I usually don't get emotional easily, sure I feel great empathy for other peoples losses but I leave it behind fastly. But this tragedy is just emotional for me, I've been to Roskilde three times, and I went there for the same reasons as those 9 people who died, to get away from worries, meet new people, see great bands perform, and just experience the MAGIC that is Roskilde, and their great time ended like this. It's 10 years away now, and Roskilde still mourns and always will!
It's so unfair that those people at Roskilde lost their lifes while one of the greatest bands of the world where performing... I'm a dane and I am pissed off by it! I'm also angry that the fact is... If I want to hear those guys live, I have to choose between England, Germany, Sweden and Norway! :c
that just choked me up.... I think all of us send our best wishes as Pearl Jam fans. I'm sure that the band will make sure this never happens again, they actually care about us bein safe. My condolences to all the families of those fans that died...
I was there at Roskilde that day and right in the "dead zone" - scariest day of my life !!. Pearl Jam were and have been fantastic. They are legends and I hope they have been able to get some relief from this over the years as they took it harder than anyone.
I think Pearl Jam took the accident too hard on their shoulders.
I was not there, but I cannot see how it could have been Pearl Jam's fault. But then again, maybe fault hasn't got anything to do with Pearl Jam's reaction after the tragedy.
i was there in 1999 up front when metallica played, and was not that surprised that lives was lost, because the preassure in front was just insane. i had to fight every second to be able to breathe. (and im not a small guy) worst concert experience ever. security changed dramaticly after 2000, so that something like this hopefully will never occur again.
Really nice of Eddie. But it wasent them who kield them, it was the 90.000 people behind them. And also, Roskilde as an organisation is not to be blame, you know when you go to a festival, it is not 100% safe. Been there 8 times, i know what i am talking about. Don't be blind.
I was also there. I was between two of the guys who got killed. We were hanging out together, and got pushed down together. I am scarred for life. I got up, but not them. Why me, god? why me?
The pressure alwayay comes from the middle. I stayed at the left and looked out at the sea , tapping my breath while a man helped me on my knees. Its the most terrible experience i´ve had in my whole life. Someone punched me with hes shoes. Me and my father only went donn to see pearl jam.. my lives has been destroyed since that. i´ve lived on mentalhospitals. I think you sholuld get this it NO BULLSHIT. This isa true depesting story.
I dont agree with nakieI, I was also there,in the front, and I was really "pushed" in front of the stage ( could´t breath). It was very scary No doubt that the security not was safe. I tattooed Pearl jams "Alive- man" that you can se on the front of the singel " Alive" - in memory to all of the people that died. I think of you guys.
Some stupid drunk Swedes were diving and jumping from the rails behind the front crowd and forward towards the stage. People couldn't see them and were hit in the back and fell forward with the divers on top. Those behind the ones who fell was pushed forward and stumbled in those on the ground,
Ed stopped the concert and got the crowd to move back so that the medics could get the wounded out. The band came back on and continued to play but aborted when it was known that someone had died.
Maybe this is what you experienced, but friends of the guy Eddie is talking about did indeed experience a huge push from the crwod behind. So much so that they were lifted above the floor a couple of centimeters. Ppl tried to get out through crowdsurfing, some didnt manage they fell...
the music industry has gotten so commercialized. it's terrible. any bands with potential are sucked in and turned into mainstream shit. the only bands that are amazing are ones that existed before that, usually ones that originated in the nineties. this decade i see no new promising talents arising. and the artists who ARE truly amazing aren't known because the focus is on those that sell out and the good artists don't sell out
@muskies216 Don't worry. Everyone who was born into or grew up with shit for music stopped buying shitty records, and started supporting underground music until it became popular. It has been this way since Blues, then into Jazz, then into Rock to Punk to Rap to Hip Hop then to Grunge, and bunch of other forms of music in-between. In other words, we all have to support the kind of music we like in the smaller clubs if we want them to make it out of those clubs, and onto the radio.
@muskies216 in all honesty i pay my respects..and i agree im 19..and music is horrible..i wish i was born to live and understand music in the 90s..not now..music is worse everyday..stay strong..music is still alive in our hearts and those who truly know it..well we will go far :))....Again my respects for those that died..<3
I wasn't there, but PJ fans are like family, and this video brought me to tears. I wish the absolute best for those family members trying to heal. They are in my prayers.
Seeing Jeff break down, I just wanted to give him a hug so bad. (Hugs to Jeff, and I'm sure the rest of the band was overcome as well, I just couldn't see them.)PJ, is awesome, hugs all around, fans: group hug.
Eddie was soooo devastated by this tragedy, whether you like or despise his views he wears his heart on his sleeve.People were clapping for the celebration of this persons life
Pearl jam started their show just as a couple of other bands finished theirs and in the resulting flood of people trying to get to see pearl jam, several people were crushed to death against the crowd barriers to the left of the stage.
This problem has been largely solved with better scheduling and a clever barrier system in front of the stage. There are several areas separated by crowd barriers and numbers of people in each one is strictly enforced so that over crowding does not happen.
I am so glad I went to my tent to get warmer clothes or else I would not have been here I think...cause I stood wree the ppl died just 15-20min before it happend....
When PJ started to play people pushed forward.Because there was no bar in between the front and back it was a huge disaster. People fell and were not able to get up. 9 Pearl Jam fans died. One of those Frank Nouwens. A young Dutch man who lost his life way too early. He was very cheerful person loving life according to his sister. She misses him tons, so does his friends and other relatives. I am sorry for all the people that lost their lives that day and their relatives.
Tragic so tragic, being a big fan of Pearl Jam I can tell you this affected the band so badly and very nearly came to calling it quits. They didn't thankfully but having said that they will always remember those that were lost at Roskilde inc Frank. If at all possible some good came from Roskilde as the band now ensure massive safety measures are in place for all their gigs even though they were not at fault. This was 1st introduced at Reading in 2006 I believe and continues now! RIP the 9.
and what happend was that it was rainy and sucky sounds that made the crowed move forward towards the stage and 9 people feld over and got killed by the crowed.
words cannot express how deeply felt this was. Ed was emotional playing the song after that, and during the speech if you could tell. I'm afraid to speculate but to me this looked like another step in the process for the band if you know what i mean. To have been there, to have stood, to have seen, ... such an honor.
You know, I loved this lot from the start-Ed has always been cool, but with time I think he's proved himself to be about the greatest 'ordinary' guy we've ever seen. He is amazing, and so 'normal'.I love the guy...and his feckin band.

we weren't overhere but a few years before Roskilde we almost got killed in the deathzone in the Rai,Amsterdam.
thousands and thousands of youth packed up without low barrierfences.
Mojo concertorganisation Netherlands sucks.
so we got about a little 10.000 people on our back pushing and screaming as hell.
in a few minutes we as front rows were back rows, and we got a blue dot on the arm like sheep.
2 blue dots for getting you out of the crowd and you got removed from the concert

i Know, its just sad and boring. Today all bands sound the same and there's pretty much nothing we can do about it. PEARL JAM ftw!!
Junix93 2 years ago 4
The thing is, back in the day (up until about the 70s) mainstream WAS the good music.
Mostly the only music really.
But now you've got two crowds: people that are bothered by musicians that copy allt eh same shit.
And people that know something about music and like to see new stuff.
Of course those categories are not strictly separated, I'm just saying...
