  • pure feelings :)

  • OMG you just ripped my soul to pieces. Philip Glass is our greatest living composer

  • This is very beautiful (and I'm a musician)... I honestly had shivers around 5:25, those chords are incredible. Nice playing mate.

  • i can't even describe how this makes me feel

  • Wow. You've obviously been practising : ) I've started piano recently to learn my favourite songs and a bit more about music. There are some decent arrangements available if you look up 'daily music sheets' that are free, but that encourage you to buy the artist's music to support them. (I'm not a shill, I just can't afford to buy sheet music if I don't know it's accurate). I think Glass' The Hours is included.

If I didn't know better, I'd say this was right from the movie soundtrack.

  • No award is worthy of Philip Glass. His towering passion and endless genius is far beyond any mere human reward. Listen with eyes closed to reap most fully.

  • beautiful!

  • Très beau ! ^^ On dirait vraiment la version originale ! Superbe !

  • what kind of piano do you have?

  • @WalksBehindTheRose the piano is a Steinway Grand owned by my university XD

  • You can order the hours songbook on amazon that's where I got it. $12-

  • does someone have the score for this piece? i'd love to read it ...

  • Has a little Michel Legrand in it.

  • ... !

  • Thank you ! I have no musical talent,,,I so envy those of you who do and appreciate the gift you share with us. Keep playing,,,,when music dies,,,the soul withers.

  • just beautiful

  • is philip glass easy to play by ear? I have never played the piano, but it seems to me like the patterns are fairly easy to replicate....

  • Amazing rendition - fantastic work...

  • hahaha...i think u played better than the original version. I like it. :)

  • @RX1986 better than the original? :/ Why, thank you, but I don't think my full-of-mistake playing is better than the original :P

  • @stevtomato musically-wise, its better than the original. :)

  • @stevtomato certainly not better, but definately as good, thank you. btw, the fact that you play this, by ear...idk, magnificent.

  • @stevtomato ....I loved it. It was really great, so don't say it wasnt....I mean 235,823 views and 547 likes can't be wrong now can they?

  • @VampireDemonQueen :) Thanks!

  • 6 ppl have Bieber Fiever

  • In case some here did not know, yes; Philip Glass' music score for the movie, The Hours did win an Oscar for the best movie musical score 2002. The movie would not have been the same without the Glass' musical score. I rented the movie just to hear the musical score but enjoyed the movie too! All the actors did a superb job. We also used two Glass pieces for a short independent film titled Solar Prophet (in Youtube)

  • Amazing performance! An all of this played by ear, bravo! I hope to learn to play like this one day! :)

  • @denbal87 Sure you can =) just keep practicing xD

  • so intense!!!!!!!!

    especially after 5:15...

    great job!

  • That is totally beautiful. Bravo.

  • sorry, but it is not correct! :( but it is still beautiful! :)

  • @heymozart I know it isn't correct... but uh, sorry to say, the video I listened to this from wasn't correct too... that's why I copied the mistakes...

  • @heymozart Skimming the music as I listened, it's close enough for me! :P

  • @PhoenixBlackthorn Haha, cheers :) I made some stupid mistakes in transcriptions though =(

  • @stevtomato Hey, but if next to no one else notices, then it's still awesome! ^.^

  • amazinngggg

  • Magnificent!

  • I learned to play this, but it's nowhere near as engaging, ethereal, and simply beautiful as this! I listen to it if I'm sad, happy, anxious, excited, thoughtful, grouchy...doesn't matter.

  • @manderson610 Thanks a lot :) it makes me happy, that you like it. I'm sure you can play it better with practice and just play it when you feel really emotional xD It helps =P

  • On it's own I don't care much for it but as a score to the movie "The Hours" it was amazing. It worked so well and the film would not have been the same without it.

  • Amazing, I could listen to this all day.

    I'd kill for a score. ;<

    Thumbs Up!

  • Such a Wonderful thing, the stars began to dance and there start Sunflowers growing on the Moon.

  • Well done - if you played this without having the score to refer to then you have a real, natural ear for music - a gift- and you are very lucky indeed. Enjoyed listening to this very much. : )

  • Amazing. You did this all by listening to other versions?

  • @MclarenF1rocket Yeah, I listened to Branca Parlic's video... I put the link on my description box.

  • amazing interpretation... i´m in love of Philip Glass music

  • beautiful !!!!! THANKS

  • Thanks you.

  • bravo!!

  • love it!

  • Tis beautiful.

  • MERAVIGLIOSA!

  • This makes me remember and I cry.

  • yawn his most boring score

  • There is not enough stars in the sky to rate this music with.

  • Bravissimo, my love!! I LIKE TOO MUCH the combination of THE ELECTRIC&analogPIANO!!

  • This is the movie that I "listen" from the beginning till the end

  • Beautiful music really well played. Thank you!

  • nice improvisation ;). Where could i get the sheet music of this song?thank you

  • Hey 'Maybe this Sunday'. Your pianistic playing does credit to the music and the instrument. The tuning adds something to it.

