This video starts just west of the Point of Rocks area east of Potter NE and ends in Cheyenne, to have seen this in my day growing up in Kimball it is something you never forget,,, ever
I've never lived more than a half mile from the U.P. "main line". You don't have to see it, but you know when #844 rolls through town. Got a sound all its own.
I stand corrected. 844 usually does frieght service!!! It saved a stalled out freight train pulling its own train on a hill in wyoming. 3 stallled diesels were nursed all the way back to the yards by this engine.
I just wish that Railroads would be smart enough to realize that when you need about 4 or more diesels to haul a mile of freight, 1 good steam engine could do that...and a good articulated could pull more than 6 diesels!
I grew up with the London Midland and Scottish railway, Stanier, Duchess Pacifics, with names like, 'Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Athol, Duchess of Sutherland. But I never saw anything like 844. Thank you for bringing back the memories of my boyhood. Incidentally where I now live was the home of the Mighty 8th U.S.Army Air Force in WW2. At most of the old airfields there are small memorials where the Union Jack and Stars and Stripes fly together. Gerry Ryan. Norfolk. England.
I know what you mean about the U.P cutting costs. Those of us here in the east, really lament the passing of the N.S. steam program and the 611 & 1218. Those were the good ole days!
You did a wonderful job filming the true lady of the rails. I've seen her a couple times in Lincoln close up, but seeing her wide open down the rails is just spectacular!! Thanks for posting!!
Glad you liked it, my wife thinks I plum crazy 4 chasin but it gets me out of her hair. I gotta go cause you never know when the UP will cut cost and the steam program will end.
In WWII German spies in America sent reports back to Berlin describing "mammoth steam locomotives 6 times the size of German locomotives, pulling trains that were miles and miles long".
They were of course describing the UP BigBoys, the N&W Y class, and the Virginia Alleghenies.
That was pretty cool. The only thing it was missing was reaction shots from unsuspecting drivers and locals as the train went bye. I would have loved to have seen their faces. =)
He is flyin' through those first couple of towns....those drivers are turning over. You had a hard time keeping up with him. *****

Does the diesel engine behind it help push? Or is it there in case the 844 gets stuck?

YEAH! with its "long legs" and 5000hp the 844 could easily haul some intermodal

But nothing is as good as the #844 DVD sold in the sherman hill concession car that is usually with this train and it supports the UP Steam Program!
