it probably hit the ground too hard too fast,and didnt have time to stretch and reshape itself like it normaly does. so it probably became hard and rigid instead,like glass or a rock,and broke because of that. its the same with gum. if you pull it slowly it stretches but if you pull it too fast it snaps

When putty moves too fast, it gets less viscous and more solid-like. When it moves slowly it is liquid-like.

This is because when you have solid particles mixed in a liquid, like silly putty, when the solids move fast they create gaps that the liquids struggle to fill. when they dont fill fast enough, the material is more resistant to movement. So its like a solid, so putty shatters.

Silly Putty will stretch with normal force. A sudden jerking movement will make it snap. To try this out, get a ball of it and stretch it. The quickly pull it apart.
