oh my fucking lord... I've been trying to find the name of this song when I heard the melody. It's ... it's tremendously beautiful. It bespeaks pain, dainty, passion, forgiveness. it's everything a musician can want.
This aria always puts me in both a sad place as well as a happy one. As for the movie I think it's a way to foreshadow things to come. The opening doesn't fit well with the aria but at the end it makes some sort of sense.
My favorite of all the versions I've heard on youtube. Her voice is so crystal clear, light, and not over the top or too nasal-ly. What I would picture as an Almirena. :)
@kyuubinokitsune13 He wouldn't give a damn. He famously held his lead soprano at her neck out of the window during the break of one of his operas, when she decided now was a good moment to re-negotiate her salary. Schubert died of Syphilis; Schumann went (and spent his life) mad. They were human, not silly images propagated by the self-declared contemporary classical elite.
@kyuubinokitsune13 And if you can't see the art in the movie that you refer to, that's just pitiful. von Trier may be a megalomaniac, but he's a brilliant one. And he, obviously, used this aria from the period of 'the best of all possible worlds' as a stark contrast to what you see, to breathtaking effect, assuming you have an open mind.
I kind of agree. She has strange timing, as though she has hardly any breath. She kind of "blurts" out the start of the line, then lets it fall away. Pretty voice, but she seems strangely untrained!
this is fucking stupid

One of my only gripes with Jacobs' version of Handel is that his rendition of "Lascia ch'io Pianga" doesn't match this one...

handel was born in the same year as bach 1685 in germany that was a good year

Handel would probably roll in his grave if he finds out that people used renditions of this in sex scenes.

Here's the rendition from the game/novel: watch?v=oeH8SCwmOsk
It doesn't compare to the aria, but it fits in the scenes where it's used IMO

Existen musicos como Händel que hacen que la vida tenga sentido y que con una melodia tan inefable, uno pueda evadirse de este mundo.

Very beautiful indeed, I'd have liked to know though who the instrumentalists are...

Beautiful voice, Maria Bayo, just made for this Händel music!
C. Bartoli is more the "Vivaldi-type"...it's a pity, but her endings are often , say "skipped away",
in my opinion... listen to "Lascia Ch'io pianga": She's overdriving aspiration... to much.
