@8MellieMaus8 Dude carries a camera around and is obsessed with fear after seeing a terrified man shove a knife into his eye. He tries to figure out what the man saw that scared him so. He is warned about Deros and discoveres an undergound mountain range village and a naked girl chained up. He takes her home to take care of her only to find she doesn't speak, eat or drink. He discovers she drinks blood after a while having her. I'll leave off there so I don't ruin it for anyone else. x3
@anneeverat1 Sadly it's one of those that could have been great if you were somewhat familiar with the background to a lot of the Japanese urban legends they reference, being the girl as well as the Deros. Plus I think some of the story is lost in translation. I broke down after watching it a couple of times and just read the Wiki on it. ^^;
the reason why American movies for the most part don't give me the chills is because you know that what you are watching on the screen is impossible to happen in reality, a true horror movie should express he extremes of real life
hehe i'm not into his style because his movies are weird and just that, nothing deep behind those weird scenes. Marebito on the other hand is profound, complex and, unlike lynch movies, it makes sense :D
@MySweetSeoul I completely disagree, Lynch is a genius. Maybe sometimes he is just weird for the sake of being weird (Inland Empire), but that is usually not the case.
Strange movie.. Great.. I've watched it, this kind of movie is so great, where you don't have any idea what will happen at the end... Hope there will be part 2,
I prefer this kind o movie so much... I hate how some american movies try to scary with "boos" and "its a ghost! argh!" or whatever mediocre way they find. All horror movies should focus on telling such great history as Marebito, not just using generic monsters and gore.
Watched last night, i liked how they put a "happy ending" in Marebito
@Rataogordo What r u talking about? Most jap horror movies are full of gore and in most cases ALL THE CHARACTERS DIE EXCEPT THE MONSTER ITSELF Which may lead us to believe that men in Japan r pussies that get killed by a bunch of girly monsters...... LOL and MOST asian movies don't have happy endings. Don't get me wrong, i love these movies especially cause the there're full of asian babes..................lol
@luisp1969 Gore can be coupled with a great story, something most mainstream American movies fail to realize. Also, you're conclusion as to why everyone in Japanese horror movies die is a little off, most of the monsters aren't "girly" (though they may be feminine), and their lead characters tend to be a little more intelligent than mainstream American movies. I hope your last statement was a joke, but sadly most people think this way about Japan...quite sad, really.
@granamonkey i didn't say the men are girly, what i meant was most of the monsters are girls. ie: the ring, the grudge, tomie etc....etc.... Like i said don't get me wrong I LOVE THESE MOVIES. And yes mostly the star of the movie and thier friends all die. I SAID MOSTLY, NOT ALWAYS.
@luisp1969 I was talking about the monsters not being girly, just feminine (being female, there is a huge difference between the two), not male leads. Male leads aren't wimps I said, where you insinuated the male leads are. I never talked about how most Japanese horror movies have all the characters die, I was referring to the bit where you stated you like these movies "especially cause they're full of asian babes".
@luisp1969 To like Japanese movies, or any movie, simply because of eye candy like "babes" is redundant in my opinion. Genuinely being drawn to certain characters is one thing, but liking a whole genre of movies "especially cause" of the "babes" belittles the movie and/or genre. That's just my opinion.
@luisp1969 Yes, watching the movie because there are attractive women in it takes away from what the movie is about, or what the director is trying to get through to the audience. If the movie is about "babes" or the director wants to get across "hey, look at this babe", then that's one thing, but I have yet to find that in any Japanese horror movie. The only place you'll find that most likely is in pornography. I'm just into movies and film, so pardon if I come off like some intellectual.
@sdblosom Yeaaah... you must be talking about the Grudge. Well yeah, actually it did have a proper plot, you just don't fucking get balls of it if you haven't seen the very first movie from the series.
I could just as easily say you don't understand the plot of "Amityville Horror" or "Chainsaw Massacre." Like modern art, if you use your imagination a little, you can invent deep meaning where there is none. All movies have a plot, even bad ones. But many have shallow plots, just an example "Cursed" or "Infection" and rely mostly on scares and gore. How is this different from Hollywood? Both turn out great films and have their fair share of shallow/ambiguous films.
@sdblosom I said proper plot, actually. I haven't said they didn't actually have a plot, because OF COURSE every movie has a plot. Every movie has a story to tell, but hey, Hollywood's just bad at making up good stories for horrors in general, so they turn to "OH MY GOD SOMETHING SUDDENLY POPPED OUT AND I'M JUST HERE HIDING"-kind of stuff, something which is done WAY less in Asian horror. I haven't seen Cursed, only heard it was bad. As for Infection, there isn't really much gore in it imo.
Any my argument is that your pretentious "proper plot" is actually a shallow plot made deeper by your imagination. Infection has gore as its main plot and Japanese horror movies are just as guilty of using the loud sound/jump image tactic. You either have to stop watching only Japanese films and assuming they are the end all be all, or you need to expand your American horror films. You can't just base all American horror on the movies in the weekly top ten.
@sdblosom I have seen American horror films. Jump images, in Infection? It's been long since I've seen that movie but as far as I remember, the only movie in which I've ever seen such things were in Coming Soon. And it's plot isn't pure about gore. Of course America does now and then succeed in making a good horror, usually the ones that don't get very popular for some reason, but in general they aren't very good at it. Hollywood just fails to amuse me with it's horror.
Are you kidding? The latest craze for Japanese films have all been CGI ghosts (look at the trailer for Shimizu's other film, Shock Labyrinth). Many of the US horror films to come out lately are remakes of those. I like all horror Japanese, US, or otherwise. But you gota admit Japan is just as guilty when it comes to cheap scares as the US is lately. I do agree with you however, that gore and special effects are not horror.
@Rataogordo You're spot on mate. Americans are just too focused on reducing the audience to mere reflexive creatures so that they can sell movies that does nothing more than one's ability to be shocked by 'boos' and 'bangs'. Why strain the brain when you can just 'boo' money out of them right. It seems to be working though, give the popularity of 'slasher' movies, and well, just about most american movies of today, of all genres.
Although the elements are there ; ). i took her as a different kind of creature, something not yet named. Vampires are these seemingly hyper evolved tip top of the food chain type of entities, the "vampire" in this is infantile,
I love japanese horror and I love Takashi Shimizu! Americans remakes and stupid zombies movies sucks...
