@carmenchowable Thanks so much for your comment. You're correct that this story has a sad ending, but we're fortunate to see Ms. Shearer in one of her most elegant performances!
Such a stand out, firey red hair and eyes as big as texas, I looked up stuff about her tonight aug 12 2011, I thought she was of german decent with a name like schearer but she was actually scotish, and she died not real long ago 2006 so its within the last five years, she had such expressive danceing and real good technique comeing from and age where technique in ballet was not as refined as to day but, back then it was better since they could actually dance and were not just robots to the song
@manga12 Hi manga12! Very grateful for your wonderful comments, and how much you enjoyed this clip! She really was superb with that amazing hair, enormous eyes and unique talent. Several of the "close-ups" of her face, while dancing, might well be objets d'art of themselves. Cut to the chase, she'll always be a winner, and I'm so honored that you agree!
I just watched this movie - I really loved it! It was really engaging - I especially loved the middle sequence with the little boy. I'm really impressed with Moira Shearer's dancing-I always had the idea that the technique of her era's dancers was quite inferior to those of today, but -apart from just moving so beautifully -she's really strong. Her pointe work is incredible (I used to dance years ago). I love her dancing, and I like her as an actress too-too bad she didn't do more film.
@janestahl You're very welcome! This is one of my favorite clips! In an odd way, it showcases both of their talents! The close-ups of Ms. Shearer, several in profile, should be blown-up, turned to stills, and entered in a contest for best cinematography! Sorry to be so over the top! Best wishes.
I fell in love with the 16th variation, when I first saw this movie in 1953, and I have been in love with it ever since. It plays in my head during the happiest times in my life.
Stunning; she is so beautiful..the whole package - her grace and her skill and she is her beautiful serene face and body. Amazing dancer. This scene I have never viewed before. What movie is this from? I would love to see it. Thanks for posting it. James Mason was very handsome when he was young. I am spellbound like he is at the end of this scene.
Shearer could have been another Audrey Hepburn. The camera loved her in the same way. Gene Kelly begged her to do Brigadoon. She chose to go back to dancing.
The choreography is exquisite confectionery, but it's not trivial. It';s Frederick Ashton's ONLY site-specific dance -- look how he uses hte space, the columns stand in for partnering in hte adage -- and how he steals from Florine's solo, and from Odette's solo so beautifully and hte line of chaines into the tombe to the floor! It's a WONDERUFL dance. And she's fabulous.
Regardless of the preposterous dramatic situation and the trivial choreography, this gives us a real glimpse into the standard and style of English dancing in the 50s. Shearer is a model of placement, grace and clear technique. No exaggerations or distortions, just a beautiful flow of movement. I've really enjoyed this. Thanks.
It is sort of unnerving to see criticism of Shearer & Mason doing this rather ordinary movie, as if this is their real level of art. Yes, I saw this "first run" as a teen & now have a personal copy of this entire "B" movie. Here are one of the worlds ultimate ballerinas & best actors ever. Shearer was "punished" for doing a "movie", not permitted in those days, Mason took roles of all sorts as part of his profession, I saw him "live" & also have his "Dr. Fisher of Geneva". Great artistry!
I'd forgotten all about this film - used to crop up on CH4 on Sunday afternoons but has disappeared from our screens now.
There a good chemistry between Mason and Shearer, while the scene is just a Hollywood reprise of The Red Shoes, it's beautifully choreographed and acted.
@tomelty - In New York City, this film was shown on WOR-TV (Channel 9) for many years after 1968-69; it was part of a massive package of post 1948 MGM films ('MGM/7', first made available to local stations in 1968) that was divided between that station and WNBC-TV (Channel 4). For the most part, WNBC got the "better" titles of the bunch.
This is from the movie The Story of Three Loves in which a young ballerina who has been forbidden to dance because of a heart condition dances one last time for a famous creator of ballets, and pays the ultimate price for it. The man never forgets here and she remains his ideal forever and only love!
You've captured in words what I never could in describing this scene! Thank you so much!
The dance before the fireplace, and the subsequent revelation of her dancing to the main theme still make me shiver! Your beautiful description is without equal!

The L.A. Times gave Moira Shearer such a paltry obituary when she died. Strange, because she and "The Red Shoes" were so very influencial.

Well . . . the choreography here has zilch to do with the music.
Easy to demonstrate: just play the sound at, say, a 2 second lag from the video.
It makes no difference -- the two are entirely unrelated . . .

Laurence Olivier was better at being the charming protagonist.
James Mason owned at being a villain.
But they were both so HOT!!
