I just saw the Band of Joy at Speedway Meadows in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. I taped "Ramble On" from the hill where the acoustics were pretty good. Check it out!
Made th first and last concert at MSG. To bad on the first night some jerk throw down a fire cracker that hurt Jimmy Pages hand. He was able to finish the concert which Robert Plant called the jerk a ( phsyical Graffi ).
@ncast54 I was at that show, 6/7/77, opening night, what a fuckin show! i was 16 n had a first date with a hot chick, we got to our nosebleed seats n i said lets sneak down, she said no n i said SEE YA! i got all the way down right in front of jimmy, it blew my young mind! the best show i ever saw, and i was there a month later to see pink floyd, that girl never talked to me again, who cares, theres many chicks but only one LED ZEPPELIN, ROCK ON!!!
You got that right chicks come and go but Led ZEP still remains the same, one of the greatest Rock Bands of all times. If they all come together for a renioun tour with John Bohman son on drums, I'll meet you there.
i was at this gig we had real good seats orange seats at the side of the stage madison square garden they cost $12.50 it was a high school graduation present to myself june 17 1977 and I was high
Why everybody complains about how they sounded back then is a mystery to me. It's not like today when you go to a concert and it sounds like your listening to the record/cd. They didn't have the technology to reproduce the sound as good and personally I think thats what gives a show a better feel when it is a little different then the record/cd
@tpaskell yeah my brother always tells me live music sucks, but I like it because it sounds different than the record.. I mean, who wants to listen to the same studio recording over and over and over and over and over for the next eternity?
Watching Jimmy dance was half the show for me. He played those songs with his while body. Total unabashed, unscripted joy! Let the music be your master!
Thanks for this video. This is almost exactly the way they looked from where I was sitting: Chicago Stadium '77. Takes me back. Except for one thing: it was so LOUD as to be physically painful. I couldn't even distinguish the songs.

Wow I was at this concert. I had hash in a pipe and had it taken away from me by security, but they let me into the concert. What a flash back. Thanks!
@Paneeks 1960 You're right! I knew that too! Don't know why I said 7. Anyway, even tho I was a little let down it was the best concert I ever saw. They opened with The Song Remains the Same, my all time favorite, and after very long drum solo and longer No Quarter they did Kashmir which to me saved the night. I am sooo glad I had the chance to see them. Led Zeppelin is the opitome of what a rock and roll band should be!
@MegaZephead I was up in the cheap seats. Joints kept coming by, just passed and smoked one after another. Total strangers used to share their stuff with all of MSG. I rermember seeing Jimmy most cuz he was in white, and all over the stage that night.. And Robert was pushing his voice. Everyone was high and happy. And nobody wanted to leave when it was over. It was absolute joy..
Life was so much simpler back then and these concerts were such a BIG deal. I remember how badly I wanted tickets and wasn't able to get them. It was all over the radio and they were sold out in minutes.
saw them 1973 and they were terrible. a mess. 1980 i was their personal driver (mostly jimmy page und john-paul, who was a nice bloke) on a part of their european tour. they had to break up a gig in nuremberg after three songs. john bonham just collapsed on his drum chair & was driven to the hospital. the day after i saw him drinking booze in a disco. three moths later or so he was dead.
@TheAluxx Where did you see them perform in 1973? I have heard 85% of the 73 shows and witnessed 4 of them on that tour. I only remember a few shows that were not up to par on that tour such as Boston for one. It was mainly due to the crazy crowds and no crowd control really. But the band always performed to their best at every show. They did not start to have bad nights until the 1975 tour. I would love to hear what show they sucked at?
@Conan568 Me too, saw em at MSG, maybe this show... who knows, bought a ticket from a scalper out on the street right in front of the Garden... great show, had a floor seat. Incredible, really!
It blows my mind that there are people who have actually typed comments about how bad Zep was in 77 WHILE THIS DEVASTATING PERFORMANCE WAS PLAYING ON THEIR COMPUTER!!!! It goes to show how some people just believe everything they read and have their minds made up already (people who actually saw them on a bad night in 77 excepted of course). Anyway, it's about time to roll back some of the slander about the 77 tour. There were bad nights, yes...but the good ones were the best ever.

jimmy played a 30s version of black mountainside, lauched into kashmir while the band had to rush on stage while bonzo covered as he was already there.
you could tell they didnt care as bonzo left his drumset early in STH and they didnt play a single encore.
77 had great nights but the worst shows were generally on this tour.
@Matthew9444 Yeah, I did think about what I wrote. I usually do. And my point was that a lot of people (you being one of them I guess) like to point to the bad nights in '77 and overlook the many nights they were great on that tour. I mean, do you think Tempe was the norm in '77? Why didn't you just pick the night in Chicago Jimmy was sick? I'd rather focus on the great shows that year, and there were a lot more of them than the bad ones. Like JImmy said, it was a long tour.

