obviously Barbra win if we compare she whit the others singers that sung this song, but, but, for me, in my humble opinion, I prefer Cher´s version, because it was the first that I heard, and is even more powerfull than this
Sreisand does incredible justice to anything she sings,,,one of the greatest voices/singer/performer/song stylists of the century. Her version, except for Dionne's is the greatest,
Talent like this graces the human race (if we're lucky) but once in a generation. Imagine how it feels to Barbra to hear how beautiful and flawless her own voice is as she sings. We'll not soon see another like Miss Streisand!
@PaoloNYC As for you? VAFFANCULO! As for Streisand she needs to be careful about risk-taking these days. Her voice is nearly gone. Allora, mangia merda! :)
Hi, Skipper. My comment was regarding Dionne Warwick's version-- her's is still my favorite. Barbra's take is a little too dramatic for me. Like you, I don't like Whitney's version either. I'll leave the phrasing analysis to you.
I'm a Striesand fan but she shouldn't have taken on this challenging song after it had been perfectly rendered by Cilla. Cilla made it her own and that is how it will stay.
A song as great as this will always be wonderful left in the capable hands of any great singer. I love this, and Dionnes version also. But to me this song will always belong to Cilla Black. I just think her joy of singing the song is captured in the performance more than any other I have heard. No disrespect intended to any other performer. Every performer has their signature song. This one belongs to Cilla.
@stevesg92 I would have chosen whitney or barbra as the best female pop singers ever until I discovered Sissel on youtube last year...give her a listen and let me know what you think!
@CattailsandRoses Have you seen the Barbra Streisand 1993/1994 concert? I must say that Sissel has a beautiful voice.. very powerful... but I think that no one has the power of Streisand's voice... both Whitney and Sissel sound/sounded great live but in the concert above when her voice goes up up up it's even more power, more in command. That is why she is known as the greatest singer of all time.
@CattailsandRoses thanks for sharing that video... search " the man that got away barbra streisand".. it's live..
this video truly shows the powerful of her voice watch the whole thing ... and keep in mind she was already 52 here... when comparing singers like Sissel keep in mind that you should compare Barbra's voice when she was younger.
@stevesg92 thanks for the feedback--you defend your favorite very strongly and politely, too. I think people who appreciate artists like Barbra and Sissel are of course civilized, too! I will listen to the videos you recommended; especially looking forward to the one with Ray Charles. I also recommend that you check out Sissel's Like An Angel Passing Through My Room--oriinally by one of the ABBA singers and also by Madonna--anyway the song's beauty is fully revealed when Sissel performs it
@stevesg92 regarding the man that got away--for me, I want to listen to singers who get all the meaning of the song and who match their performance to the mood of the lyrics..Big Band performances of heartbreak songs do not really serve the song,in my opinion.. Take a listen to Jeff Buckley, singing the same song,as if to a female friend who has just been dumped..He was a song's best friend!!
@CattailsandRoses I completely agree with you... maybe her interpretation of the song was not genuine enough or didn't catch the mood as much as another singer might have like you said Jeff Buckley...but you must admit that if we were talking singly about the power of vocals you can't beat that wouldn't you say?
@CattailsandRoses oh here's another great video.. type Ray Charles and Barbra Streisand Crying time.... it's a great example of the power of her voice
I love Cher's version. It would be hard to compare the two because they are very different, especially the voices. I prefer Cher, nothing against Barbra, this version is beautiful as well :)
I'm a Streisand fan, but I prefer both Dionne's most famous recording and Cher's fantastic work on the soundtrack. Dionne's version is a classic. The only time I ever saw a standing ovation at the Oscars for any singing performance is when Dionne sang this in 2000 with Michael Caine in the front row (after winning his second Oscar on his feet too). This version is just too much-- overblown.
@OoYesIKnowOoYesIKnow.I have always loved Cher and like Dionne. But,as far as singers go putting them in the same category with Streisand is like comparing a 24-karat diamond to a cubic zirconia. For me,Streisand at her best, when she was 25-30 years younger,is probably the most beautiful voice I have ever heard.
Cher's version? How can anyone even put her version in the same category ? It's crap! Can't figure out how her version made it to the film! Shame on you Burt ! (if you had anything to do with the the films version ) Even Cilla's is better than Cher's.
i wish this song was given less Rubato by its performers. I'd love it to be sharp and crisp. I love the song though. And Babs just makes me smile....every time :D
@murbuzz Agreed! The excessive rubato really ruins the beautiful unique flow of the harmonically sophisticated melody...but hey...it's Streisand! A true goddess.
@tenorismo have to put cilla's version behind cher's version over the film's closing credits, it's a bit more passionate and raw. streisand's version is too clinical/antiseptic for my taste
I have heard many sing this song. This is by far the absolute best rendition of this classic song I have ever heard. It is perfection. Streisand is simply the best.
This is a very straightforward and touching version of Alfie. There is , however, something missing in the smooth utter poise of this rendition; it is almost banal. I love her vocal tenderness, but I prefer other versions.
