Japan and China were for most of their history very religious, and very powerful for most of their history. India, despite being quite poor now was a major cultural power for a much longer time than I like to comprehend, and India has always been very religious.

Even if an atheists is a stateist, that doesn't that they worship the government and think government should be all powerful.

Instead of a govt. insurance plan, why doesn't the govt. just help people pay for private insurance? And of course, the govt. would have to regulate the companies more closely.

I grew up there, Chicago, south side - not the suburbs, but inside city limits. My dad worked at Midway. Most of the gangbangers I saw in high school were Catholic, and had big Catholic-style tattoos. I'm not saying those kids killed anyone because of their religion. I'm saying that I doubt they were atheists.

There is no contemporary evidence to support the myths of christians ever being fed to lions. The romans did exucute people 'ad beastia' but this covered a large variety of animals, simply due to the fast declining crowd interest span, in the gory game events and public execution which was so overshown in roman society.

It is not so much that it is South Chicago and that it is not unusual for that area but the fact that this has gone on for centuries from the cattle baron wars to the gang warfare of the Mafia and the like which occurred everywhere. This sort of death (with respect to the victim) is nothing compared to the types of deaths meated out by the KKK (a devout Baptist Christian organisation). The difference? Simple. Glenn Beck needs more life experience below the waistline:
1) Beck dramatizes way to much. The weapon was most likely a board from a park bench, not a 200 lbs railroad tye. Only a moron would think that a kid could swing a railroad tye.
2) I reseach gangs, and I have articles dating back the 1950s (NYC and Chicago) of gang fights like this one. Prayers in schools were allowed at that time. Does Beck know this?
3) The kid with the camera did the right thing especially if he was scared

actually referring to crime level, poverty level, shorter life expectancy, higher infant death rates, and lower levels of education that have been shown to be higher in highly religious countries. so religion negatively affects a societies overall health and therefore that societies long term success. not to mention gets them in some dumbassed wars in some hot crappy deserts ;)

not implicitly no, however when that correlation can be repeatedly shown throughout human history as in the case of the inverse relationship between the success of a nation and its religiosity, it certainly raises questions of causality. granted it is more of a social success as opposed to an economic or military success, so perhaps a better term would be a nations societal health rather than success.

I disagree. The Catholic Church was very religious and of course they dominated the world for the better part of 1500 years. Japan and China were for most of their history very religious, and very powerful for most of their history. India, despite being quite poor now was a major cultural power for a much longer time than I like to comprehend, and India has always been very religious.
Religion is definatly not a good thing, but blaming a societies problems on it is exactly as ridiculous.

simply because a country or church has power and influence doesn't make their society healthy and therefore, in my opinion, successful. what i've been referring to are the studies that have shown that more religious countries have higher crime rates, shorter life expectancy, higher teen pregnancies, higher drug usage, etc. than less religious countries. whether or not this correlation shows direct causality or not has yet to be shown, but it goes to my original statement about highly cont.

It doesn't show directly causality, and claiming "religion negatively affects a societies overall health" is claiming that there is a causal relationship. It may very well be that a third factor causes both of those things, or it may be that in fact a higher crime rate and lower standard of living causes more religiousity. You ignore both of these possibilities throughout your posts, and lastly, once again, history does not support your original claim.

As someone who believes in God, but not in religion, I'd like to say I agree. I don't pray to God for every little thing because I imagine he has enough people doing that and I like to believe he helps those who help themselves I detest people who shove their beliefs down other's throats and say "My religion is right, and your going to hell for what you belive."
