@postbopjazz, yes, but when Sinatra recorded it, he had Lana Turner in mind. I'm not disputing the song being a tribute originally to Billie Holliday, just what it represented to Sinatra.
Matt Dennis and Tom Adair wrote this song. Matt Dennis performance of this is much better. As for the story behind the song.
Dennis and Adair had gone to see Billie Holiday perform, reaching the club in a snowstorm. Adair had bought some violets for his date and he commented that he would like to pin them on Holiday's fur. This led to Violets for your furs.
A beautiful song for a gorgeous lady. Frankie with Tommy Dorsey, the sweetest clarinet sound of the swing era aka Johnny Mince playing the lead voice of the background ...
Great times, sad times, an era plagued by a cruel war but also dearly remembered because of romantic sounds like these.
Another beautiful video my friend , Thankyou.

It wasn't Frank's tribute to Lana. It's Dennis and Adair's to Billie Holiday. See RX7Qball's post; he's right on.

Beautiful! I had no idea Frank recorded this with Dorsey. It's my favorite song. And how appropriate it is for a tribute to the lovely Lana.

There's two things with beauty here: Lana and Frank's voice.
