can't tongue that good. im trying but not used to it

  • Psh. This is so ridiculously easy,I love it. :]

  • ive been playing flute for almost 13 years! and can't wait to play this

  • fk, i have like 3 yrs of flute....neva gon make it =.=

  • I'm sorta torn, I am a piccolo player, but also a flautist. I am at amus level (got an a im my 8th grade exam) and was just wondering if I could have some advice on which I would have a better chance in.

  • in measure 82, I heard him play G natural. Aren't you supposed to play G Sharp?

  • um when he played the measure 82 where 7/16 is, didn't he play G natural instead of G sharp?

  • This video I agree is quite confusing, I was going to do one of the standard three they listed but now I can do anything?! I mightaswell just do the flute beatbox modern I just learned : P

  • Wait, I'm a bit confused. Are we allowed to pick our own song for the second video? Or are we supposed to pick from the list? He said we can pick what we want, but sill, I'm confused.

  • the only part that is hard for me is starting at measure 62. i have good articulation, but im afraid that i will loose count or something. you see, i have only been playing for 3-4 years, and im only 13. i am one of the top in my class, and our band is one of the best in our state. should i still audition?

  • of course you should! this a great opportunity. either you get picked or you don't. it beats auditioning in person.

  • DEFINATLY! you've got nothing to lose, so why not try? go for it! :)

  • nice nice tips!! lovely Gareth

  • omg thats helps alot!!

  • Great tips! I didn't know anything about a second piece though. Ill try the fute concerto

  • awesome stuff! it's really gonna help me nail this piece for the auditions. great flute playing as well! one thing though, we chose what we play for the second piece? i thought there was a list. what's the case there?

  • Hmm he gives the impression that the second piece is free choice. I thought there were only 3 choices.

  • hmm......I agree.....this is kinda' confusing......will the performance be solo with the orchestra or is it as part of the orchestra? I don't get it

  • great playing and the masterclass's great, but you have to agree that the piece is kind of dumb....piccolo+flute doubling all the melodies? the same melody that repeats 20 times?.....

also, the performance in Carnegie Hall would be just 4 minutes? .........

  • i hope they smack us with a few more pieces so we have a full concert set.

  • you don't get it do you? it's a chance to show how devoted people really are to music, and if you've noticed somethings about music being composed for high skilled concerts, it's not always gonna be super interesting, but it's skillful and challenging. that's the real point of this

  • the piece is written in an obscure key, with absolutely HORRIBLE orchestration. you should look at the masterclasses for cor anglais, french horn, and oboe, to name a few, where the LSO members pointed out the poor quality of the composition.

piccolo doubling EVERYTHING is perhaps one of the biggest sin you can do unto both the player and the integrity of the instrument. i agree that this is a great concept, and i will try to participate. this is just a comment, nothing personal.

  • I cant wait to try this! :D

  • GAH

I don't do exams, thank god.

    This makes me want to.

  • I'm going to audition...this helped alot ^_^

but wit hthe music do you play everything and if so what do you do in the rests?

  • i think you're supposed to count them to show you really know how to work on a piece. counting the rests gives you some discipline but also moreso shows that you know how to be fully ready for the real thing

  • WOW! that was amazing flute playing! i cant do running 32nd notes yet (16th notes aren't all that great either) but i guess practice makes perfect. I have a 32 measure solo in my schools upcoming concert...the first 16 i play completely alone, but i'll try my best to stay calm. I'll try to get me playing eroica up soon too. again, AMAZING flute playing

  • what a brilliant idea! and you are a great teacher. Our daughter is just about to take grade 4 flute at the age of 10 and you are a wonderful inspiration. Thanks! p.s. we love the LSO! good luck