For as long as I can remember I have idolized this woman and her talent. I am now a 56 year old that still cries when I hear her sing just the right song... She will always be my #1 and you know there are others that think the same... Just watch Glee sometime!
ALMIGHT GOD HAS TOUCHED HER VOICE... ITS BEAUTIFUL!!!! HER TONE QUALITY IS SUPERB AND HER CONTROL IS OUTSTANDING.....HER ARTICULLATION IS WONDERFUL AND THE LYRICS ARE SUNG WITH MEANING!!!!
@mikesterSTLMO Yes I am sure Dionne Warwick could barely hold the mike after this one lol. Maybe Dionne having the biggest hit of anyone recording the tune. I love Streisand's voice, it is beautiful. Maybe Streisand felt that same way after Gladys Knight recorded "The Way we Were" now that's is a powerful cover.
Barbra tore it up but the best version of this song will always be from Dionne Warwick... A little trivia, Cher song the original song for the movie. Safe to say she didn't tear it up...
I like this version- I didn't know Dionne Warwick sued Burt- I'd love to know the details of that lawsuit! Cher's version is great- not often heard, and very underappreciated.
Bacharach said he wrote this for her! No wonder Dionne sued him years later - LOL thanks for posting; LOVE this version; totally don't agree about a weak ending; not all ballads have to end with a crescendo; this is the beauty of Barbra - she never recorded "traditionally" and the next time she sings it, guess what, it will be entirely different
i just wish she really punctuated the big notes, the climax to the song, and she's got the lung for it. i love her. and actually thought she didnt give it all she had, sort of holding back!! but still a good version
yes, cher originally sung it for the movie, but cilla also did a version, which in my opinion is one of the better ones. Also, have a listen to stevie wonder jazzing it on his harmonica, it's beautiful.
This is really overdone, even for her. This melody is already so distinctive that all her styling seems superfluous. This is one of those songs where you just need to hit the notes and let the words speak for themselves.
Well, I think this is a beautiful and simple version, but zolluuu, you're entitled to your own opinion, and don't be too annoyed if you get a thumbs down; you know how people can be when someone says something out of the way.. :)
Lovely- it's easy and mellow and not a sad and haunting version like the others, but it's so beautiful who cares? ;-) La Streisand holds it back for this ballad and only attempts to break it out around 1:50
The original movie theme is by a young CHER. Dionne had the big hit. This version by Babs is beautiful, the ending third of it is tailor made for her voice.
Streisand at her singular best. During this period (roughly same as when she filmed On a Clear Day) her voice - in my view - had matured into its career best. Gone were the smatterings of a young girl's attempts at improvisation.
Here we see Barbra coming into her voice in all its unbelievable talent and irrefutable beauty. Her timing is perfect as is her intonation. Barbra intellectualizes her singing adding (incredibly) more to an alread unprecented talent. Thanks for posting this.
@Shubael1809 Her voice had definitely matured by this point primarily because of the hormone shift after her pregnancy. Yes, she had definitely tamed some of her more wild vocal inclinations, choosing instead to caress these songs. During this period, she was still focusing on orchestral ballads (her best genre). She hadn't yet gotten into the 'rock' genre, which didn't vocally work most of the time.
@abigguitar Thanks abiguitar. Yes. You've nailed it. I agree with what you say about Streisand and orchestral ballads. Bar none the sound track to On a Clear Day showcases her at her vocal peak. I wish she'd not wasted so much of the 70s on the "Stoney End" sort of thing... But she came home again. In recent years her version of "Emily" is pretty damned good.
i had once liked her chubbiness, sexy size D appeal, charming long nose, gorgeous smile, embracing ways, and her wide long line voice. But that was once a longtime ago.
Another fantastic cut from one of Barbra's most underated albums. Guess it shows that even a superstar as big as Barbra has to promote new projects; especially back then when all we had was radio and TV.
Baraba is one of the greatest voices we have ever heard. She sings each word and note with such clarity. Her runs are strong and with great passion. This such a tender song in that we do not have this quaitiy today.
Dont really care for this version, she tries to hard to make it jazzy or make it something its not, just sing the song. Whitney's version is probably the best rendition i've heard live
yes, women have the right to choose, and so do children, but they cant choose since they cant talk.... i think the point is that killing the unborn is really criminal. On the other hand, I do like Barbra's voice.
Opera680 has an ax to grind. Why don't you allow ALL people the freedom to do with their bodies as they please? A child should not be born to a woman who does not want it. Period.
Oy, all this tawk ovah God and she is just singing a pretty sawng.
I love Babs, but this is Dionne Warwick's song. Bab's version is overstylized for my taste. I love Streisand's voice, and if she had recorded it later, she might have felt the power of the words, not just the melody.
I have to agree...Barbra is such a beautiful singer but she overdid this one. Like you said, I think she would have understood it more if she wasn't so young. Hey maybe she'll sing it again someday!
Love the photographic work in that album and can remember when it first came out! I was 14 and could not afford to buy it but would go into the record store and look at the sleeve and wonder how it sounded!

