I've always listened to this show every halloween for the past three years as a sort of unofficial tradition...managed to scare the piss out of three kids today
I'm bored with this. I listened to parts 1-3, but I'm done. Only retards thought this was real when it was happening. As I said, any fool should have known the rapid pace of events and information was completely impossible.
@underthefornix Accounts are apocryphal at best, newspapers exaggerated as they always do. Perhaps some people thought it was real at first for a couple of minutes and then had a five minute convo with their friends the next day but people weren't stupid. If you came here to listen to see if you would've believed it that's a shame, enjoy it for what it is, good stylistic sci fi.
@ChristopherDone Actually, most people DID think that this was real. This version is shortened so that you dont have to wait so long between story pieces. They had other things going on dirong this time on the radio so that it would seem real. And besides, if you we're hearing that aliens were attacking on CNN, you wouldn't be paying attention to time as much as you would on a normal basis.
@MrBootinFace Well, Wikipedia tells me the newspapers greatly exaggerated the public reaction, and you can hear for yourself in the audio that it states that this is a fictional performance of a work by H. G. Wells. Also, people aren't that stupid. Where are you getting your information from? There was widespread outrage /after/ the broadcast, for being duped. But the public response to the broadcast was confusion more than fear and belief. I highly doubt "most people DID think this was real".
@ChristopherDone They only told the audience three times throughout the broadcast that it was fake. People who tuned in to it in the middle of the broadcast wouldn't have known it was fake. Also it was back in the day when most people belived what they heard because people were much more trusting.
P.S. Dont always belive what Wikipedia says. Anyone can edit it. Therefore it won't alwasys be true.
@MrBootinFace I'm tired of this fallacy. It is a fallacy and it bugs me because I can't cite wikipedia these days without some douche commenting about the basic fundamental property of a wiki. Say what? A wiki is something that anyone can edit? Shit, since when? The 90s? OH! So that means I can't trust information on it? You're implying I'm wrong because Wiki is sometimes wrong. You're wrong. Fuck, how stupid do you think people are? As stupid as you? Damn.
@underthefornix I bet you're that guy at the party who always says something negative when people are talking, and everyone just wishes would go away.
it should have been obvious by the speed of information that this was fake. They talk to some Colonel or General who talks about the monster and then he gets cut off......15 seconds later we're told that a major battle has taken place and 7000 men lost. things just don't happen that fast, and the speed of information travel in this radio broadcast is much greater than our technology allows today.
lol my supervisor was a kid when this was going on, he tells me that you would look outside and people would be packing their things and leaving, and yes some people did commit suicide
Does this upload feature the actual timing of the original broadcast? The amount of time between the beginning of the Battle of Grover's Mill and its end was awfully short, especially since the radio announcer gave specific and confident figures of survivors. I wonder if the original broadcast was broken up into longer pauses to be more plausible.
@splatterhead062 I'm sorry for the guy who shot the water tower,but I couldn't help to laugh over it. I guess it was more difficult to get "real time"news or updates about things that might,or in this case,might not be really happening.You'd think that those people who were listening to this program on the radio,would have the sense to change channels to see if others were talking about the same thing...alien invasion.
I am following into this from 'The Shadow' programs. It's curious hos far the question of social psychology had progressed. I think, because of the degree of 'softening up' terror can produce, combined with mass broadcasting (and these same stations would have been following the unrest in Europe VERY closely), well, a lot of people, some of whom had personal ties overseas, were just ripe for a panic. It was skillfully done, and no doubt has fueled the last 60 years of UFO worship.

@slashingraven
Couldn't say, but it would certainly make a lot of sense if the pauses were originally longer.

I can see how people with only a radio for entertainment in the evenings, ready to rest from their daily routines, would sit intently listening.
