I have a suspicion that the US prison system is in effect a bit of a faith farm..
The system may be setup such that it's in the inmates interest to declare themselves religious - as they'll fare better at parole hearings etc. Also - incarceration presumably being the lowest point of their lives for many - they'd be more susceptible I guess.
