Very little government funding goes into the alternative sources compared to the oil funding. The benefits from that oil will not be fully reached until 2030, and would do very little to impact gas prices. I support offshore drilling partially, since it would help remove dependance on foreign oil, but that doesn't diminish in the least the need to develop alternative energy.

A mutual cease fire for negotiations seems like a better first step than a all-out pull of forces.

When someone enlists in the army, they are doing this on their own accord. They know that they can be stationed anywhere in the world for any period of time. This is why McCain isn't concerned with bringing them home. This is what the army does, they go places and stay their for periods of time. What he is concerned with is bringing down casualties.
