But Silverman's aristocrats joke is the only one I've heard that is ACTUALLY funny, for instance - she's willing to look at things in a new way and attack sacred cows. For that alone, she's funny

Gallagher is pretty much the least funny, most overtly moronic quasi-comedian I've ever seen. I kind of hope he gets AIDS, but I don't think it would kill him quickly enough. Fuck his right wing noise.

Based on your preference for Dennis Miller - a distinctly mediocre comedian, albeit better than Gallagher - I'd say that you must be a conservative type, and I suppose these are the only two nitwit pseudo-"comedians" left that pander to your point of view. Well, have fun with that, while the rest of the comedy world moves on and finds things that are, you know. Funny.

@blackjamm Actually, I don't like Dennis Miller, I was simply saying that he's intelligent. Also, I'm not conservative, and I prefer different kinds of humor. Gallagher is one of the more intelligent comedians, especially by today's standards. I also prefer comedians who point out stupidity, such as the examples from the English language.

@HABI7A7 If you think Gallagher is intelligent, especially by the standards of comedy today, then you're mad. Gallagher smashes fruit. Here's a list of comedians who are better and more intelligent than him: Louis CK, Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Brian Posehn...
Language comedy can be great. But this is rubbish. He speaks slowly and makes obvious "jokes" that most English speakers have made about spelling by the time they're seven.

@HABI7A7 You say that you need to understand sarcasm to find Gallagher funny. Possibly true. But you need to understand layer after layer of sarcasm, irony, and intellectual comedy to get Sarah Silverman. Her TV isn't so great, but her stand up is incredible. Unlike Gallagher, who tells OBVIOUS jokes that ANYBODY could do, and then smashes fruit, Sarah Silverman tells jokes that aren't obvious - that may have been set up for five minutes but still have a surprising finish.

@blackjamm Even Sarah Silverman's standup is unintelligent. I'm not sure how many times I've heard Gallagher say "doodie", but Sarah Silverman has said it in her standup several times. I actually just watched a clip of her standup where she's just making fun of midgets. Yes, you're right, that's high-brow stuff.

@HABI7A7 Besides, you're just going for Sarah Silverman, and ignoring the others. She's smarter and funnier than Gallagher, but not the funniest person in the world. David Cross and Patton Oswalt are two fantastic comedians, however. Yes, they make "fun of midgets", but you know what they also do? They also comment hilariously on the world. Gallagher is like a pre-schooler next to a real comedian, and then he has the cojones to criticise "mediocrity" in the Onion AV interview. It's crazy.

@blackjamm I was just using her as an example. You called her standup intelligent, and then say Gallagher's is not. Gallagher also comments hilariously on the world. The thing with comedy is that it's 100% opinion-based. I personally find David Cross and Louis CK to be hilarious. I also find Gallagher to be hilarious. You say he's stupid. You find Sarah Silverman funny. I find her to be obnoxious and stupid. It's all a matter of opinion.

@HABI7A7 Her stand-up is waaay more intelligent than Gallagher's, and far more interesting - she's willing to go the distance, and not worry if she offends anyone. Gallagher thinks it's funny to say "this word and this word have the same spelling but they are pronounced differently". That's not funny. That's just an accident of history that anyone can point out. Silverman comments hilariously and subversively about stereotyping and race in America. Gallagher talks about race too...

If the first impression is bad, you will never change your opinion. Sarah Silverman does not in any way exhibit intelligence in her act.

@HABI7A7 I grew up watching shitty American comedy on Sky when I was younger. I know Gallagher. I'm not basing my opinion on this video, or even on his Onion AV interview, although I'm using both to illustrate the point. Gallagher is just a racist old coot. He's angry about... something, but he never channels that anger into his act (until recently, when he started ranting about the Bible). He smashes fruit, he acts silly, he sprays his audience with coloured water. That's Gallagher.

@HABI7A7 ...but when he does it, as per the Onion AV Club interview, it's basically racism. He's not subverting racism at all; he is, it appears, actually a racist. I hope you see the difference.
He also lacks a sense of comedy timing, something even fucking Dane Cook has.
And comedy isn't "100% opinion based". We live in the same society, and people either comment on it intelligently or they don't. Gallagher does idiotic social commentary. Sarah Silverman doesn't.

@HABI7A7 I'm British, and in British English, both "spelt" and "spelled" are correct.
Saying "doodie" doesn't make you unintelligent; it's just a mixing of high-brow with low-brow, which is a normal practice in comedy (comedy is, after all, about social criticism and the breaking down of boundaries). But Silverman's aristocrats joke is the only one I've heard that is ACTUALLY funny, for instance - she's willing to look at things in a new way and attack sacred cows. For that alone, she's funny

@HABI7A7 And check out this watch?v=3bObItmxAGc for instance. Silverman's commentary is excellent, her point is well-made, and her timing and delivery are epic. Contrast this with Gallagher. His point is about language, and rather than discussing the interesting uses of languages, he goes off with poor timing, slow, boring delivery and stupid points about the spelling of a few totally inoffensive words, all of which leads to... no real point at all.
Tbh, I feel sorry for Gallagher.
