It's never wise for anyone to harrass venomous snakes (even if you think you're an expert). Best to photograph it with a telephoto lens from a safe distance. Getting that close and grabbing it is taking an unnecessary risk. I believe part of responsible teaching about these animals includes teaching safety precautions, and bare-handed snake-wrangling isn't the way. It's a good way to get maimed or even killed.
