I am dual booting Ubuntu 9.10 and Win 7. I would totally switch over to Linux IF it runs Adobe Master Suite. So, you're telling me with VM or Virtual box, you have to install Premiere everytime you "boot" into Windows? Do you have any experience with it running it under Wine?
please more I would like seeing more on running adobe premiere and or after effects using virtualbox..! then I would move in a second from this sh..t of windows to LINUX !!!
Wasn't anyharder to find for me than it was figuring windows for the first time. I just wish it wasn't a hobby to make games work on WINE. If that happened the landscape would be quite different.
MY ONLY COMPLAIN ABOUT UBUNTU AND SIMILAR IS SUPPORT FOR MY VIDEO CARD. ITS A NIGHTMARE TO INSTALL A GRAPHICS CARD FROM ATI AND WORSE IF ITS NVIDIA. And watch dvds or read mp3 files. For the rest i like it.
it is easy once you know how to do it.. for instance i use arch linux.. to install a nvidia card you type "Pacman -S nvidia" and boom your done... MUCH simpler than windows.
Er, all I did was select "Install Restricted Drivers" when Ubuntu notified me that there were drivers available for me when I booted into Ubuntu. And then it was installed. :P Shouldn't that work for most cards? XD
Sausagenmuff! Awesome! I have one question... How well does Premiere run in VMWare/Virtual Box. What limitations have you run into (i.e. capture/rendering/etc.)?
But I wanted to thank you to show me, that I could use Premiere when I decide to take Linux as my first OS, which i didnt do yet, cause i need Premiere!
very cool. You can run Windows under Linux and Linux under Windows. You can't run a simple and very popular kids game like Toontown under Linux any which way, using VMware, Virtualbox or anything else.
I am with you man, trust me. I want to run Premiere or FCP. What I don't want to run is Windows. Yet what you show is that you can fiddle with two operating systems. I have done five at a time. It's called proof of concept.
Please help. I need to be able to do exactly what you have done. I'm new to Ubuntu and linux. I need to get virtual box working to where it will run xp and therefore let me use Adobe Premiere and After Effects.
I've installed Ubuntu today and I'm watching videos on youtube about it and i have to try this cose I use Adobe Premiere a lot. Video's great, just have to see how it will be on my computer :D
Hello..im mecanic ing. so i was wondering if i can use AUTOCAD on virtual box with xp??? and some other simulators...if it can..OMG..i just change linux now!
I would like to know how do you managed to run XP in this way under Linux. I have Ubuntu and I can run Windows in a Box, but not integrated in the Linux-Desktop...how did you made this, appears to be a miracle!
Not a surprise. Well, being serious, what is your PC configuration? At least 2 Gb RAM, dude? (I've got just 768 mb RAM, so it looks not possible on my current piece of shit)
sorry for my english (I'm drunk and clock is around 5 am)
ubuntu with all the eye-candy and compiz "cube" turned on.. only uses about 500 MB of ram, with a bunch of programs open i have never gone over 850MB.. :)
when running 2 OS's you need Ram for both, 500 for LIN, 500 for WIN.. so about a 1GB.
when im running 2 OS's and have lots of programs open in each I have gone as high as 1.8GB ram usage. but I do not believe in swap files in EITHER OS.
Hey, when you run XP, and like Premiere, does Premiere have access to all of the power available? Because I heard that you lose performance when you run OS's within another. If the rendering and stuff can be full blown in this setup then I totally will use this setup for my next computer.
The video is amazing. Im actually running XP/Ubuntu dual boot at the moment and must say that Ubuntu is developing at light speed in a very positive direction. If Microsoft makes another dead OS like Vista they are screwed :)
Thank you very much. Phenomenal video, by the way. I can't believe what I'm seeing! A friend of mine has turned me on to Ubuntu and I will have to give it a shot!
the only issues i've EVER found on linux based systems are wlan drivers... which admittedly can be hard to find.
Now-a-days you can use windows drivers, with a NSIS wrapper on linux systems.. which sounds hard, but is really not that tough if you know your way around a PC. chEErs!
Adobe is asking comunity whether demand for CS on linux exist, tell them clear YES.
Thumbsup!

Would anyone know the solution to a lack of screen resolutions under windows 7?
My desktop comes out either too large that I have to scroll or too small that it's ridiculous

it must be nice having a million gigs of ram and a $1,000.00 USD processor along with a 9 million dollar vid. processor.
this is *not* everyday computing with ubuntu, folks. your gateway 3000 will not do this out of the box.
OP is obvious shill is shill. welcome to the internet.

no it will not work in wine, older versions are do able in vmware / virtualbox though.
also stick with xp, win7 is useless..

You could get the drivers for ubuntu from Nvidia.
Or just add restricted-ubuntu-extra in the installer. Then you can install nvidia drivers that are fully tested with ubuntu.
But be warned that it's illegal in many countries. Since it uses some codecs that are patented...
I personally use Mandriva Free and added the PLF repositories... And it installs without any problems..

IF you use it every day, it's not proof of concept, it's just computing.
proof of concept would be if u do something, but never use it.

which compiz option did you use to get the background go transparent to show the windows of the other desktops?
I've tried a lot of "transparency" options in compiz, but none got it to look like that :(
allnicknamesaretaken 4 years ago
turn both transparancy sliders down to about 22% in the cube options.
then in GENERAL options make sure to turn OFF lighting.
that should do it :)

its' called "seamless mode" and comes intigrated into Virtualbox, when you use the guest additions CD.
though it doesn't seem to work for everyone. just like a lot of things, the Bleeding Edge is quite often buggy.

almost no performance loss, I did a 1MB run of SUPERPI, and it came in almost identical:
windows 15 seconds
Linux 16 seconds
VRBOX 16 seconds
BUT, virtual box is NOT mutlti-threaded at the moment, meaning I have 4cores and the guest OS only has access to one.
VMware Does use more than one core (only 2 i belive) but vmware is so slow (up to 20 seconds) vbox is still much faster even on one core.
-good question.
