Well, I don't know about the caveman bit, this is exactly how its done in traditional households in India. Except, they tap it all around with a big spoon *before* peeling the skin off. And they carve the skin to peel it off instead of cutting right through. Works quite nicely, IMO.

It would be more efficient if you cut the top off, reveal the chambers, cut along the chambers, then LIGHTLY hit the outter skin and let the seeds drop in a bowl. You won't end up with a bowl of juiceless seeds.

Sorry but your method is the old technique , You are suppose to get a large bowl and fill half of it with cold water and then do the de-seeding under water, The eatable seeds will sink to the bottom and the skin and other white stuff will float to the top which you can catch, use a colander to collect the seeds. This way you don't get any red stains splashes on your clothes or floor. I can do it in less than 4 minutes.
