I don't care what anyone has to say about his playing. You guys obviously don't know much about music if you don't notice how much "emotion" he puts into his BENDS!
Wisest words/wisest comment on this video is this: People who talk shit about Malmsteen are jealous of him and his amazing talent/speed..as for you people, keep sobbing your balls off
@xXxglassgowdreamxXx That's a gross oversimplification of Yngwie Malmsteen's talents, go listen to more of his songs, maybe you'll think otherwise then.
@xXxglassgowdreamxXx ok then what is he NOT good at in terms of mastery of the instrument? I favor many guitarists over him, including petrucci, tosin abasi, guthrie govan, and many others...but you're very wrong hes def one of the top 20 best fucking guitar players out there right now..hes not too versatile though ill give you that..but hes not just "playing fast" so dont be ignorant
@epic103 I'm saying I have yet to hear something with feeling or something calm like Satch, Vai, Gilmour, etc. All the things you listed are part of technique. I'm just saying is that he isnt very versatile. And if there are Yngwie songs that have some feeling in them list them, maybe I'll like them.
I searched "phrygian" to get ideas on how to play in the mode as I've had fun playing chords that follow it... first result and it does nothing for me.
Regardless of what Yngwie Malmsteen may or may not be, it doesn't change the fact that he has devoted a majority of his life to mastering his instrument and the (neo-classical?) genre; has done very well for himself as such, and does have a great amount of talent whether you like his style or not. I listened to him a lot back in the 80's but tired of it after his ego became louder than his amp.
I don't get why people that don't like Yngwie watch his videos and comment some shit talk all over the comment section. He's a better guitarist and more successful than you'll EVER be.. so fuck off.
My first Yngwie album, cassette I should say, was giving to me by a break dancer back in high school. I wasn't really friends with the guy, we just had a few classes together. He knew I played guitar and liked metal. He just walked up to me in class and said, " I think you will enjoy this." Well he was right! I'm not a hardcore fan of Yngwie's music but he truly is a master!
I'm sick of hearing "where is the emotion" from so many twats that think they know guitar. Who do you think you are to judge whether his playing is emotionless or not? Did you ever think that maybe Yngwie is the one feeling the emotion with his playing? That's what truly counts as a musician and not what other people's opinions are. He will do what ever he wants because that's his style, and he LIKES his style. If you want what you call "emotion" then listen to Eric Clapton or something
@Headbanger9000 In the noob universe slow is emotional fast is mechanical...dont try to reason with them mate.Blues relics that barely know two patterns of the pentatonic scale think they have "freedom" and guys like YJM that play anything are..."constrained and repetitive".Someone has to make them listen to classical music sometimes.Pentatonic isnt the entire universe noobies...Step out of your little safety box..there is a whole world out there...
Twiddling!! Technically and dextrously amazing but where's the melody? Where's the lead that's going to become a memorable lick all guitarists want to play? I never want to slag off fellow musicians as I feel we're 'bothers' under the same love of playing guitar but I do despair when obvious talent could be so better used. No offence to anyone.
@Cirocoleman check out this guys work from the 80's. he wasn't always so cold man. His classic stuff from back in the day is really really melodic and soulful man.
@Locomikey666 emotion has nothing to do with playing fast or slow for that matter.Try listen to some classical music and then come and tell me it has no emotions....its full of scales and arpeggios....but i guess a little more distortion and ..hair and you suddenly...emotionless lol.
@Svin4y wow i do that all the time it really works since i get so consumed in it, guitar keeps me out of trouble too. wow someone out there who relates

EXACT SAME NOTES, Different order. This is how you apply music over a progression. He's using phrygian, therefore it's Em, because phrygian is a minor mode. ok I still dont know what a Phrygian is.... it is supposed to be some kind of music used for Spanish music, but here a hear a typical Malmteen salad.....
@IronPump89 Phrygian is a musical mode. You can wiki this for more info, but it is basically the E Minor scale with a diminished 2nd. The scale you get that way is the same as C Major. @kbkbabbie but E phrygian is E F G A B C and E harmonic minor E F# G A B C D#.. if he was using E harmonic minor it will sound out but it doesnt?? isnt it?
@kbkbabbie He doesn't play regular E phrygian, it's E phrygian dominant as he uses the notes E F G# A H C D - it's basically an A harmonic minor scale starting from its fifth, E.
@IronPump89 its just the major scale shape moved up a couple tones... but still played over E. all he's doing is playing what would be G# major scale over an E major backing or bass line... or at least that is my understanding of it...
i would actualy have to say that his style is the easyest to master... he uses scalloped frets. which is harder to play fast on. and he plays with mostly tremlo and stecoto picking and a few sweeps.. and a regular neck is easyer to play fast on. and he picks almost every not in this song.. there are alot of harder styles to master.. in my opinion
its called heavy E phrygian because all his songs and all he plays are just scales. not creativity, just technique. incredible technique. no soul or songwriting gift though. might as well be a robot.
I'm a huge fan, and love this mode as well, but I really think Yngwie is the most INEFFECTIVE teacher via video on the planet.... Most videos are about a 15 second conversation about the subject then him showing off on the guitar. He RARELY actually teaches anything, and it's a shame because he's clearly a wealth of knowledge.

wanna play like this? you gotta be able to have huge determination, practice shitloads, like... guitar playing will be your only hobby lol. be talented... you know what never fucking mind, nobody will never be able to play this awesome.
yngwie is one of my favorite guitar players, but he's so good that he sucks because when he plays its all about him, not the singer, drummer or the bassist, that goes for all the other great guitar players too like george lynch, michael angelo batio, and any others you can think of. take for example: who else is in yngwie"s band? he has had different people since he started because its all about him. its insane and cool to watch. but his songs suck and nobody jsut wants to hear solos constantly
but will it blend?

Randy kicks Yngwie´s Ass in 18 thousand parts. But Yngwie is pretty cool, that´s inquestionable

yngwie is one of my favorite guitar players, but he's so good that he sucks because when he plays its all about him, not the singer, drummer or the bassist, that goes for all the other great guitar players too like george lynch, michael angelo batio, and any others you can think of. take for example: who else is in yngwie"s band? he has had different people since he started because its all about him. its insane and cool to watch. but his songs suck and nobody jsut wants to hear solos constantly
