SACD lol. Yes, higher definition than cd, able to reproduce in 24bit, but what does that matter when a player with a decent DAC costs $2000+ while less than 0.5% of recorded music is available on the format? It was an audiophile niche for a while, still is although much smaller than it was in the late 90s. Vinyl is just a more collectable medium, with just as high fidelity. What's lost in the format in dynamic range (which isn't much to begin with) is made up in musicality (i.e. jitter free).
Also, to say that any one formats is "definitive" and that nothing can improve upon it, is faulty logic. Hi-Rez DVD-A and SACD have narrowed the margin between vinyl and digital. Can anyone say that vinyl will be the only definitive format? Digital is closing the gap and will exceed vinyl in the future.
@ingodidoubt I also think it will, but I keep in mind that what we have here is analog vs digital. The digital advances are fantastic but the physical aspect of vinyl still makes the big difference to me. As a (former) crate-digger, I admit that I also love discovering a color, a shape, some matter to put my hands on, and I love used objects. And I think today teenagers getting into music go way too fast and want everything right away. The internet changed everything of course.
the problem is that every medium has its limitations. If you have a poorly mastered vinyl record, it will sound bad. If you have a properly mastered CD, it will sound better than the record. Records have many limitations. End of side distortion, warps, pops, clicks, wow and flutter, and many other anomalies. SACD is actually an excellent sound carrier that most people are not putting into the equation of digital versus analog. Vinyl lovers may want to take a closer look into the SACD.
@ingodidoubt you can fix the end of side distortion by hooking up your ground wire, fix the warps pops and clicks by selecting only clean pressings to buy and then caring for them well.and you can take care of the wow and flutter by getting a better cart/stylus and setting the weight and height adjustments properly.what other anomalies? true vinyl lovers would look at the SACD as an interesting digital sound carrier alternative when they are traveling or their turntable breaks down!
@dimebagdave77 Super Audio CD is a hi-res format that is similar to CD, but Sony and Philips who invented CD, basically went back and "re-invented the wheel".
talking about money,is completely missing the point of music.it turns it into a comodity like beans, which to a real music lover is shit.downloads are souless, and cheapen the whole feel for music ,as a collector as opposed to a dj,i want something in my hands.music is important.downloads for me are shit.