@mielazul i hear there were 2 other shows in 77 recorded but were never stolen, maybe 1 day...
yes 77 had some great nights, LA forum shows were some of the best ever but compared to other tours it was the worst although that didn't make it a bad tour.
I wish they had recorded a night in 1980, that is my favourite tour at the moment
@Matthew9444 Interesting that you say that about the '80 tour, because I really like it too. My impression of it was that Jimmy was amazing on the down and dirty stuff (Train, Nobody's Fault, etc.) but on the really subtle nuanced stuff like White Summer, Since I've Been Lovin You, he kind of faltered. It's weird on a show like Frankfurt to hear him deliver such an awesome version of the very demanding Achilles, but fuck up other stuff. Anyway, '77 is still my fav, but thanks for being cool!
@Matthew9444 And as far as the stolen stuff...I do believe that some recordings of various concerts were stolen...but do you ever get the feeling that Jimmy is actually behind some of these bootleg releases? Kind of an end run around Rob's inevitable veto? Sometimes I wonder.
Holy shit! I was at this concert! Was my first concert...was so loud, was so high. Still remember it like it was yesterday...kinda. Need the time machine.
Holy shit! I was at this concert! Was my first concert...was so loud, was so high. Still remember it like it was yesterday...kinda. Need the time machine.
do you know whats great about zep? they didnt have to sound super distorted to sound awesome. the only time they had a "crunch" was (rah, htwww, and knebworth) and of course on albums. which i guess gives some hope to little jimmy page fans that want to get his live tone. true it is in his fingers, but his tone is mostly "clean".
I was @ one of the 77 NYC shows. In high School. They had peaked back in 75 but they were still a wonder to see. I was one of the lucky ones too see them. Now 48 looking back, it was a thrill.
I hate to burst anyones bubble I saw them in may 1977 At the cap centre in largo md.I got my tickets 4 month's in advance..And you know what? They sucked 2 hours late jimmy page was tore up on I don't what.John bonhm did a 45 minute drum solo Which became nerve wracking after about 20 minutes..and when they played whole lotta loveAnd as soon as they got to the kick ass guitar solo they stopped.and went into rock&roll. The acoustic set was great tho. They really let me down
@stiggs61 Unfortunately, Led Zeppelin's 1977 tour is probably their worst, with a few exceptions (the LA shows, Cleveland, etc) but at least you had the great opportunity to see them live, something i will NEVER see :/
@stiggs61 funny you'd say that....notice hear how they tease w/ the riff from the rover and then go into Sick Again? I was at NYC 6/11/77 and wonder if it's so much what you site stiggs61 or if it was that they couldn't possibly live up to our expectations?
At least I wasn't bullied by Cap Centre a-holes wearing shirts that read "crowd control" (as I was during my college years at GWU).
@stiggs61 I feel your pain man! I saw them in NYC 1977. They played ok, not nearly as lively as some of these video's I'm seeing.Their set list wasn't great and that drum solo!! Way to long! And boring!! Even the guitar solo was too long. I saw them the last night of 7 at MSG so maybe that had something to do with it. Gotta say I'm still glad I saw them tho.
@weaslethorp They only played six nights at Madison Square Garden in 1977, not seven. But, I guess I am happy that you saw them even though you did not dig it!
riotlnthunderalley- If you were born in 1950 you would now be 60 yrs old and near the end of your days.So I would say instead be thankful that u r young. And be thankful for you tube.B4 youtube only people with very serious collections had access to more than 1 version of a song. Now anyone with a computer can access awsome footage like this.
should have been called the Jimmy Page show. spotlight on him the whole song. LOL. All 4 just great, great musicians. There will never be another rock band to make music even close to Led Zeppelin. Simply the best of all time.
I started playing guitar because of them. I just recorded my first demo album. If you want to hear how Led Zeppelin-inspired music sounds 2010 style click on wisztrock.
@slavejoe99 Hey joe you might have been there but it certainly wasnt on 6/16/77 .Zeppelin played the Garden 6/7-8, 6/10-11and 6/13-14 in 1977 for a total of 6 shows and the only way to get tkts was through mail order ...still have my tkt stubs
