Oil companies are protected by drilling and refining regulations, media companies are protected by FCC regs, pharmaceutical companies are protected by the FDA.

The cost for new competition to enter the market are prohibitively astronomical. How many millions if not billions would it take to get the required approvals to build a small refinery for instance, if even possible now?
