I saw them in Hamburg, Germany at The Star Club in '62 while in the U.S. Navy. Then again in Liverpool a year later. And...my last name is...McCartney. Thanks for posting this. What great memories!! :D)
just to think that they started off with jobs that not even the people in hamburgh would do now look at em the most famous group in history R.I.P John and George
@TheNeonTide They, didn´t record this at all. Ted "King Size" Taylor, asked John if he could make a tape of the evening, for that he would pay for all the beer, John, of course said yes, and thats how this came to life

I'm lucky to own this album, thanks Kingsize for having the right finger in the right place at the right time, regardless of the legalities, this is a valid and rare document
I wonder if any of the patrons who went to the Star Club during the late 50's and early 60's ever thought that the house band would go on to be the greatest band of all time
@zosodude13 John Lennon used this same chord progression for his demos song "You save my soul" look for this song here in youtube and you will see it sunds same way, it's the same chord progression, i love this find!
The guy who recorded the Star Club tapes was not Ted Taylor. His name was Adrian Barber. Adrian gave the tapes to Ted, who then brought it to Allan Williams' attention.
I owned the recorder (Philips 4 Track). I owned the tape spools and did most of the button pushing! Adrian and I set up the microphone, 1 mic', hanging in the middle of the club.
Obviously you have been listening to the people who know everything about "NOTHING"!
this song is awesome,I listen to it very often since I got a "rocking at the star club" bootleg something like 10 years ago. and it's very cool to play too. it should have been recorded for "please please me" or "with the beatles".
I even have a personal experience about this one: last year, one day I tryed to do my own home-made version of it,and the next day, I met a woman that I'm certain is "the one",
so I was like "whoaaaa... where have you been all my life... indeed"
I send all my loving to you
I really enjoyed that. I practically felt like I was there. Man, the days where you could actually hear the Beatles live without screams and whatnot. And to watch them up on a stage without all the fame and money yet. That had to be very cool. Of course unless you were a claravoyent you wouldn't know that they were going to end up superfamous, but would likely think "Hey these guys are great! I love them" "
I´m waiting 4 just 1 of ya...
Worth comparing this to Gerry and The Pacemakers version also on YT. Very different; The Beatles live rockin' rhythm to the melody of Gerry's. Both are good in their own way. It would have been interesting to have seen how The Beatles would have sounded with a studio version...
Yes a great piece of sound preserved from that era. You just don't hear guitars making that kind of sound anymore. The "Star Club" tapes were retrieved from the derelict offices of a recording engineering company by one-time manager Allan Williams in the early 70's after they had been forgotten by everyone else !
at-least THAT is What Allan Williams said ... recorded by Ted Taylor on His (Grundig ???) TapeRecorder at 3+3/4 Inches-per-Second , in December of 1962 (Hamburg Christmas Show that the Beatles were cotractually-obligated to perform-at ???) ... "legally" , the Recordings "should-have" been the Property of E.M.I. , since the Beatles were signed to An "Exclusive" Contract , at the Time of the Recording.
When this tape was recorded, obviously The Beatles were NOT officially under contract with E.M.I. resulting in the fact that, at no stage, in any High Court case, were E.M.I. represented.
Sorry kingsize, but hadn't they already released "Love me do" at this point?
I wouldn't have thought it would have changed matters that much though - a souvenir recording (which, ok in hindsight probably shouldn't have been released to the public but was a nice document for a beatles nut to own) ...I know the Judge ordered the tapes be destroyed in the late 90's, did that actually happen in the end or are they still floating around somewhere do you know?
It's so obvious why the Beatles became huge, Lennon and McCarney had what the other didn't and when they all came together in harmony it was magic. Lennon was such a great white rocker, very unique... Paul could do the more black type of white soul singing, but John brought the cool hard edge to the early Beatles stuff.
Thanks doowoop909!!! My father and his brother used to be regulars at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany. He told me many stories about it. I grew up in NYC, but love to hear his stories. I passed in front of it in 1997. He doesn't remember seeing them, but said that my Uncle remembered them. There were so many bands that played there. Maybe my father was drunk when they played there, and just doesn't remember them!!!
Hello Katsofia. I want to apologize for taking so long to respond. Unfortunately my Uncle died a few years ago, but if you want, I can ask my father if my uncle told him any stories about what he remembers about the Beatles at the Sar Club. I do know that they both frequented the place a lot, they used to hit all of the bars/clubs in the Reeperbahn, St.Pauli, and all of Hamburg on a regular basis.
Probably the most interesting track on the "Live At The Star Club" double LP is what I believe is the only live performance of "Ask Me Why" ever recorded. Since its from December of 1962, that means it was only a month after the studio version was recorded, and a month before it was released to the public.
Great song. The original single was released by Arthur Alexander in 1962. The Beatles must have been fans of his records because they also covered "A Shot of Rhythm and Blues", "Soldier of Love (Lay Down Your Arms)" and "Anna (Go To Him)".
They're not bad. Bring them back later and we'll see if they can pass the audition.

@killchiro No, it was obvious why they became huge. 10 000 hours of performing in Hamburg in 2 years when they were relatively unknown to the world.
That's some practice there son! no band in the world can come close to matching that many hours performing live (maybe U2)
