This is an interesting question especially during a recession. You said what we do defines who we are. Most of us 'do' employment which is linked to providing basic needs such as food and shelter. When a person lacks these basic needs then it is their LACK of WORK which defines who they are, so to a certain extent, work (employment) does define who we are.