One of the best Zep live shows out there....look at how on they are here...they were legendary partiers...hence the poor quality of some of the later stuff..but nonetheless...best music that was ever called Rock and Roll...no doubt..the progenitors of heavy metal and hair metal..and rock blues....
@LostHighwayRambler I was there too ! The first major concert of my teenage life, and trippin' on THC ! ...wow, what a night it was...we were all flying ! When we got off the subway when we got back to Queens, we wound up all laying on the sidewalk in a spontaneous circle with our heads touching in the middle and gazing at the stars in the clear night sky..AWESOME, I still get goosebumps !
this band and their music keeps on blowing my mind! forty years since i first heard good times bad times on am radio and it all keeps growing and getting better! damn, lets all get together and make our own bands and music in celebration to this epoch band as long as it's from the heart nothing else matters! we need to all celebrate together in this kind of arena. . . .who will carry the torch?
@imdagr8st even better than that there's plenty of audience and soundboard recordings out there much better than a cleaned up commercial recording especially listening to the audience members react to the music and robert's bantering! peace friend!
@RiotInThunderAlley Hate to break it to you, but I was born in 1951. Perfect year to catch on to the acid rock era and the early Zeppelin stuff. Problem was, I was born in South Africa, where many rock band's records were either banned our hard to find.
Saw zep in MPLS april 12th 1977 ... started show with this tune' Jimmy was all over the stage and I was floored as a 12 year old kid' just getting into Rock ...ya' i became a guitarist... p.s. start of show was delayed-waited for an hour until Jimmy got his Meds' ...IS the same time Guitar Player journalist was with Zep' he insulted Jonsey on the Plane flight back to chicago and left'm until another time weeks later after apologies etc...
wonder about Jimmy Page experience with the occult as I understand he owned ab occult shop in England before starting up with the band. Dylan says he doesn't know who wrote many of the brilliant the songs he penned - where does it come from - how can we get 'it' to come back again? - The world needs an Infusion .
I was 7 so I was not there, wish I was. Can't beat Zeppelin live!!! Even though the quality of this footage is not the greatest you can tell the performance was great! Page's solo on Sick again was awesome!!
No it's not from Listen To This Eddie. That bootleg has much better sound and Bonzo played one of the most intense intros you'll ever hear. This, I think, is the same version that's on the Led Zeppelin DVD set. It's buried in one of the menus.
You seem like a serious fan, why would one be considered an idiot to rate the 77 tour below the others when the band themselves didn't care to include any footage in the recent double dvd?
zeppelin DID want to put 1977 out there to the public. Jimmy Page wanted to make a LIVE album when they were gonna do the 77 tour, but that didnt work out and so years later during the making of the led zepppelin dvd, Jimmy page searched for multitrack recordings of any 77 shows and in particular the seattle show, but he found none. he was always controlling and wanted everything remastered soo much. look what he did with earls court and TSRTS.
I respect your dedication and knowledge. I attended MSG Sat 6/11/77 and found Jimmy much more impressive in the 90s. I understand that many younger fans would envy me, but many of those later reconstructions were better performances. Just my opinion...I was there.
I think this is from the 6/8/77 show at the Garden. I too was not at this show but at the June 13, 1977 show. It didn't matter really because they were f-n killer each and every night that they played the Garden during the week that Led Zeppelin INVADED New York. Everywhere you went in the city {especially the village music shops} were buzzed with Zeppelin mania and you could easily bump into friends who had tickets for at least one of the six nights. Man, those were the days..
Paneeks, on Sat June 11 (the only time heartbreaker was played as an encore in NYC) it was unseasonably cold! Do you remember? Every time I go to a Rangers game I walk by sec 303. Sure they were crappy seats but when the Phla show was cancelled after Karac's death I was glad I made it to that NY show.
Very good point Jeff. I do remember the weather a bit but not as good as you do. You have a great memory to remember just how cold it was outside the Garden in 1977. Do you remember all the bootleg jerseys and photos that people were selling all around the garden? Man, I must have bought about 4 jerseys and also I got a few buttons and a program. Every time I go to MSG I try to envision the Zeppelin shows also. Good to talk to someone who was actually there. Thanks for writing back. Rob/Boston