  • HOW THE HELL IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS MUSIC DIDN'T TAKE OSCAR AND GLOBE??!?!?!I heard the music of "Frida"(it won academy award-globe-grammy for it's music) and is NOTHING,NOTHING compared to this diamond! They must be sooo idiots!

  • @dicesh I know, right? This is such a simple but great work!

  • @stevtomato because ppl only thing pop is music, crap like britney spears and beyonce. sigh, i will always love the hours & philip glass.

  • @dicesh you should listen frida again

  • @dicesh

I understand perfectly how you feel. As far as music composition and performance, the plastic executives are ruling the roost but can't play a simple G chord.

Please see 'Andrew White - Wild Eagle' on you tube and you'll understand what I mean.

  • @dicesh would have to be among the favourite collective works of Philip Glass

  • @dicesh I admire your passion and concur with your statement...

  • Thanks for posting. Glass' music is among the top of my favorites.

  • love it so much xxxxxxxxxxx

  • Really great. I love hearing good musicians play music. Set a mic and go - fantastic.

  • BRAVO MASTER!!

  • Hey,do u have the the score of The hours? i really want to play it but i can't find the score of it through internet. If u have, can u send it to me through e-mail? thx a lot,u play it really great!

  • @Msnataliealexandra Broekmans en van Poppel have it online.

  • That other guy's name is Konstantin Soukhovetski. I think your articulation and pedalling are better than his. I prefer your version to Branka's because of your momentum and choice of tempi.

  • Nice recording. compares very well to Branka and another guy who used to have his version up but has since removed it. Well done. This recording has prompted me to listen to your other stuff

  • @MrTonykulas Thanks! I really appreciate that.

  • @stevtomato No worries mate. With talent like yours praise is inevitable

  • beautiful. thank you.

  • Guy, today i went to sea, I was listening to the sounds of big waves and to ur music at the same time!!! i should note it is awesome and so relaxing

  • ♥♥ toll!

  • stev..... excellent performance... you made my day bro!

  • One day I will play this like you, one day.

  • @UnifiedPerfection I'm looking forward to that day! Put it up as a video response! =)

  • @UnifiedPerfection Wish U All the Best :)

  • Philip Glass is a genius, could you feel the magic?

Absolutely beautiful piece of art !

  • I am no piano expert but I think you played this wonderfully. It is very moving.

  • il film è stupendo, la musica sublime...

  • How hard?

  • this was playing on my grandfathers funeral, so i think it's really beautiful but it makes me sad =(

  • Stevtomato: I think your interpretation is beautiful... I think you know how to give the tone to Philip Glass' music. The piano is in fact slightly out of tune, but I think it ads some strange quality to it... I liked very much your playing

  • Thanks for uploading your stuff. I love this music, and I am using it to concentrate while I'm doing some chess exercises. Good playing!

  • Excelente pieza musical.... y en general la musica de Philip Glass es muy buena... un verdadero maestro..

  • this movie should have won the award for best original score..

  • Beautiful!!!

  • bloody love that crashign perfect cadence aruond 3:37

  • you've played this brilliantly

  • nicely done. I have The Hours sheet music and have been learning them :)

  • Great music! Im so happy for listening this piece. Thank you.

  • Your much too hard on yourself on what this "could of been.' ( Sound, mistakes, etc. ) I am not a musician myself but I love music (at least) as much as any musician ! This is very moving ....

  • it's great... I love it.. and it touches me.. Thank you...

  • wait hold up! i totally thought this was from the soundtrack or something!! so musically played.

absolutely beautiful. props props props =)

  • Thanks! =) I thought it could be better! There were a few mistakes, including the miking. Oh well.

    I'm glad you like it.

  • i actually like the slight out-of-tune piano; it sounds a bit like a honky-tonk piano, which for me has associations of innocence mixed with a gently aching nostalgia. beautiful emotional sensitivity you play this with!

  • Ah, yeah, but I think I'd rather it played on a tuned piano =P

  • Nice! I can feel the strong emotion.

Is it possible for me to have the score? Thanks

  • Thanks! Sorry, I've lost the score I made. You could buy them though.

  • awesome!!!

  • Ya know something? I've been watching/listening to this and the whole time I had no idea you were the one playing thise cover.

Great job! I really love how you played this song. Regardless of mistakes, whatever they might be, I still love listening to this. Once again, good job. :D

  • Haha, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed that! That's what makes me happy and record more stuff.

  • OMG This is a cover?? I was sure this was the real thing!

What a talent! I've always admired pianists.

  • Haha, thanks! I'm flattered, there were quite a few mistakes and stuffs, though!

  • A few mistakes, but you have a lovely use of dynamics and a clear emotional connection with the piece. Lovely!!

  • Haha, thanks =)

  • Que maravilha! Philip Glass é extraordinário! Sempre que escuto esse tema, eu me emociono!

  • love it, thanks for your cover, can i have my heart back now?

