The apprentice duals were actually on par in the original release of the game, in Japan. For some reason the CPUs have 1.5x stat level gain compared to your stats in the US version - a mistake.
I'm so in love with this game that I have indeed hunted down the original Asian edition and tried it out. The fights are straight up, not BS like in the game as we know it. Still, I prefer the challenge of our version - I grew up with it!
the reason why when you battle CPU characters in this game is that when they're at your level they have their stats to the max... let's say that when you level up the stats you get aren't always the same sometimes they're high sometimes they're low... in these cases they always get the max they could have in that level
Because if they let the computer-controlled Valsu use Elixir in fights beyond the level he learns it (42, I believe), then beating him would be very close to impossible. He could literally stall you out of MP, items, other recovery tools, and eventually HP.
In reality, these aren't really fair fights. Their stats are at least 1.5x normal. CPU Esuna hits harder than Lejes. The only really easy apprentice to beat is Lejes, his magic isn't that powerful, and he focuses on using Defense2 (which is silly, but the fact they can hit you with a move like that and you can't hit them is just as silly), and you all saw how hard Valsu just hit.
Actually, on average (at level 70 at least) an apprentice will have about 210 more points in every stat than you would if you were playing as them at the same level.
The gap closes at lower levels, of course. But due to the way their stats are calculated, they start having a significant advantage over you as early as level 20.
Much props to Kamil, I'm too much of a pussy to try fighting apprentices above level 50.
Touche. Most online guides highly suggest _against_ fighting an apprentice past level 30, and that, if at all possible, the apprentice with the Sky Rune should be hunted down like a dog once you realize it's been stolen and offed immediately. The big catch one fighting any of them is to make sure to bring BAgilities and Potion3s or Heal3s. Keep your HP topped and strike when they miss is usually how I fight them regardless of level.
How the hell is his stss at 370 and 440 when the Max stats in 7th SAga is either 255 in one version of 330 in another?
Talk about unfair.

How come Valsu didn't use Elixir?

Are you kidding me? He doesn't even know Heal 3? So much for being a healer.

It's stupid how powerful Valsu's punch was... :D
He's a healer afterall..
And why he uses HEAL2?

That would stink so badly...

How come when Valsu healed he only healed like 90 hp but Esuna could heal about 335hp??? That made a big difference in that battle still good job.
