Fonteyn was the most famous ballerina in the west because Russia was closed off to the rest of the world. Only Russians got to see russian ballet during the 40s-50s for the most part. They did tour some, but if russian dancers wanted to remain with another company, they had to flee their country. Look at the politics, in the 40s, Russia and Cuba were communist, Italy was Fascist, France was practically rebuilding itself from the ground up...of course Fonteyn was the chosen one.
@Jeenn15 I think Russian ballet needs the strongest discipline and technique. You can't just say it's shit, cause it's fantastic. By the way, Russia is the leading ballet country with the Vaganova technique. So they are definitely not shit. The Russians work their buts off for ballet too, so you can at least be a little nicer.
They take my breath away. The girl in the green unitard especially. It's hard to believe actual flesh and blood human beings can achieve that technical level

no technique? but i guess thats russian for you... i will admit they get their legs up and turned out like crazy, but if all the in-between steps are without concentration and breathe, then theres no need to dance, my attention isnt being held on their quality, just their quantity of flexablilty...
but thats y i hate gymnastics ballet compared to classical ballet
OJTS007 is another Cecchetti/RAD progenitor criticizing the future of classical ballet. Too bad s/he doesn't realize those non-methodologies are becoming as dead to classical ballet as Latin and Sanskrit are to language.
I think that you have failed to realize, dear flipdick, that classical ballet is called "classical" ballet for a reason: because its classic! clean technique isnt a thing of the past, its something to be improved over the years not forgotten. the point of ballet is to express yourself and tell a story through personal expression, and perfect movement.... technique is what puts the pieces together and without it, you cant call it ballet. thats wat sets the artists apart from the idiots.
Are you serious? Russian ballet is know for it's technique! The Kirov is famous for being military like which is why it's one of the best ballet companies in the world.
I can say it quit easily. They are such amazing dancers because their training is so "military like" and intense. They practice hours on end every day from the time they're like, 10 and don't take any shit, that's why they're so renowned. But I see there's not point wasting my time on you, seeing how you're one of those people who doesn't actually enjoy the art of ballet, only starting arguments with everyone.
like.... ummmm.... like omg! they're like... ummmm? then dont waste ur time, and FYI im pretty damn sure i know a lot about the art of ballet! thats y im making this argument!!!??? like....
Aaaaahahahahahaa...you're funny because you think I care what your thoughts are. You're pathetic. Are you seriously trying to insult me with your cute little comment? You're a disgusting excuse for a person and an insult to ballet. I refuse to waste any more of my time on you. I have already wasted too much as it is. Have fun in your little world.
totallymime, you cant say russian technique is the strongest just because you have had most of your training with that technique...the balanchine method and the french ballet style are just as demanding...you should make yourself more rounded as a dancer by studying these techniques then maybe you have room to talk.
i know that last excerscise, well i cant do it but i know it from this other kirov documentery called back stage at the kirov, its so awesome and so worth watching, it made me cry,
There is a tradition in Russian training that everything done at the barre is done in the center, from the first year of training. It improves balance, strength, and increases concentration and stage presence. Try many of the exercises in the center on demi-pointe or pointe.
I love how they do that. We've done entire classes in the center before, and it's certainly a challenge.
The only thing is, they were all dancing with lots of clothes on - I don't think I could do that! I like plain leotard and tights so I can really see everything. And that way, you feel like more of a ballerina, too!
They make it look like death.

I disagree: I have trained in the Vaganova method as well as Cecchetti and Balanchine, and find the Russian style much more strong.
