Heard this today on radio. What's really bad about "oldies" stations, is they all play the same few songs of any given year over... and ... over with no "B' list songs. I honestly liked this song, and. I bought the "45" to it that year, but I forgot it even existed! I haven't heard it one time in 30+ years 'til today. When's the last time you heard "13 Questions", from about '72 ? (Seatrain). I'm now 57. A song from my youth sure shows how different things are! Over all I think they're better!
And to continue....this song reminds us of being free to roam as we pleased, with no fuckin plan or cellphone or anything, it rminds us of what it was like to sit with a gang of people..in the meadow...and listen to tunes while drinking and enjoyin a scene, this song brings back when u were happy just to be with your friends, last of all...this song makes us wonder why we come down so hard on our own kids today when this type of music\/behavior made us who we are.....EXPERIENCED/HAPPY people.
I see the comments that are out here in YT Land re: This tune... I'll attempt to nail it down in this summary: This song reminds us all of what it was like to jump out of our houses in the a.m. and hitch a ride to the town center, this song reminds us of meeting at 6 p.m. behind buildings and firing a quick doobah before cruising to a party, this song reminds us of motorcycles, long hair, 18 year old drinking age and hanging out with a mix of jocks, heads, gearheads, and ANYONE who was cool.
I gotta say.. and this ain't easy for a guy that grew up listening to the real GFR and and riddin motorcycles and all the things that went along with being a fan this band. this song brought tears to my eyes hearing it again!
Thumbs up if you came here because after years and years you've found that those words after "Sail away sweet sister" and before "Sweet child o'mine" belongs to this song!!!! Awesome!!!
Never cared for this in 74 but I am crazy about it now. IMpossible to resist. Grand Funk just gets better with time as does so much of the music of that general time. Glad I was there!
to be honest i never new this song existed til now! lol! but decided to investigate it after remembering seeing axl rose sing/yell the start of it before Sweet Child Of Mine in 1992! glad i did now! Cheers!
jgwalla, Thanks very much for posting. A great, great song that is musically simple but makes you feel so good. I remember hearing this in like 2nd or 3rd grade riding the school bus home. Love this song, thank you again !!!
I love hearing from all you seniors near 50.... geez, what the heck happened here anyway! :) This has to be my all time best song in HS... I'm not one of those people that keeps re-living high school days, but this sends cold chills up and down my back hearing it and reminding me of all the good times we really had and what a truly innocent society we were then,,,we just didn't know it!,,, how about Mark, Don & Mel "I'm Your Captain"...WOW! these songs will live forever on Utube!
"All the stories coming back to me, from my friends and the people I don't wanna see. The things they say I know they just couldn't be true at least not until I hear it from you."
Remember back when lyrics like this could just tear your heart out?
Bad time to be in love, great time to be loving life.
Don't make them like this anymore. Just good music and honest singing. Can't get this song out of my head and I was just a kid when it came out, but I still remember it playing on my Mom's radio in the kitchen. Sweet tune.
When I was a teenager, I was friends with someone whose older sister was associated with this band. That meant nothing to me. I was discovering early Bing Crosby, Mildred Bailey, Leo Reisman, and the like.
Now I empathize with my father who "discovered" Donna Summer 15 years after the height of her fame.
Maybe I picked a bad time to find out I like this song.
i used to sing this tune all the time and my friends said i did an excellent job with it!!! i will never forget those days, the days of wine and roses, PEACE
One of the Railroads best songs, you can definitely hear Rundgren's influence in this.A little commercial?perhaps, but a great song nontheless. I can never get tired of good meaningful songs like this one.Good thing only 6 assholes were never in love! But maybe thats a good thing!
WOW! I was on Bandstand in 1974,and Dick Clark played this, even have the video, and there I was with my boyfriend(,now my husband) so cool to see how young I was (15) ,my kids laugh at the clothes, bell bottoms, platform shoes we wore, everytime I here this song I thing of that video & the great times I had growing up in the 70s The best music era eva!
@RedSoxFan4eva1000 What A GREAT story! How cool that you have preserved those days on film so our children can get A kick out of it too, (Might as well be fun for everyone, it was at the time too, I'm sure)! A friend of mine ended up in Metalica's "Binge and purge" video taken from A Seattle concert Don't quote me on it but judging by the age of dude at the time in the video, My guess would be maybe at "Monsters Of Rock"
Hearing this song brings back the best summer of my life!! Grand Funk, Three Dog Night! Never do we hear music like that anymore! This song makes me smile too!
@monaxey Yeah, Ive heard it, and it f****n blows! GNR rule at their own stuff, but THIS original is perfection, same way I feel about "Live And Let Die".
