As a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE fan of TK, it's only this year that I've really realised how brilliant this song is and just how underrated it is (like most of The Killers' music is, unfortunately)...and also, Elton John can make any song brilliant!! :)
Flowers is a devout Christian. He has a number of characteristics that are strikingly similar to Bono, and the band to U2. On the one hand I wonder if they just came along at the wrong time for more people not to like them. Then again, less fans around, more room for me to enjoy them!
Neil Tennant's part just lit up the stage! Best part...but dun get me wrong the whole song was too siick, but i liked Tennant's part the best. 2:15-2:32
Absolutely agree. I love The Killers and B. Flowers' voice, but often just skip everything - only to listen to this part... Neil Tennant's pleasant, soothing voice has an indescribable radiance. A voice you can distinguish from all hundreds of thousands of other singers in the world. A true gem.
@sweettooth202 or maybe jesus .... You know , generally most christmas carols and songs are about jesus as it is the anniversary of his birth? just saying
i hear that voice and feel such a hope...i feel like just a moment....that the world isnt so bad....then it ends and i look around me and once again feel sick and what i see....then i look at him....and know more than anything that there's someone out there who can save me.
his voice is so beautiful and im put in a trance everytime i hear him....its crazy....its so soft but so strong and manly but boyish and sweet but solemn. its a perfect blend of everythinng u want....
I found the explanation of the song for those who were wondering:
The song speaks of Saint Joseph, the father of Jesus. Flowers, Elton and Tennant take turns in describing the difficulties that he must have felt being the father of the proclaimed savior. They also sing of the public attention Joseph would have received and, as the title of the song says, that he did a better job than they would have.
@p0mathix You have some truely incredible insight. I cant see how anyone else could possibly have figured out what you have. I'm glad you have shared your sage-like wisdom with us simple folks. I thought the song was about something completely different. Wow, just, WOW.
Just heard this for the first time last night... great song! Oh, and not tryng to spark a holy war or anything, just wanted to say I liked it! :*D It is Christmas for GOD's sake!!
Can someone please explain this song to me? I love both Jesus and The Killers, but I don't understand what the lyrics are referring to, especially the part of 40 years lost in the wilderness. Thanks:)
It's it's sad to see this song didn't take off or receive much attention despite the collaborations. it's very well crafted, the lyrics and vocals are outstanding. It's one of my favourite Christmas songs and definitely the Killers best.
But because it's tied to the christian faith anyone unfamiliar with the religion will be confused. Also any atheists or muslims will see this song as offensive because its about a different faith. Which is stupid and unfortunate.
@TheMightyQuinn3000 I'm not saying people won't like it, I'm saying people won't understand. I had a Catholic upbringing so I know who Joseph is and what this song refers to. If you know who joseph is then you'll also understand.
My point is everyone is offended by different religions, notably Muslims, so because this is about the Catholic faith it hasn't received any airplay or attention. which is why nobody knows about it. On the other Hand 'Don't shoot me Santa has nearly 2 million views.
@Scorpino123 Why do you think nobody has heard this song, and it's never been on the music channels, or received any radio airplay?? People are easily offended. My old church was rebuilt in a new area, but the residents complained about the crucifix on the church.
It's the world we live in and it looks like you have a problem accepting the fact people don't want to hear a song about the christian faith that's you problem. Its my opinion, can you think of another reason?? didn't think so.
@120Vanquish120 You should really get out more--maybe you'd realize that the world is filled with muslims and atheists who aren't "offended" by songs about christianity. I'm pretty agnostic, and I like this song, even though it refers to a religion that I don't particularly subscribe to. The reason this song isn't amazing popular is not because of some muslim/jewish/atheistic conspiracy--you do realize that nearly 80% of Americans identify themselves as christians?
@themshow118 Why is everyone missing the point of my comments?? I'm not explaining something again that's merely an opinion. No one mentioned a conspiracy and I'm refering to the UK, as bullshit like this has occured before. So you wouldn't understand.
And yeah I get out enough thanks - maybe you should stop making zombie videos, it's been done before.

