I have been studying Moe's swing for almost 3 years and I am beginning to understand how simple yet magical it is. I have been hitting straighter more consistent shots, but it took me awhile to get his methods thru my head. It takes some time to break old habits, but once you get used to it, it is simply a thing of beauty!!
From the USA Today (2004): In 50 years, Moe Norman had 17 holes in one, nine double eagles, won more than 50 tournaments and set more than 30 course records. Not the farthest hitter. Not the greatest trick-shot artist or putter — putting bored him. Just the most stupefying accurate golfer on the planet. Norman played competitive golf more than 50 years, and witnesses say he played 11 of those years — that's about 230,000 golf shots — without hitting a ball out of bounds.
this swing takes some practice because you have to break several habits from the "conventional" swing. As far as tee to green full shots, this is the best swing I have ever done. never before have friends been impressed, because in my group if you shoot even par, you are getting ready to pay out of your wallet. I have hit more fairways and more greens with this swing than ever before. I have had more egls and brds in the past 5 rounds of with this swing than I have in the previous 20 rounds.
moenorman, org has a great 20 min vid of moe out on the range explaining his swing.click the tab on the bottom right hand corner.best on internet of him explaining his swing
just put this dumb guy on that dumb guy... every time.. right down the middle.. hahah this guy was great, if you see some other videos of him he says some really wacky shit, hell of a player though
Moe Norman's swing is just like a door opening and closing, and he's just the door hinge. As long as the door -- the clubshaft -- doesn't break down it's a perfect inside - out swing every single time which will make the ball go straight every single time.
jst my opinion so nobody do any dummy spits yeah.... personally i think its an ugly swing that looks like half the 80yr olds at any golf club. hell i can do that and it'l go go straight, cept it goes about 150 meters.. might as well use an 8 iron.
bigjaw; His swing is pure genius. The key to his accuracy was a shortened backswing with tremendous action in the lower body. I am 54 years old and use a similar abbreviated backswing and hit it easily 275 to 280 with the driver. You ain't got a clue what your talking about!
well mate i actually play off a 1 hcp and i 2 can hit it 280 + yards. i never said it wasnt effective, i just think its ugly......have a look at furiks swing (no idea how 2 spell his name) its pretty ugly as well, but it gets the job done.........but i dunno his drives look like they might be on the 250 yard line but they arent long........and theres no 'tremendous action' in his lower body. maybe when he was younger but i have no clue about a young moe.
I like Norman and his method has a lot of merit. Having said that, I have to correct you on one matter: When Norman was younger, he did NOT have a short swing. there is footage of him on YouTube from when he was in his prime, and he got the club to at least parallel. the short swing you see here is a function of age and lost flexibility, not design.
Just because he 'owned it 'doesnt mean it isnt ugly. but thats my oppinion. But i think if anyone actually considers this a nice looking golf swing they are nieve. but that too is my opinion. i agree that he hits all the right positions, and it is an effective swing, but it doesnt look that great. and please dont go telling me its the score that matters, because i know it is.
when it comes to a golf swing and using the word "ugly" I submit that most golfers judge "ugliness" by the result of the shot (on a consistent basis) - your usage of the word "ugly" in this case would imply that moe's swing produced bad results - i further submit that most pro golfers would love their "ugly" swing, if it meant they could have consistent results - who the hell likes a pretty swing and have the ball slice ?
So then you're calling Ben Hogan's swing ugly too? Because the two people who own their swings are Moe Norman and Ben Hogan. Not in the way they look, but the sense that, they can hit it straight and pure every time. It's not how, it's how many, and as Moe would say, "you're putting this dumb guy on that dumb guy into that dumb guy and onto that dumb guy, nobody knows how to hit a golf ball!".
just shut the fuck up....i dont care if u havent posted about moe's swing in a year....hes the only guy that has ever lived to figure out how to hit a golf ball dead straight and flush EVERY TIME HE HIT IT.....he is the best ballstriker ever and its not even close...he was well ahead of even guys like Hogan in the ballstriking department....why are u offerrng up ur asinine opinion about how u thought his swing was "ugly"...nobody cares that u think its ugly....
Man, what a great video. Do you have the rest of it? Or know where I can purchase it? It's too bad we don't have more footage of Mr. Norman. What a tremendous swing he had.
I love Moe Norman. I have his dvd but this is not on it. I wish we hade so much golf on tv like you guys in the states. Thanks for sharing this. Rob from Holland
Moe Norman was a savant because he had a brain injury as a kid. This changed his whole personality and he became obsessed with hitting a golf ball. He was very strong and it is known that he lifted weights to make his Pop Eye forearms. You can not hit the ball with the swing of Norman and do it as he did unless you hit millions of golf balls. There is no substitute for practice.
guys the swing looks weird... but what is the proper/optimum way to manipulate a golf club? If you can answer that you should become a golf teacher and earn millions on the PGA tour. Moe has a set of compensations that allow him to hit the ball straight, Eldrick has these comps, vijay, ernie, Phil, etc all have unique comps that allow them to hit a ball straight... to some extent. They make compensations BECAUSE of there faults, but you have to admire the way some people compensateeg.sergio,Furyk
That "completely awful set-up and swing" belongs to a "joker" who's been named by a whole bunch of people better than you as the straightest and most consistent striker of the ball that ever was. Beauty is as beauty does.
Sure, just based on aesthetics--which are the aesthetics we're used to seeing. The finish, particularly, isn't exactly pleasing to the eye. But then, if people like Snead and Trevino said your son was the best striker of a ball they'd ever seen, called him a genius, etc., you'd say, "Play on, son, and when you start cashing checks, don't forget who drove you to the course when you were young."
@seanhaz : Moe's swing like many things Moe did was exaggerated but it worked for him and nobody hit the ball straighter than he did. Moe could have cared less about how it looked. He was interested in results.

there goes moe norman, the best that ever was - he should be more recognized as a Canadian sports legend and golfing legend in general - I took up "natural golf" a few years ago and have been hitting it long and straight ever since
macspectrum; I have been studying Moe's swing and what he says about it. I have incorporated the pendulum idea and where he says he plays into his legs and NOT on top of them!! I took these swing thoughts to the driving range and I am now hitting a beautiful little draw or straight depending on my follow-thru. I just can't get over how much easier it is to swing this way!! It is absolutely brilliant!!

The purest ball striker we've ever known. Idiots who joke about Moe just don't know the game and have no appreciation for his story or his talent.

they have good reasons behind that swing. Golf is about hitting that ball squarely into that 4.5" hole, not a fashion show.