Great footage! I too wa @ the 6?10?77 show @ MSG but sadly this video isn't of this show. Plant was wearing an off white outfit along with Jimmy and JP. Bonzo wore a t shirt.
I saw them during that tour at the Greensborough coliseum in North Carolina the date I believe was 4th May 1977 - I remember Plant saying to the crowd that it "was bonzos birthday ". Can the chap who posted about the same gig in north Carolina confirm that statement from plant ? Anyway the show was awesome !! Page was extremely great that night - Remember him being all over the stage - He also did an extended guitar solo including the star spangled banner !! My ears also rang for three days !
Wow, I never believed footage of that historic LedZep tour of 1977 existed ! I was fortunate and very darn lucky to see them in concert on the show they did May 4th 1977 at the greensborough coliseum in North Carolina.
They blew me away - I have not recovered yet - I just hope that they do a DVD of that tour.
Who ever got this footage has captured rock history at its very best. It brought back many great memories for me.
I was in the 10th row center stage, and from the opening cord of The Song Remains the Same; everyone stood up and ran to the stage. I heard the music at 120db but never saw the band that night. Two days later I bought better seats off to the side and watched the greatest show ever.
Hey below....I was @ the June 8, 1977, MSG show...saw you on another Zeppelin tune/youtube. It was my birthday and what an amazing frigin night....they played 3 rocking hours. You don't get that anymore and the best seats (I got) were $10.50! Luckiest day when I got the tickets in the mail...thanks for posting this memory. Page, Plant, Bonham and Jones live @ 120 decibels! Have all their albums and they are still perfect. My son is a rocker now~
I was @ the June 8th, 1977 concert here. @ Madison Square Garden..It was my birthday!! The best concert ever and the best birthday.....best seats cost only $10.50 back then. I have a tattered t-shirt I have saved all these years....best rock and roll band ever!!!
Thanks for filming this....saviing this one... have every vinyl record they made all in perfect condition~
I was at the June 10th concert at MSG and they were just absolutely amazing! I still to this day think it was the best concert I have ever seen. This video just brings back such great memories for me - thanks so much for posting it!! :-)
Cutting riffs, super strong melodies....The BEST I've ever seen....Page best ever (but i did see Randy Rhodes 2 months before he died...close call) LOVE ZEP!
I would never go as far as to say anyone was even little g god, however it should be clear to all that Page is an ABSOLUTE GENIUS. In my humble opinion the best all around musician/guitar player/recording artist/performer of our time. He comes at you from every direction you can imagine and many of which only he could imagine. He seems to be able to connect with everyone.
I completely agree with you, as where Hendrix was also very talented he was a sort of 1 trick pony as in all his music sounds alike as where page incorporated different styles of music and litterally forged metal, before Led Zeppelin there was nothing heavy like that and its ridiculous how Jimmy Page just doesn't get the recognition he deserves for being the greatest guitarist of all time, as a matter of fact if it wasn't for Jimmy Page I would have never picked up a guitar myself
Hendrix based his career on his knowledge of pentatonic or 'blues' scale from playing the chitlin circuit,Page incorporated, mixolydian, ionian, and pentatonic,as well as Indian modes (scales) which he picked up from his years as a studio hack,I gotta say Page had a wider set of influences ,but Jimi was making lyrical leaps as well,ie. the Dylanesque MyFriend from CryOfLove shows he was becoming an adept wordsmith as well. Both great producers, so I gotta say Page by a length,
What a show it was! I got to see 3 of the 6 shows that week, 6/8, 6/9 and 6/11 which was sweet seeing all 6 where sold out. Me and a buddy of mine try to sneak into the Plaza Hotel where they where staying, with no luck.
I saw them @ the "Second of six" show (according to Plants welcome after this song) @ this venue , I was 15 & my sister bought the ticket 4 me , I paid her back the $12.50 , but I still feel that I owe her 4 this one !
I hate everyone of those that were on this concert! why was I born in the 90's?!-.-

