  • my only idea to make it more people friendly is to make the handles wrap in front of the rider. like from one side only... think like those really old school desks? where the table wraps around you from one side. and you would push forward or pull twords you to turn.. that is all having them in front would make the rider feel safer.

  • Next test...........

    3/1/2012

My atv compared to this so called "yikebike"?

    Oops sorry

    Didn't see ya

    Next day.......

News 4 fucks reports: atv seriously injures "bike" rider

Atv rider also in intensive care unit for electrocution and heavy laughter after he saw the bike rider crash

  • la comparación se deba hacer con un dispositivo similar no con una bicicleta... sin embargo funciona muy bien y ya quiero mi YikeBike, jujuju

  • Hmm i wonder if there is a hidden comertial in here somwhere :p

Damn apple.. Why dont u call it ibike instead? -.-

  • What's the battery duration?

  • dear yikebike my birthday is 20 nov so you maybe know what i want?Xd

  • Looking at this video I'm amazed at the strength/flexibility/lightweight of carbon fiber.

  • I can't believe how negative people are to new ideas...I hope it's a success and that you guys become great innovators

  • I notice that some of the testing was done just up the road from where I live...typically poor condition roads in Christchurch...even before all the earthquakes! I saw some of these things cruising around Hagley Park last Summer...I really like the look of them

  • complimenti ... idea fantastica .... Bravi

  • i can bet that the weakest point is the battery which can last for... 1h?

  • Innovative looking, but imagine taking a header on this thing, which looks alarmingly easy to do.

  • 220 is an extremely low weight capacity compared to a typical bicycle. This brings up questions of durability. The thing sounds like a remote control car. It looks plastic and fragile. With a 220 weight limit is clearly is fragile.

For this price tag, I wouldn't buy it unless it came with a zippo style universal warranty.

  • @Innomen I know they have carbon fiber ones (the more expensive one) and aluminum ones (the cheaper one). Still both are far to expensive to be worth it to me. The portability is cool though.

  • Oh man, I want to get me one of these!

  • now can it handle off-road :D? LOL just asking though i know it's not meant for that >_>

  • is it fast

  • :) that's not a big pot hole. That's one of the smallest we've got in our city :). Come to Chisinau, Moldova, and give it a test. It's full of hills, bad roads, and so on.

  • @Capilleary then that's your city's problem :)

  • @wateverheal tell me 'bout it... :( I even damaged the bearing on one of my car's wheels in one of those potholes. (oh, it's still me, under another nickname) Unfortunately I live in a place where nobody gives a damn about problems which are outside their own lives.

  • @napillnik wow sorry to hear about your car mate. wow don't the government fix those damn holes? damn.. good luck to you in future drive out man o_o i feel you..

  • ok its good at all those things, i want to see what it cant do lol

  • too bad its $3500+...and $350 more to select any other color than black

  • My granny rides bike faster than guy on 01:05 :P

  • @JOBAHT Obviously this guy is cycling pushing brakes. This is cheat!

  • How much weight can it handle ??

  • @halcyon0830 100kg (220 lb)

  • cause its better than bikes, test it on Red Bull Rampage to see some real action of it. next thing, it recharges longer than it can run. so, you can be better for approx 40 minutes, than start looking for a plug.

and, yes, get someone who actually knows how to ride a bicycle

  • Very similar to a normal bike - it pays to watch out for big pot holes. I've certainly been avoiding a few in San Francisco today! But it is no problem going around or slowing down.

  • @yikebike I find it hard to believe this little gutless thing can go very many places in San Francisco. It barely makes it up these gradual hills in the video.

  • If it runs out of batteries, is it easy to charge at power points outdoors?

  • Seems great with anticipated obstacles, but what about unanticipated obstacles? If the rider doesn't see the pothole then I would suspect they could accidentally perform the "dismount" maneuver.

  • its great! :)

  • you want a REAL stress test?THE most brutal test?

drive it in ATHENS!!! IF you dare!

We buy off road motorbikes to endure the stress from the bumbs!

  • It is an interesting design for sure but it requires rechargeable batteries to run, a regular bicycle doesn't. If a way to propel the devise using manpower arises, I'll be interested.

  • Would like to see heaver duty tires as well as some sort of suspension on this thing - especially for the asking price.

  • ...get someone who actually knows how to ride a bicycle as the competitor...

  • @WeRWun it's not supposed to be a competition but to show the YikeBike performance relative to something that people are familiar with.

  • how fast does it go in mph? and whats the weight limit?

  • @birdman9564 14 mph (23 kmph, 220 lb (100kg) weight limit

  • well that answered alot of my questions... i just hope they find a way to make the battery last longer and bring the price down to atleast $1000 eh maybe with the metal version

  • Nice one! Good to see a positive kiwi innovation!

  • Whats it powered by and how long does it last ?

  • @wifiman1 - Lithium battery that lasts about 9 km, 25-30 minutes

  • i had a question howmuch do yikebikes cost

  • @jaden2950 - €2635(Euros), £2,255(UK Pounds), approximately $3425(US Dollars) excl. shipping, taxes and duty.

  • that was a deep pot hole??? come to England and you will see bad potholes

  • @fairyheli2 - we've ridden around London and other parts of England - yes there are some shockers there but we managed to avoid any major issues

  • Can the YikeBike make it up an extra steep hill in San Francisco? The last 3 blocks coming home for me would be "very" steep. Most of my trip would be pretty flat though but the last 3 blocks are killer.

  • I really like how it can be folded into a bag. But riding position is bit awkward..