Growing up around flint everybody knows gfr. My uncle went to school with the guitar player. Im of a different generation but I love this song cause its so true to a lot of love situations.
I was born 4 years after this song was released. I know it, because my parents used to dance to it. I would dance with them, and I never forgot this song. A very awesome song from the past. Thanks for sharing it - Jo.
I'm 48 and when I hear music like this it makes me feel cool to be my age. You'd never hear this on American Idol, and that's why I never watch it. Finding music like this is why it's worth spending time on utube.
@MrGoodtimesbadtimes I'm 44 andI grew up with listening to this music on the radio....brings back Summer time for me...I think I must be feeling old because I cant stand the banging monotune noise kids today call music...all the songs sound the same to me.
@MrGoodtimesbadtimes I'm 54 - was in 11th grade, and although high school wasn't my favorite time, this song reminds me of all that was wonderful about those days.
@MrGoodtimesbadtimes i'm 51 and i think i know what you mean. i couldn't agree more. i remember exactly where i was the first time i heard this song. it was the definitive sound of the spring of 1974. and, yes, thanks to utube it'll live forever.
@MrGoodtimesbadtimes You might be surprised by some of the stuff on American Idol. Lately it's been Nat King Cole, Marvin Gaye, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Elton John and George Harrison. I could easily see this being sung in the finals.
@2009Denisem Oh I have heard of them I just never saw them. Bass player in our band of years ago turned me on to them.I remember jamming to I'm your captain.I sucked but I still had fun. Thanks
@2009Denisem This one band I would love to see before I die.Have been a musician most of my life but not so much lately. Have seen lots of bands but not this one.
Took me about 20 minutes to find this one, Thanx for the upload!! I remember this song from when it was new, but I had no idea it was Grand Funk Railroad, Cheers!!
Don't it make you feel young? The Rock of Chicago WLS belting this out on a hot summer day at the pool and scared to talk to the cutest girl there. Damn.
Mark saved his best for this..........ironically, a great time for me.....married June 1, 1974.........helps when you find your dream lady and have two daughters usually reserved for dreams........I paid my dues, and had MANY, MANY "bad times".
I can NOT believe 6 people didn't like this!! Go figure! Just like you, I LOVE this masterpiece and have been playing the hell out of it for days. Their very best, only followed by "Locomotion". And, the memories...bring tears to my eyes. How I wish I could bring back 1975. This was released March 22, 1975. Hit #4. Should have been #1. Long live GF.
This is one of those songs that you can't get tired of. Through out the years it has still held strong. Used to play this one and dance with my ex-wife. Good thing were still friends!!!lol
I don't know why, but I"ve been singing this song for several days! So naturally, I had to find it here on youtube! Now, I have to find "Sally"........remember the album cover??? They're all laying in open coffins in a funeral parlor.......creepy, but a cool song!! I had this album, too.......on 8-track tape playing in the '75 Pinto driving around town! good times............
I must have picked GOOD time to be in love.......June 1, 1974.......and still married to my dream lady........and added two miracle daughters on 1977 and 1980.
Great old tune......crusin the blvd, in my 69 gto in summer of 75 ..Times will never be like that again.....who ever grew up in that time were real lucky .....
And it shows Grand Funk's rock and roll roots. It sounds like an early 60s tune, with a bit of Janis Ian's Society's Child in the melody of the verses. And it's so cool that The Jayhawks even recorded it
@jellynoodls Has for 25 ++_years !! Listen to EVERYTHING from the 70s and 60s ... You will be incredibly rewarded!!!! Soul- bubblegum--rocx-one hit wonders-- canadian groups - disco etc !!! You will find and experience music you will carry to your grandchildren [If so desired ] Make it a life long jiourney !! Will not disappoint!!
An absolute classic - in every way, the simple perfect vocals and harmony. They just don't make them like this anymore. Gives me 9 year old chills. :)
Yes; You'll know it when it's right.....too many fall for the wrong sights and sounds.....when she asked me to marry her (one of several times) in Bermuda during Spring Break, 1969.....the most beautiful lady I'd ever met.......I KNEW it was the wrong time to be in love.....paying my way through college as a sailor, etc.......the later cum laude degree and the lady of my dreams set the stage for the right time..........
this is when mark went out with miss michigan

@klownn That's not a Axl Rose song. It's a song by Grand Funk sung by singer/frontman Mark Farner!

And it shows Grand Funk's rock and roll roots. It sounds like an early 60s tune, with a bit of Janis Ian's Society's Child in the melody of the verses. And it's so cool that The Jayhawks even recorded it