@SantiLon14 We may not know what the ultimate truth (if there is a "truth") is but we can certainly check what isn't. I never said there wasn't something else than us, which, of course, I can't prove or disprove, I'm just saying that if it does exist (I'm of the people that believe that there isn't) it didn't create religion and hasn't really talked to us. All religions are completely made up by humanity and, unlike God's existence, it can be proved. Your last few sentences didn't make sense.
@guardcorp Hmm, i find science very limited. And what can it prove when it comes to it! The only proff you get from science is, that when they find a new answer, that have to correct the old answer. Faith on the other hand, gives a hope for the future, nomatter what kind of madness that goes on in this world. You are loved!! ;)
@childofGod36 "when they find a new answer, that have to correct the old answer."
Uhm, yeah, that's how it works (at least if you want to find the truth about things) and it beats the hell out of believing the same lie for centuries. Also, the church has had to correct itself several times now (remember Galileo? The Inquisition anyone?) so if "god" speaks through the church does that mean that he was wrong or that a bunch of old people are making stuff up as they go along? I thought so.
@guardcorp It´s true that i as a believer can´t prove that she was a virgin. But, then on the other hand, you can´t prove she wasn´t :) It´s all a matter what we believe. I believe that Jesus loves you so much, that you were on His mind when He gave His life on the cross. Not to judge you, but to bring you into peace with God! You are loved by your creator, nomatter if you believe in Him or not. Maybe you want proof? Prove me wrong ;) Great song by the way!
Yes, Elton John sings in this song. I'd definitely recommend listening to the whole song. If you've ever heard Elton John sing, his voice is almost unmistakenable. As far as I can tell the voices go...Flowers, John, Flowers, John, Guitar Solo, John, Tennant, All 3, John, All 3, John...and they then they alternate repeating lines.
I wrote all that and forgot to really answer your question. Eh, my bad. No, this was not on a CD...at least not on a Killer's studio album. It may be on some box set or compilation album or some holiday album, but to my knowledge it isn't on any of their studio albums.
No, this song is "Joseph, Better You Than Me", a single that the Killers put out in collaboration with Neil Tennant from the Pet Shop Boys and Elton John. It came out as a Christmas single in 2008.
Every Christmas the Killers put out a single, meaning they just release one song. In 2006 it was "A Great Big Sled", in 2007 it was "Don't Shoot Me Santa", in 2008 it was this, and last year it was "¡Happy Birthday Guadalupe!"
This song is about two Josephs. One is the husband of the Virgin Mary. The other is Joseph Smith. The Temple in Salt Lake City took 40 years to build. New York was the child Joseph Smith's home when he grew up. The other parts are about LDS history but it is too involved (and controversial) to get into. Truth be told, much of the song makes no sense unless you realize it is about Joseph Smith, primarily.
I would never have picked up that subtext -- the New York reference went over my head. Any chance that Sir Elton or Neil Tennant have a clue that they're singing LDS theology?
My best guess is that they are both close enough to Brandon Flowers to know the subtext of the song. Most likely they are fascinated by it, at least a little bit. Then again Star Wars was produced by the Mormon Gary Kurtz and most people hardly notice the references to The Book Of Mormon and LDS origins that proliferate in the first two episodes of that series and half of the third. I doubt the intentions of the lyrics of this song will change its continued acceptance, one way or the other.
I liked the idea of the song focusing on a figure in the Christmas story that's so often ignored as irrelevant, and the insight that they give into him as a human being rather than just a character in a book. That being said, it really doesn't go anywhere from there. Come on, guys! We know you can do better than this!! Remix time!
Needs more Tennant and less Elton.

Remix time!

Elton completely ruins this song. Pet Shop Boys and Flowers are killing it.
