  • From the NY Times. "one way to think of the data is to suppose he has a PSA test today. It leads to a biopsy that reveals he has prostate cancer, and he is treated for it. There is a one in 50 chance that, in 2019 or later, he will be spared death from a cancer that would otherwise have killed him. And there is a 49 in 50 chance that he will have been treated unnecessarily for a cancer that was never a threat to his life."

  • Prostate cancers are quite common but most are NOT fatal. Screening requires many hundreds of men to have potentially risky procedures to find just ONE case (which may not be not fatal). Brits only screen if someone asks for a screening or if there is a medical suspicion of the rarer aggressive type. Íts hardly surprisiing that most of those 50+ year old "cancer" patients in the US are still alive 5 years later.

  • Screening costs a lot of dollars, puts many men at risk needlessly, and causes a lot of worry and probably a lot of unneccssary treatments. The DEATH RATE from prostate caver in the UK is virtually identical to the DEATH RATE in the US. Its a classic case of why the US medical system costs more than twice the cost of the UK medical system per head and has no better outcomes. Looking at 5 year SURVIVAL rates is fairly meaningless in this kind of international comparison.

  • He is, of course, only quoting the numbers of Americans given treatment for cancer. I know several that didn't have insurance, so they were sent home to die.

In England and Canada, EVERYONE gets treated for cancer, not just those with private insurance.

Look it up if you doubt me.