I was at the 6/7 show on the floor with my buddy Pano Anastasado from Saint Andrews School in Boca Raton, Florida.
I was 15. My Dad flew me to NYC that summer to see this show.
I was so young (and stupid) that some guy on the floor sold me oregano and by the time I realized it, he was obviously gone.
If I had only known then that I was witnessing the downfall of one of the greatest Rock and Roll bands of the 20th century.
I will NEVER forget this show.

@Matthew9444 And as far as the stolen stuff...I do believe that some recordings of various concerts were stolen...but do you ever get the feeling that Jimmy is actually behind some of these bootleg releases? Kind of an end run around Rob's inevitable veto? Sometimes I wonder.

do you know whats great about zep? they didnt have to sound super distorted to sound awesome. the only time they had a "crunch" was (rah, htwww, and knebworth) and of course on albums. which i guess gives some hope to little jimmy page fans that want to get his live tone. true it is in his fingers, but his tone is mostly "clean".
Cheers

They really let me down
stiggs61 1 year ago
@stiggs61 Unfortunately, Led Zeppelin's 1977 tour is probably their worst, with a few exceptions (the LA shows, Cleveland, etc) but at least you had the great opportunity to see them live, something i will NEVER see :/
prooflootkoo 1 year ago
@prooflootkoo Thank you! Yeah' i know some people that seen them at LA forum 77
The guy said it was horrible..What was missing, was jimmy pages fucked quality that was in the shows, Of course he was too fucked up to deliver it..
dannyhood66 1 year ago
@stiggs61 funny you'd say that....notice hear how they tease w/ the riff from the rover and then go into Sick Again? I was at NYC 6/11/77 and wonder if it's so much what you site stiggs61 or if it was that they couldn't possibly live up to our expectations?
At least I wasn't bullied by Cap Centre a-holes wearing shirts that read "crowd control" (as I was during my college years at GWU).
ih8tbush 1 year ago
@stiggs61 I feel your pain man! I saw them in NYC 1977. They played ok, not nearly as lively as some of these video's I'm seeing.Their set list wasn't great and that drum solo!! Way to long! And boring!! Even the guitar solo was too long. I saw them the last night of 7 at MSG so maybe that had something to do with it. Gotta say I'm still glad I saw them tho.
weaslethorp 1 year ago

One of the best Zep live shows out there....look at how on they are here...they were legendary partiers...hence the poor quality of some of the later stuff..but nonetheless...best music that was ever called Rock and Roll...no doubt..the progenitors of heavy metal and hair metal..and rock blues....

wonder about Jimmy Page experience with the occult as I understand he owned ab occult shop in England before starting up with the band. Dylan says he doesn't know who wrote many of the brilliant the songs he penned - where does it come from - how can we get 'it' to come back again? - The world needs an Infusion .

No it's not from Listen To This Eddie. That bootleg has much better sound and Bonzo played one of the most intense intros you'll ever hear. This, I think, is the same version that's on the Led Zeppelin DVD set. It's buried in one of the menus.

You seem like a serious fan, why would one be considered an idiot to rate the 77 tour below the others when the band themselves didn't care to include any footage in the recent double dvd?
ih8tbush 2 years ago
I am one of the biggest fans of zeppelin;)
zeppelin DID want to put 1977 out there to the public.
AirJGFoLife69 2 years ago

Jeff/Phila (then) NY (now)
ih8tbush 2 years ago
Very good point Jeff. I do remember the weather a bit but not as good as you do. You have a great memory to remember just how cold it was outside the Garden in 1977. Do you remember all the bootleg jerseys and photos that people were selling all around the garden? Man, I must have bought about 4 jerseys and also I got a few buttons and a program. Every time I go to MSG I try to envision the Zeppelin shows also. Good to talk to someone who was actually there. Thanks for writing back. Rob/Boston

TheMoodyBluez 2 years ago
Wow, I never believed footage of that historic LedZep tour of 1977 existed ! I was fortunate and very darn lucky to see them in concert on the show they did May 4th 1977 at the greensborough coliseum in North Carolina.
They blew me away - I have not recovered yet - I just hope that they do a DVD of that tour.
Who ever got this footage has captured rock history at its very best. It brought back many great memories for me.
Thanks for the flashback !

I was in the 10th row center stage, and from the opening cord of The Song Remains the Same; everyone stood up and ran to the stage. I heard the music at 120db but never saw the band that night. Two days later I bought better seats off to the side and watched the greatest show ever.

He seems to be able to connect with everyone.
jvmalum 2 years ago
I completely agree with you, as where Hendrix was also very talented he was a sort of 1 trick pony as in all his music sounds alike as where page incorporated different styles of music and litterally forged metal, before Led Zeppelin there was nothing heavy like that and its ridiculous how Jimmy Page just doesn't get the recognition he deserves for being the greatest guitarist of all time, as a matter of fact if it wasn't for Jimmy Page I would have never picked up a guitar myself
GQRockstarboy 2 years ago
Hendrix based his career on his knowledge of pentatonic or 'blues' scale from playing the chitlin circuit,Page incorporated, mixolydian, ionian, and pentatonic,as well as Indian modes (scales) which he picked up from his years as a studio hack,I gotta say Page had a wider set of influences ,but Jimi was making lyrical leaps as well,ie. the Dylanesque MyFriend from CryOfLove shows he was becoming an adept wordsmith as well. Both great producers, so I gotta say Page by a length,