Dear Ernie,
Do you think that Dionne Warwick and Cher and Barbara, would ever get into a ring and fight it out to see who is the best singer of this song?
.
Barbara probably has the sharpest fingernails, and Cheer could do head-butting, but Dionne probably would out-thump the others; like you say.
Did I mention Cilla Black, she could easily take a piece out of Dionne, with her buck-teeth weapon.
.

Lovely- it's easy and mellow and not a sad and haunting version like the others, but it's so beautiful who cares? ;-) La Streisand holds it back for this ballad and only attempts to break it out around 1:50

Love the way she sings this wonderful song! She puts you in a mellow and nice mood.

The original movie theme is by a young CHER. Dionne had the big hit. This version by Babs is beautiful, the ending third of it is tailor made for her voice.

WOW!! I LOVE this song!!! thank you for posting it! Barbra is so incredible!!

Shubael1809 1 year ago
@Shubael1809 I prefer her voice in the recordings "What Are You Doin The Rest..." ('73), "Evergreen" ('76) and "Songbird" ('78).

@Carlski79 understood Carlski. I think we've established that she has the talent to appeal to ALL audiences (with taste!) ;-)

i had once liked her chubbiness, sexy size D appeal, charming long nose, gorgeous smile, embracing ways, and her wide long line voice.

Honestly. Was there ever a 'Purer' voice?
Streisand's voice is like butter; or honey; or silk; or anything smooth and creamy and yum.
What fu*king texture.
I can damn near taste it.

well, I wouldn't want to taste her voice on toasts but it's true, her voice sounds pure to me lol

She sings beautifully... but it's sad to know she supports abortion... that is so sad.
Opera680 3 years ago
well perhaps she simply supports a womans right to choose. I would think that's probably more the point.
tyjeffries 3 years ago 3
yes, women have the right to choose, and so do children, but they cant choose since they cant talk.... i think the point is that killing the unborn is really criminal. On the other hand, I do like Barbra's voice.
Opera680 3 years ago
WHAT does ABORTION have to do with Alfie?
gatasalvaje777 3 years ago 8
Opera680 has an ax to grind. Why don't you allow ALL people the freedom to do with their bodies as they please? A child should not be born to a woman who does not want it. Period.

The finest version of this song. I know it isn't the most famous, but the control in this version is second to none.
joeljack1 3 years ago 7
Oy, all this tawk ovah God and she is just singing a pretty sawng.
I love Babs, but this is Dionne Warwick's song. Bab's version is overstylized for my taste. I love Streisand's voice, and if she had recorded it later, she might have felt the power of the words, not just the melody.
DAVIDSILVERCA 3 years ago 2
I have to agree...Barbra is such a beautiful singer but she overdid this one. Like you said, I think she would have understood it more if she wasn't so young. Hey maybe she'll sing it again someday!