  • sry to sound if im bashing this.. but that guy riding it in the vid looks like his going to fall off every second lol

  • its a pretty cool idea.. but why arent the steering rods in front?

  • This Bike might look nice, but is one of those transport vicles that have no quality.

  • What about the weird stares you will get from everyone looking at you?

  • Great Idea! It may be take a while to get control over handling the bike and mantaining a straight upperbody in order not to damage your back.

  • Very impressive. But 60mm is not a "deep" hole at all in Brazil.

  • This guy that made this is a genius, Although I am not a fan of the driving position, it is clear that the riders are struggling for control especially when there is gravel. I can imagine he has no plans on improving the riding position after all of this work, very impressive on how it is packable.

  • @adsabine1 The riding position is ideal for a quick emergency stop much like 2:05

  • Yea like what

whiskers123 said, i kinda agree it looks like its struggling.

Or maybe its because the bike is relatively silent that gives us a feeling its struggling

  • very cool part from price

  • What a biased test.

That was a rubbish cyclist on a rubbish bike.

How much does that bike cost compared to the yikebike?

  • The point is not to show it is better than a bike but to show it in comparison to something people are familiar with. The point is to also show that the YikeBike can easily handle city commuting

  • Too expensive. Not interested.

  • Yay Burnside Primary!

2 rear wheels would add extra stability, especially when riding slowly....

  • I'll buy one when they make it sound like a Harley...

  • Interesting !

Looks like fun and the recumbent-like under seat steering is so comfortable . Hope the price drops to allow the masses to purchase one .

  • what about SAFETY? Where are the helmets in the video? What's happening if there's a car rushing onto you?

The position of the hands seems quite dangerous in case of an emergency break. I'm not sure the body weight is well balanced on this bike.

  • In most of our target markets helmets are not worn by cyclists. We don't wear when testing as we have NEVER hit the ground. You are only ever going the speed of running and can just step off the front. The YikeBike has safety features that most bikes dont have, electronic anti-skid brakes, build in lights, indicators and brake lights, speed limited.

Not having handle bars in front of you is in our view much safer because there are no handle bars to go flying over in an emergency.

  • Ok I hope there won't be any bad news on this point. Time will tell.

  • thats a very good point, but i agree with alot of people, the price is a bit much.

  • Respectfully, the fact that many people do not wear helmets is no excuse. If you don't take your own tester's / employee's safety seriously, what about your customers? You should be encouraging your target markets to think safety; if they choose not to, that would be their responsibility not theirs.

The fact that you haven't had a serious accident yet is probably only an indication that ridden miles are still low. Its the speed of the car that hits you that counts, not only your own.

  • this is still a great concept though

  • a bike's turning circle is much smaller if you know how to ride it that is. It practically turns almost without moving. the guy riding a bike is obviously cutting the yike a lot of slack throughout this comparison.

  • I guess some groceries can go in a backpack, as if youre walking or taking public transportation. It is obviously not designed for driving the family out!

You could have more autonomy by buying spare batteries, like some people do with cells. I read that you recharge each one in 30 minutes. It is an option that can be offered by the seller, with package prices.

  • We are likely to be offering the option of additional batteries but it really designed for short journeys. Yes groceries can go in backpack too.

  • the engine is 1200watt ?! did I get that right ?

  • Yes - very powerful so you can go up hills and accelerate quickly but speed limited for safety

  • Then why does it look like it struggles on even the small hills in this video? At 0:36 it struggles to go up a small incline. Also at 2:53 it looks like the thing powers out and the rider is forced to ride up the hill at an angle. Other than that I think this is a great idea for crowded cities with mild climates. It will be a harder sell elsewhere, but depending on the price for the economy model, I think they could become a daily sight. :D Good Luck!

  • Hi wow85,

at least the Yikebike DOES have indicators and rear/brake lights.... is there another pushbike offering the same? True, traffic can be dangerous, but here there is a true push to improve the safety for two-wheelers, so what is it your'e criticising? As for the 6-12 bags... if someone is stupid enough to try that on a pushbike why is it then worth pointing it out? I wear a backpack and so do most of the commuting folks I know....

  • Well, a tank can do swamps, mountains and other areas much better than a car. Wanna upgrade?

About the accidents in general, they happen but on a yikebike you have a perfect view all around you, you can't go a fast speed (like i on my bike in city traffic) and you can use footpaths much easier than with a bike. plus, people won't start doing phone calls on their yikebike, i see a few people doing that on normal bikes.

  • Seems that this little machine is quite something! Can't wait to buy one and yike around London to fulfil Boris' traffic masterplan!

  • too expensive, too much noise

  • Where the brake light and head light ???? no brake light zoom to hit a car from behind.. Zoom to hotpital ...

  • it is 9-10 kg, and price is about 3500 pound

  • Nice demos of an interesting vehicle. It would have been good to have a demo of it folding in there as well. I was surprised how loud the gears were, is that normal?

When they get the price down around $500 I would be interested.

  • I agree around 500 would make my consider it.

  • full carbon hand-moulded frame, 1200watt engine, new chemical technology batteries and a flawless design.. $500 might pay for the engine but good luck with riding that.

  • Purely Electric. Its a vehicle for the Lazy. But then so is most vehicles. The Only Vehicles that are not lazy are human Powered vehicles..

  • im having a stiff neck just watching this video

  • One question: can you pedal on it or is it purely electrically driven? I do not think I would like to ride it in the latter case ...

  • Looks pretty interesting. Well done on innovating! Good luck Yike Bike!

  • flaw in design: hands should be in front on all moving vehicle in case of crash.

what size is the motor ?