  • Thanks =D I'm glad you do. Your heart should still be there though... :|

  • The book is even better :)

Like your playing... there're some mistakes tho

  • I tried reading the book but I found it boring =(

Yeah, my playing is always full of mistakes... Probably because I'm not a great pianist and I sight read all the time. Not a good excuse, but oh well.

  • @stevtomato It's very enjoyable though, so you don't have to apologise :) Thank you for the music ! :)

  • Honestly this song makes me want to shoot myself.

  • Well, it is quite a moody song. Just don't shoot yourself though =P

  • @stevtomato thanks for the reply. I can't decide whether it is meant to be pessimistic or optimistic. Gonna keep listening and try to decide. Of course I haven't seen the movie so that could be why.

  • No worries, madmanmemo.

Pessimistic or optimistic... Hmm, I'm not sure tbh, I think it's neither. The movie is great though!

  • The bad thing about our species being inteligent and living easy is that it gives us time to think

  • @ChrisJK94

The bad thing is that that's something to think about...

  • Great music, full of passion, magnetic sounds

  • wow you played this!? good job!

  • nice

  • wooooooooooooooooooooooow!!!!! that is the kind of expression that gives the rhythm of life and living! fantastic!!!

  • Your really talented.

  • Wow really talented!

  • Superb interpretation, greatly impressed. Are you familiar with Branka Parlic's performances of these pieces?

  • Thanks! Yeah, that's how I learnt it... I transcribed her performance... And I think I transcribed some of her wrong notes too haha... But it was great.

  • Ahh thats good to know - and yes you did transcribe it wrong in a few places, but the changes you made still remain very idiomatic to the style of Glass, so only die hard losers like me would notice. Great job again :)

  • I did too, haha! But I'm sure she played some mistakes too! I bought the score a bit later and found out a couple of mistakes... lol. Oh well.

Eh, I didn't know you play the Harpsichord too. Me too, but I'm more like an imposter... lol

  • Great music!

  • a brilliant modern composer

  • amazing.. this is amazing, brilliant Stevtomato!! you have the great talent!

  • 1:51 one forgets

  • Ohh i see...:) Well this is in fact the first and only video ive commented on, simply because I agree, when you're this talented you should have people telling you so 24/7!

  • Haha, you're too nice. Thanks a lot, and I appreciate the comment =)

  • You're right, that comment made me sound so selfish...You should be very proud of this :)

  • No I said the worng thing! i meant, if it weren't for people like you to tell people like us, we wouldn't know that we've been doing the right thing :) sorrry about that!

  • This isn't the actual sheet music is it... I've been learning it (struggle with timing of section 2). It is a truly beautiful song. I also noticed you fiddle with your tempo and dynamics... I keep getting told not to do that, so lame. But yeah I can certainly hear differences in the music... notes missing etc. But still very well played.

  • Nah, I couldn't find it, so I transcribed it myself from a video. And well, I didn't really think of tempo changes too much, I just did it like how I'd do it... Probably, wrong, but oh well xD

  • This film broke my heart in the most beautiful ways...But the music put the pieces back together. I have never felt less significant and yet somehow more important at the same time. Listening to this is like staring at the stars and realising how small you are...Then realising that if it wasn't for you or people like you there would be no one to see the stars at all. This piece summarises life- Beautiful yet tragic. And your piano playing is breath-taking. Thankyou =)

  • Thanks! It's also not for the people like you, people like me feel like we've been doing the right thing.

  • Realy beautyful! <3

  • Wait, Philip Glass composed the music for The Hours? No wonder I loved that soundtrack so much. :D

  • never heard music of so astonishing beauty

  • Beautiful!! Keep them coming! Well done!

  • Lovely!!!!

  • Poorly played? this is georgeous, really! congratulations!:)

  • me llega hasta el alma esta cancion me fascina

  • Love the film. Love the music!! <3

  • this is absolutely beautiful. so soft. you are very very talented.

  • heyyy where did you get this version!!!!! its beautifull!!!!!!!!!!! i was lokking for everywhere

  • Umm, I listened to a performance of this online and then transcribed it myself. I have it memorised by now....

  • I have you playing this on my ipod, and it calmed me down so much today before my Math exam! I'd love to hear you play Morning Passages. Well the whole score really as I love your piano playing more than the real thing. Thanks!

  • Aw thanks! :D

Hmm, I don't know where my score is now... lol, I might have left it in Sydney, but yeah, I will one day =P

  • Thats My Bro...hahaha...^^

    TWO THUMBS UP!

  • Wow Steve... Your seriously such a wonderful piano player... T_T Again move to DARWIN DAMMIT! :P :P :P

  • lol nooo! I'm just average.

But yeah, too bad, I can't go to Darwin. Darwin doesn't want me T_T

  • it's really wonderful.. i love this peace and a very good execution..

  • Thank you! :) I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • I love listening to this. So peaceful and melancholy. The Hours is one of the best films I've ever seen.

  • beautiful.

  • Yes Steve! Mo vids of u!

    :'(

  • :( yes indeed

  • wonderfully retrospective and full of energy, spirit and a soul

  • so touching if uv seen that movie
