I love this song, it used to get me into it all the time. Yes! there are many more Funk songs l like eg I am your Captain, etc etc etc. But this one, helped me learn to hold the whole chord and slide it up and down the keyboard just as much as I liked apart from of course being able to sneak in a couple of the cyclic Townshend power chord into it, making it a great stage song!
My introduction to Rock n Roll!! 1972 @ Dayton's Hara Arena. My first concert, and what a performance it was. Long live Mark, Don & Mel. Pure raw "foot stompin' good music!!

Well I don't think they got the press like Led Zeppelin did (which by the way this Heartbreaker is way better than Zep's Heartbreaker). Nowadays Zep is legendary while GFR is remembered only by loyal fans. GFR should have had a similar status and critical notice beyond We're an American band, but you ask the average classic rock listener and the aforementioned song is the only thing they associate with GFR. So lest appreciated of the biggies is accurate.
@rufus566 You present that point very well, so I'll agree with you there... Although I just really want to point out that they even beat the Beatle's record by selling out Shea Stadium in only 72 hours...
Your point is valid, but the record for "fastest sellout of tickets" needs to be put in context. First, the sellout was a lot smaller as the actual attendance record was not even close to being matched (only broken by Zep in 73' when GFR was in decline). Second, the mechanism used for selling tickets had drastically changed from 65 to 71. Also in 65 it had never been done before, by 71 it was common place. Good achievement, but GFR had flash in the pan success mostly domestic.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest early rock power trios! Why do so many people not know this band, you ask? Even in the 60's this music did not fit radio format. If your song went on longer than 4 minutes you never got airplay, or it was cut to shit. Even today on the nostalgia stations still cut songs like 'Inna Gadda da Vida' by Iron Butterfly. Now there's a great heavy rock voice - Doug Ingle. Praise be to almighty YOUTUBE for giving us a platform to expose and share so much great talent.
Grand Funk simply has more soul than anybody else. Their songs don't need to be complex compositions, Mark can bend a note and Don and Mel carry that note to perfection. When Mark goes into a lead, Don actually plays the guitar rhythms on the drums.

@RossGAnderson my very first album i forced my parents to buy was GFR live 1970 had to have it!! saw them on Don Kirshners "Rock Concert" 1969 never looked back. Why they never got the recognition they deserved I DONT KNOW !! one of the most influential bands of our time "the drumming garanteed to drive you up a wall" Not bad guitar work for a 200$ messenger! THANK YOU GOODNIGHT!!
As a 61 year old, former band singer, I stand by my comments, that comparing one band to another is senseless. I was recently called "assinine, clueless, and accused of being a teen with an overly active imagination" for my previous comment that was based on someone else's comment that "yeah they were good", but so and so was better. And fact remains, this is still one of my favorites.
I was @ this Concert in 1974! Wow what a concert! They turned out all lites except for black lites, the drummer was realy wild, all you could see was his arms moving and Mark going back and forth across the stage, all that dope and i still remember it as it was yesterday!!!!!
Was stationed in Bad Kreuznach Germany(1971) and they loaded up a deuce and a half with anyone wanting to go see Grand Funk. I hopped in the back and it seemed like we rode for hours to a destination I dont know still today??Most of us was already half drunk and high before and after but I remember the drummer doing a solo that went like a old train engine starting up going faster and faster for a long time. A lesson for all you young and up and coming drummers: look at Don's very BASIC drumset here. You don't need 14 drums and 21 cymbals to be EFFECTIVE !!
Back in the '70's, the bigger the bell-bottoms were, the better!! And you ironed them to make them look even cooler!! Brings back good memories, seeing & listening to them!
Please Americans, go and see more than the fucking Simpson. In the world exists more people than than bold idiot. People who really like rock and really enjoy it.The world sees America but America doesn't see the world, Please wake up!
They are a True POWER-HOUSE~ I was 13 and my older, wiser sister got me hooked on these guys and even my Mom Liked them and she was 45 at the time!! ROCK ON-DUDES!
There's a lesson in talent for you, kids! Take note!! Notice how many choreographed dancers they had on stage! Notice how many people on stage were actually playing an instrument and singing!! Notice how much guts went into performing JUST this one song!! Now, take a good look at any present day pop star's videos you can think of and ask the same questions. Take note of the answers you get!! Also ask yourselves how great the pop show would be WITHOUT the dancers and pre-recorded music!!
I'm 16 years old boy, from Chile, where Reggaeton and Pop music dwells. I really don't care about what people says to me when they look what I'm listening to. I listen Grand Funk Railroad since I was 7 years old and for sure Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple... etc., all these bands guided me to a better life, full of rock, power and emotions.
I say thanks to all of them, from the most inside of my heart!

Back in the '70's, the bigger the bell-bottoms were, the better!! And you ironed them to make them look even cooler!! Brings back good memories, seeing & listening to them!
