It is always sad when innocent people die. The cost of freedom from tyranny has always been at a great expense. We could argue about sane gun laws, but ultimately these laws become outright bans which defeat the possibility of freedom from tyranny. One could argue that we have a stable government and no longer need a second amendment but this assumes that our government will always be stable.

There is overwhelming evidence with mountains of statistics and books proving guns do prevent home invasions and are a reasonable means of self-defense. Anyone individual (Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty) disagreeing with these proofs are either illiterate or have an ulterior motive of disarming American citizens! Guns don’t kill people, criminals do! The Republican dominated SCOTUS continues to WRONGFULLY interpret the Second Amendment. I support gun ownership but I DO NOT support the sloppy and incorrect interpretation of the Second Amendment by the NRA and the gun lobby. The Founders wrote the Second Amendment to support WELL REGULATED MILITIAS. That is what the Second Amendment says and that is what it means. Anything other interpretation shows the Founders to be sloppy and unintelligent and ill considered men.

The fact is that the Founders were careful, literate men and even though Jefferson and even others supported YOUR view, their and your version did NOT prevail. The wording in the Second Amendment is specific for a specific reason and like it says to protect the rights of well regulated militias to keep and bear arms. Why do they have to be licensed to have fully automatic high caliber weapons?

@Verator And the Founders view which is undoubtedly different from yours had the goal of protecting communities from all enemies, foreign and domestic. A well regulated militia, constituted from the community, with stated public goals, a command structure, an armory that had regular drills for training and supporting the stated goals would have been a powerful force for supporting the Constitution and maintaining peace.

Comparing the 2nd to the fire in a theater is pretty easy. Shooting people is illegal as it injuries other citizens. Just like shouting fire in a crowded theater is illegal as it puts others in imminent harm.
