They have it easy now...in '75 only two bldgs had had AC (NAVSECGRU - where I was, and the admin site); barracks were raised wood platforms with tin roofs...that was it...not to mention there were not WAVES there either...

I can't see Britain not renewing the agreement for the base in 2016. It's a great military asset and since we both are closely allied, we can both share the use and reap the benefits of it's position. About the population, they became British citizens and have claimed over £4 million so far and was resettled. They may or may not have wanted to leave and it's a shame. However, sometimes the security of Britain as a whole (including them) needs to take priority. They didn't get too bad a deal.

In the 1960s Britain ethnically cleans the island of its population forcibly removing its 2000 inhabitants to shanty towns in Mauritius (1200 miles away) without compensation leaving many to die or live in squalor. Then it leased the island to the US.
Compare that to how it defended its citizens of the Falkland islands in 1982.

Beutiful island we pulled in there off of west pack when I was on the USS Ranger in 92. Stayed four days and a great base. The British Royal Navy great people. Had a good time there .

I was there in 1980 and there was not much there. Several different commands and lots of sand crabs. There were several things you could do there eg. sleep, eat, exercise, drink and go to the beach. There was no women, one TV channel, one radio station, no telephone and a bunch of guys living in barracks and plywood huts. Compare that to now and it is a proverbial paradise. It was a long 12 months. I did learn to play raquetball so it was not a total loss.

Ive just googled WMD in Iraq and components of WMD found etc. on google - there were no results since 2006 i.e. the initial allegations. The United States didn't seize it and they didn't force those people off the island. They were gone before any Americans were even there. We've certainly been involved in our fiar share of shady goings on but Diego Garcia wasn't one of those. Again, do your homework.

I can't see Britain not renewing the agreement for the base in 2016. It's a great military asset and since we both are closely allied, we can both share the use and reap the benefits of it's position. About the population, they became British citizens and have claimed over £4 million so far and was resettled. They may or may not have wanted to leave and it's a shame. However, sometimes the security of Britain as a whole (including them) needs to take priority. They didn't get too bad a deal.

Beutiful island we pulled in there off of west pack when I was on the USS Ranger in 92. Stayed four days and a great base. The British Royal Navy great people. Had a good time there .

I was there in 1980 and there was not much there. Several different commands and lots of sand crabs. There were several things you could do there eg. sleep, eat, exercise, drink and go to the beach. There was no women, one TV channel, one radio station, no telephone and a bunch of guys living in barracks and plywood huts. Compare that to now and it is a proverbial paradise. It was a long 12 months. I did learn to play raquetball so it was not a total loss.

At this point, it's a joint base, U.K. and U.S., used for various operations, mostly just as a rest stop.
The U.S. had a tiny communications post there before the U.K. came in to clear it and lease it to the U.S.

Ive just googled WMD in Iraq and components of WMD found etc. on google - there were no results since 2006 i.e. the initial allegations. Iraq had nuclear power stations we knew this - they did not have the capability to convert to weapons grade. Additionally they could not attack US or UK - they do not have long range missles. They were bombed back to the stoneage in the first gulf war and did not have the capability to begin a WMD programme.

i agree with what you said and its nice that you understand the logic behind the conflict. However there is one difference between Falklands and Diego Garcia-- the color of the skins of the inhabitants. the Falklands people that Britain fought for were white people of british origins and those in Diego Garcia were of former black slaves origins and indians who came there as cheap labor. Britain contradicts herself in everything. what gives her the right to chose who has rights and who doesnt?

UR completely right my friend! UK only take advantage of the weak. They will help only when they can obtain a perceived value in return. They inflicted so much pain around the world(China, India, Argentina, Africa and surroundings) for centuries. It is difficult to have faith and trust in this type of country.

i wonder what they are doing in Iraq, Afghanistan. there will never be peace on this earth as long as the USA refuse accept that not everyone wants to live "the American way of life. Not everyone wants to be an America". If America wants to be respected in her effort to bring peace she should lead by example. America needs to leave the island in 2016 and give it back to the indigenous population. As for the UK they should not give it independence until the Island has been given proper support to rebuild in the form of reperations: This truely is an appaling affair.

and they are still receiving money from The USA for the leasing of this island. I have seen these people in Mauritius. They are in extreme poverty and cannot keep trend with the Mauritian people. It's a pity!!

I won't deny that the island does not belong to the USA. It is Brit all the way! Always has been. We just pay rent. The Brits used to use it (in the past) to deport people with plague and leprosy to, but since the plague and leprosy is gone from the empire, it's up for rent. Figured we'd use it for now. Cheers!

I am so happy that China is the most powerful nation on Earth. They used military threat to urge UK to give up Hong Kong which is now part of China. It's really sad that the inhabitants of Diego don't have the same opportunity to threaten UK.
