Engines are probably a copy of someone elses as the body is a P-3 Orion. The Japanese are not great inventors. They take Western technology and improve it. Asians are most definitely not innovators.
u r partially wrong, if u say china is the copycat of tech. ur right. but japan ? hell, the japanese IHI corporation is a part of general electric , and have jointly developed jet engines for decades, they have also developed domestic japanese aircraft based on their own tech. also look at the era of the pacific war, the jap. navy had a great variety of prop. fighters which are developed by kawasaki, mitsubishi etc. also japanese electronic industry is superior and famous around the world
This is my new favourite aircraft! It's so cute! I know that many armed forces around the world will be looking to replace their Orions, and I hope the Kawasaki gets marketed. I don't know much, anything really, about it's capabilities however, and it may suit Japan well, and so, say, Canada with rather larger distances to patrol. Well done though!
@joachim1066 Only if Japan drops this PC policy crap of not exporting arms overseas. Japan has long supported various US war efforts since the end of WWII in the form of money, manufacturing, land and labour.
This plane is the size of a 737. I wonder if they are going to make a civilian version. If they do, Japan will join the EU and US is making jet planes.
This plane is much smaller than a 737, in both length and width. Also, it is a very specific purpose-built aircraft, it will not become a civilian airliner.
Isnt bad to make your own aircraft when defense says, but this aircraft is ugly compared to the P3 or P8. Still, I dont know its performace, thats the real thing.
It has 4 engines for the sake of reliability. a twin engined aircraft would have been more fuel efficient, but less reliable and more prone to crash in the event of an air attack.
it's that mini A380 right?

One small correction, IHI is not a part of GE, but they do participate in some GE projects as a revenue and risk sharing partner.

I love the sound of those IHI F7 turbofans. Especially when four of them are roaring together!

learjet. Have not you watched a patrol plane? Should the patrol plane be similar form?

P-8 of US Navy developing it at present is a twin-engined plane.
It seems to have difficulty in the development even if it has the rich US Navy of the experience and Boeing and does.
Flight in low altitude, low speed in the jet plane of a twin-engined seems technically to be difficult.
Incidentally, Japan will adopt these 80 airplanes.

I think the idea is to shut down two engines in the cruise to extend patrol time - they do it with the P-3 Orion
theworacle 4 years ago
@theworacle But in a jet, it has huge drag since it is relatively bigger than turboprop and cannot be feathered.
I think reson is reliability to fly very long mission with full load and not being forced to drop anything if one engine fails.

Excuse the neophyte comment but is this plane not a bit small to necessitate 4 engines?
