my only idea to make it more people friendly is to make the handles wrap in front of the rider. like from one side only... think like those really old school desks? where the table wraps around you from one side. and you would push forward or pull twords you to turn.. that is all having them in front would make the rider feel safer.
I notice that some of the testing was done just up the road from where I live...typically poor condition roads in Christchurch...even before all the earthquakes! I saw some of these things cruising around Hagley Park last Summer...I really like the look of them
220 is an extremely low weight capacity compared to a typical bicycle. This brings up questions of durability. The thing sounds like a remote control car. It looks plastic and fragile. With a 220 weight limit is clearly is fragile.
For this price tag, I wouldn't buy it unless it came with a zippo style universal warranty.
@Innomen I know they have carbon fiber ones (the more expensive one) and aluminum ones (the cheaper one). Still both are far to expensive to be worth it to me. The portability is cool though.
:) that's not a big pot hole. That's one of the smallest we've got in our city :). Come to Chisinau, Moldova, and give it a test. It's full of hills, bad roads, and so on.
@wateverheal tell me 'bout it... :( I even damaged the bearing on one of my car's wheels in one of those potholes. (oh, it's still me, under another nickname) Unfortunately I live in a place where nobody gives a damn about problems which are outside their own lives.
@napillnik wow sorry to hear about your car mate. wow don't the government fix those damn holes? damn.. good luck to you in future drive out man o_o i feel you..
cause its better than bikes, test it on Red Bull Rampage to see some real action of it. next thing, it recharges longer than it can run. so, you can be better for approx 40 minutes, than start looking for a plug.
and, yes, get someone who actually knows how to ride a bicycle
Very similar to a normal bike - it pays to watch out for big pot holes. I've certainly been avoiding a few in San Francisco today! But it is no problem going around or slowing down.
@yikebike I find it hard to believe this little gutless thing can go very many places in San Francisco. It barely makes it up these gradual hills in the video.
Seems great with anticipated obstacles, but what about unanticipated obstacles? If the rider doesn't see the pothole then I would suspect they could accidentally perform the "dismount" maneuver.
It is an interesting design for sure but it requires rechargeable batteries to run, a regular bicycle doesn't. If a way to propel the devise using manpower arises, I'll be interested.
well that answered alot of my questions... i just hope they find a way to make the battery last longer and bring the price down to atleast $1000 eh maybe with the metal version
Can the YikeBike make it up an extra steep hill in San Francisco? The last 3 blocks coming home for me would be "very" steep. Most of my trip would be pretty flat though but the last 3 blocks are killer.
This guy that made this is a genius, Although I am not a fan of the driving position, it is clear that the riders are struggling for control especially when there is gravel. I can imagine he has no plans on improving the riding position after all of this work, very impressive on how it is packable.
The point is not to show it is better than a bike but to show it in comparison to something people are familiar with. The point is to also show that the YikeBike can easily handle city commuting
In most of our target markets helmets are not worn by cyclists. We don't wear when testing as we have NEVER hit the ground. You are only ever going the speed of running and can just step off the front. The YikeBike has safety features that most bikes dont have, electronic anti-skid brakes, build in lights, indicators and brake lights, speed limited.
Not having handle bars in front of you is in our view much safer because there are no handle bars to go flying over in an emergency.
Respectfully, the fact that many people do not wear helmets is no excuse. If you don't take your own tester's / employee's safety seriously, what about your customers? You should be encouraging your target markets to think safety; if they choose not to, that would be their responsibility not theirs.
The fact that you haven't had a serious accident yet is probably only an indication that ridden miles are still low. Its the speed of the car that hits you that counts, not only your own.

a bike's turning circle is much smaller if you know how to ride it that is. It practically turns almost without moving. the guy riding a bike is obviously cutting the yike a lot of slack throughout this comparison.
I guess some groceries can go in a backpack, as if youre walking or taking public transportation. It is obviously not designed for driving the family out!
You could have more autonomy by buying spare batteries, like some people do with cells. I read that you recharge each one in 30 minutes. It is an option that can be offered by the seller, with package prices.
Then why does it look like it struggles on even the small hills in this video? At 0:36 it struggles to go up a small incline. Also at 2:53 it looks like the thing powers out and the rider is forced to ride up the hill at an angle. Other than that I think this is a great idea for crowded cities with mild climates. It will be a harder sell elsewhere, but depending on the price for the economy model, I think they could become a daily sight. :D Good Luck!
at least the Yikebike DOES have indicators and rear/brake lights.... is there another pushbike offering the same? True, traffic can be dangerous, but here there is a true push to improve the safety for two-wheelers, so what is it your'e criticising? As for the 6-12 bags... if someone is stupid enough to try that on a pushbike why is it then worth pointing it out? I wear a backpack and so do most of the commuting folks I know....
Well, a tank can do swamps, mountains and other areas much better than a car. Wanna upgrade?
About the accidents in general, they happen but on a yikebike you have a perfect view all around you, you can't go a fast speed (like i on my bike in city traffic) and you can use footpaths much easier than with a bike. plus, people won't start doing phone calls on their yikebike, i see a few people doing that on normal bikes.
Nice demos of an interesting vehicle. It would have been good to have a demo of it folding in there as well. I was surprised how loud the gears were, is that normal?

what about SAFETY? Where are the helmets in the video? What's happening if there's a car rushing onto you?
